The usefulness of isolated intestinal pouches of an intestinal allograft for monitoring mucosal histology during rejection episodes was studied in a canine model. Total small intestinal autotransplantation was performed in four dogs, and allotransplantation in 18 dogs. Isolated pouches from the proximal and distal ends of the allografts were brought to the skin as stomas.

Recently, the contractile protein alpha-actinin was identified in normal human platelets by its antigenic cross-reaction with a monospecific antibody to purified muscle alpha-actinin. In this study, we extend that preliminary identification of platelet alpha-actinin. Amino acid analysis, one-dimensional peptide maps, and silver stain analysis on polyacrylamide gels demonstrate that human platelet alpha-actinin shows a greater degree of similarity to smooth muscle alpha-actinin than to striated muscle alpha-actinin.

Absorption of cyclosporine and uptake of radiolabelled glucose by the transplanted small intestine in the dog was investigated to develop physiologic markers of rejection. Cyclosporine in olive oil was given orally, and glucose-14C was instilled into an isolated pouch constructed from the transplanted jejunum. Biopsies were simultaneously obtained from an isolated pouch made from the transplanted ileum.

Crohn's disease of the stomach and duodenum is uncommon and difficult to diagnose. This study reviews 23 patients with this condition seen at the Toronto General Hospital between 1970 and 1981. In 12 patients the major symptoms were due to coexisting lower intestinal Crohn's disease (primarily distal disease).

This report further evaluates the concept that the interaction of factors that originate within the liver can contribute, regulate or even initiate the actual development of hepatic regeneration after liver cell necrosis or partial hepatectomy. The effect of liver cytosol (100,000 g supernatant), both from intact adult rat liver (NLC) and from adult rat liver remnants that had been regenerating for 24 hours after 70% partial hepatectomy (PH) in posthepatectomy liver regeneration in the rat was studied. The specificity of the growth-controlling properties in liver cytosol was determined using tumor cells.
