A Hypothesis-Driven, Near-Peer Physical Diagnosis Module on Streptococcal Pharyngitis Within the Pediatrics Clerkship.

Introduction: In busy clinical settings, there is limited time to teach physical examination (PE) and procedural skills, particularly when the traditional head-to-toe PE approach is time-consuming. Near-peer teaching of a more efficient approach, the hypothesis-driven PE (HDPE), increases students' learning opportunities. We developed a near-peer HDPE module to improve medical student confidence, knowledge, and skills for diagnosing and managing streptococcal pharyngitis.

Analysis of Terminated Hand and Wrist-Related Clinical Trials.

Purpose: While clinical trials provide high-quality evidence guiding medical decision-making, early trial termination can result in both lost time and resources. Our purpose was to investigate the rate of and reasons for clinical trial termination for hand and wrist-related conditions and identify study characteristics associated with early trial termination.

Acceptability, feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a compassion-based cognitive behavioural intervention for low self-esteem in sexual minority young adults.

Low self-esteem can impair daily functioning and is a risk or maintenance factor for several mental health problems. Sexual minority young adults, for example, those identifying as lesbian, gay or bisexual, on average have lower self-esteem than their heterosexual peers. Compassion-based interventions for low self-esteem might be especially beneficial for sexual minority young adults, whose higher levels of shame and self-criticism are likely to be contributing to maintenance of their low self-esteem.

Perspectives of Patients About Immediate Access to Test Results Through an Online Patient Portal.

Importance: The 21st Century Cures Act Final Rule mandates the immediate electronic availability of test results to patients, likely empowering them to better manage their health. Concerns remain about unintended effects of releasing abnormal test results to patients.

Objective: To assess patient and caregiver attitudes and preferences related to receiving immediately released test results through an online patient portal.

Synthesis and Characterization of Magnetoplasmonic Air-Stable Au@FeCo.

The synthesis of FeCo alloys as highly magnetic nanoparticles has been valuable, as far as applications for magnetic nanoparticles are concerned. However, recently, a field of magnetoplasmonics in which magnetic nanoparticles such as the FeCo alloys doped with plasmonic materials such as Au and Ag to create a hybrid nanostructure with both properties has emerged. These magnetoplasmonic metamaterials have greatly enhanced the limit of detection of analytes in spectroscopic methods, as well as providing a more widely applicable nanoparticle to broaden the use of FeCo alloys even further.

Race and Ethnicity Reporting in Randomized Controlled Trials Published in Upper-Extremity Journals.

Purpose: Hand surgery remains one of the least racially and ethnically diverse subspecialties in all of medicine, and minority patients demonstrate overall worse health care outcomes compared with White patients. Our purpose was to determine the frequency of race and ethnicity reporting in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in journals with an upper-extremity (UE) focus.

Methods: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines by searching EMBASE and MEDLINE for RCTs contained in peer-reviewed journals with an UE focus.

Improving Adherence to AAP Acute Otitis Media Guidelines in an Academic Pediatrics Practice through a Quality Improvement Project.

Introduction: Acute otitis media (AOM) is the most common reason for antibiotic use in children. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) published its latest AOM guidelines in 2013. A safety-net antibiotic prescription (SNAP) is recommended for some patients based on age, severity, and duration of symptoms.

Becoming Active Bystanders and Advocates: Teaching Medical Students to Respond to Bias in the Clinical Setting.

Introduction: Incidents of bias and microaggressions are prevalent in the clinical setting and are disproportionately experienced by racial minorities, women, and medical students. These incidents contribute to burnout. Published efforts to address these incidents are growing, but gaps remain regarding the long-term efficacy of these curricular models.

A cognitive behavioural intervention for low self-esteem in young people who have experienced stigma, prejudice, or discrimination: An uncontrolled acceptability and feasibility study.

Objectives: Stigma has been found to be associated with lower self-esteem, which increases the risk of difficulties across life domains including vulnerability to mental health problems. There are no previous studies of interventions for people experiencing low self-esteem in the context of different stigmatized characteristics. This study evaluated feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary outcomes of an intervention targeting low self-esteem in stigmatized people aged 16-24 years.

Identifying key priorities for research to protect the consumer with food hypersensitivity: A UK Food Standards Agency Priority Setting Exercise.

Introduction: Food hypersensitivity (FHS), including food allergy, coeliac disease and food intolerance, is a major public health issue. The Food Standards Agency (FSA), an independent UK Government department working to protect public health and consumers' wider interests in food, sought to identify research priorities in the area of FHS.

Methods: A priority setting exercise was undertaken, using a methodology adapted from the James Lind Alliance-the first such exercise with respect to food hypersensitivity.

