Acrodermatitis continua of Hallopeau is a rare form of pustular psoriasis affecting the acral fingers and toes, characterized by recurrent eruptions of sterile pustules that lead to significant pain and potentially irreversible destruction of the nail apparatus. Symptoms are often refractory to topical and systemic therapies for psoriasis. This case report presents a healthy 23-year-old female with severe acrodermatitis continua of Hallopeau, destructing all 10 fingernails.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFUnderstanding the tumor microenvironment, particularly the vascular density and the availability of oxygen, is key in individualizing treatment approaches and determining their efficacy. While there are many therapies including radiotherapy that are ineffective in hypoxic tumor microenvironments, here we demonstrate the heterogeneous oxygen consumption during photodynamic therapy (PDT), a non-invasive treatment method using localized light to activate a photosensitive drug in the presence of oxygen that has shown high effectiveness in the treatment of various types of tumors, including those presented in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients. While our previous work has demonstrated that blood oxygen saturation (StO) mapped before and after treatment with ultrasound-guided photoacoustic imaging (US-PAI) can be used as a surrogate marker for the regionalized long-term efficacy of PDT, real-time monitoring of StO during PDT could provide additional insights on oxygen consumption and inform dose design for "on the spot" treatment decisions.

Evidence-informed trauma interventions developed specifically and Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) that address racial, historical, and intergenerational trauma are sparse, particularly for youth. To meet this need, the current study developed and piloted a new intervention - (TRANSFORM) - using a and community-engaged research-to-practice approach. Across two phases, we documented the community-participatory development of TRANSFORM and analyzed preliminarily quantitative data collected in a pilot study with = 19 BIPOC youth.

LRMP prevents cAMP-dependent potentiation of HCN4, but the interaction domains, mechanisms of action, and basis for isoform-specificity remain unknown. Here, we identify the domains of LRMP essential for this regulation, show that LRMP acts by disrupting the intramolecular signal transduction between cyclic nucleotide binding and gating, and demonstrate that multiple unique regions in HCN4 are required for LRMP isoform-specificity.

The quantification and monitoring of such key hormones are crucial for the early identification of infertility, but also in improving therapeutic management associated with hormonal imbalance. In this review, we extensively summarize and discuss: i) drawbacks of laboratory methods for fertility testing (costly, invasive, complex) and commercially available point-of-care tests (measuring only one/two of the four key hormones), ii) the understanding of different biosensors for fertility monitoring, and iii) an in-depth classification and overview of aptamer-based sensing of the hormones of interest.

Using computer simulation we investigated whether machine learning (ML) analysis of selected ICU monitoring data can quantify pulmonary gas exchange in multi-compartment format. A 21 compartment ventilation/perfusion (V/Q) model of pulmonary blood flow processed 34,551 combinations of cardiac output, hemoglobin concentration, standard P50, base excess, VO and VCO plus three model-defining parameters: shunt, log SD and mean V/Q. The methodology behind the novel application consists of portable electrochemical detection coupled with a peak recognition algorithm for automated result output generation, validated both in laboratory and field settings. Because few longitudinal studies of foster-adoptive infants exist, it is unclear how these preplacement risk factors influence development over time. The present study examined associations between perinatal risk factors and developmental outcomes among an ethnically/racially-diverse sample of 97 infants in foster-care (56% boys) placed into adoptive homes at ages 0-19 months.

In this commentary we describe how an existing public-public partnership between a large county mental health department and a state university responded to COVID-19. This partnership, originally designed to address workforce needs, rapidly pivoted to support providers through a trauma- and resilience-informed approach to mitigating adverse mental health effects among youth and families in Los Angeles County.