Background: Research around the weedkiller Roundup is among the most contentious of the twenty-first century. Scientists have provided inconclusive evidence that the weedkiller causes cancer and other life-threatening diseases, while industry-paid research reports that the weedkiller has no adverse effect on humans or animals. Much of the controversial evidence on Roundup is rooted in the approach used to determine safe use of chemicals, defined by outdated toxicity tests.

High-Quality Assemblies for Three Invasive Social Wasps from the Genus.

Social wasps of the genus have spread to nearly all landmasses worldwide and have become significant pests in their introduced ranges, affecting economies and biodiversity. Comprehensive genome assemblies and annotations for these species are required to develop the next generation of control strategies and monitor existing chemical control. We sequenced and annotated the genomes of the common wasp (), German wasp (), and the western yellowjacket ().

Physical capacity outcomes in patients with severe obesity after 12 months of physician-led multidisciplinary team care: A case series from a public hospital clinical obesity service.

Impaired physical capacity is common in people with severe levels of obesity. We aimed to investigate changes in physical capacity outcomes in patients with severe obesity following 12 months of physician-led multidisciplinary care from a "real world" Australian public hospital setting using a case series study design. We extracted data from medical records for all of the eligible patients referred to our clinical obesity service from 2010 to 2015 (69 of 239).

Increasing the accuracy of nanopore DNA sequencing using a time-varying cross membrane voltage.

Nanopore DNA sequencing is limited by low base-calling accuracy. Improved base-calling accuracy has so far relied on specialized base-calling algorithms, different nanopores and motor enzymes, or biochemical methods to re-read DNA molecules. Two primary error modes hamper sequencing accuracy: enzyme mis-steps and sequences with indistinguishable signals.

Oxidative stress potential of the herbicides bifenox and metribuzin in the microalgae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

The widespread presence of herbicides in the aquatic environment has raised awareness about the need to develop further in depth ecotoxicological risk assessments, more specifically on potential effects on photosynthetic organisms as microalgae. The majority of the information available regarding the toxicity of herbicides towards microalgae is related to traditional toxicological and regulatory-relevant endpoints such as growth inhibition, leaving a significant gap on knowledge regarding underlying interactions and damage to biological targets. In this context, this study aimed to supplement the general toxicity information of bifenox and metribuzin in the microalgae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii using a battery of selected high-throughput methods.

Comparison of clinical and neuropathological diagnoses of neurodegenerative diseases in two centres from the Brains for Dementia Research (BDR) cohort.

Early detection and accurate diagnosis of neurodegenerative disorders may provide better epidemiological data, closer monitoring of disease progression and enable more specialised intervention. We analysed the clinical records and pathology of brain donations from 180 patients from two Brains for Dementia Research cohorts to determine the agreement between in-life clinical diagnosis and post-mortem pathological results. Clinical diagnosis was extracted from medical records and cases assigned into broad clinical groups; control, Alzheimer's disease (AD), vascular dementia (CVD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and combined diseases.

A football helmet prototype that reduces linear and rotational acceleration with the addition of an outer shell.

Objective: Amid the public health controversy surrounding American football, a helmet that can reduce linear and rotational acceleration has the potential to decrease forces transmitted to the brain. The authors hypothesized that a football helmet with an outer shell would reduce both linear and rotational acceleration. The authors' objectives were to 1) determine an optimal material for a shock-absorbing outer shell and 2) examine the ability of an outer shell to reduce linear and/or rotational acceleration.

Identification of algal growth inhibitors in treated waste water using effect-directed analysis based on non-target screening techniques.

Growth inhibition of freshwater microalga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata caused by a waste water treatment plant (WWTP) effluent extract was investigated using an effect directed analysis (EDA) approach. The objective was to identify compounds responsible for the toxicity by combining state-of-the-art sampling, bioanalytical, fractionation and non-target screening techniques. Three fractionation steps of the whole extract were performed and bioactive fractions were analysed with GC (xGC)-MS and LC-HRMS.

Assembly of 913 microbial genomes from metagenomic sequencing of the cow rumen.

The cow rumen is adapted for the breakdown of plant material into energy and nutrients, a task largely performed by enzymes encoded by the rumen microbiome. Here we present 913 draft bacterial and archaeal genomes assembled from over 800 Gb of rumen metagenomic sequence data derived from 43 Scottish cattle, using both metagenomic binning and Hi-C-based proximity-guided assembly. Most of these genomes represent previously unsequenced strains and species.

Mixture toxicity of five biocides with dissimilar modes of action on the growth and photosystem II efficiency of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

Biocides are extensively used and universally distributed. Some are highly toxic to algae, including antifoulants, herbicides, and fungicides. The inhibition of algal growth is an important regulatory endpoint for toxicity assessment of single compounds.
