Introduction: Patients with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) experience cognitive problems with attention, information processing speed, working memory, learning efficiency, and executive function. Commonly, patients report worsening of cognitive symptoms over time after physical and/or cognitive challenges. To determine, monitor, and manage longitudinal decrements in cognitive function after such exposures, it is important to be able to screen for cognitive dysfunction and changes over time in clinic and also remotely at home.

The sustainable control of weed populations, particularly resistant species, is a significant challenge in agriculture around the world. The α-aryl-keto-enol (aryl-KTE) class of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase)-inhibiting herbicides represent a possible solution for the control of resistant grasses even though achieving crop selectivity remains a challenge. Herein, we present some of our investigations into identifying the most promising structural features within the aryl-KTE class that give the highest chance of achieving soybean crop selectivity, whilst also maintaining strong and broad efficacy against problematic weed species.

Background: Without controlling weeds, it is estimated that about one third of global crop yields would be lost. Herbicides remain the most effective solution for weed control, but they face multiple challenges, such as the emergence and growth of resistant weed populations. Consequently, there is an urgent need for either herbicides with new modes of action or at least novel chemistries within established modes of action, with outstanding efficacy but without showing cross-resistance to the herbicides present in the prospective markets.

Background: The sustainable control of weed populations is a significant challenge facing farmers around the world. Although various methods for the control of weeds exist, the use of small molecule herbicides remains the most effective and versatile approach. Striving to find novel herbicides that combat resistant weeds via the targeting of plant specific modes of action (MoAs), we further investigated the bicyclic class of acyl-acyl carrier protein (ACP) thioesterase (FAT) inhibitors in an effort to find safe and efficacious lead candidates.

Background: Weed control is a significant challenge for farmers around the globe. Of the various methods available for combatting weeds, small molecules remain the most effective and versatile technology to date. In the search for novel chemical entities with new modes of action toward herbicide-resistant weeds, we have investigated hexahydrofuro[3,4-b]furan-based acyl-acyl carrier protein (ACP) thioesterase inhibitors inspired by X-ray co-crystal structure-based modeling studies.

Ultrathin bismuth exhibits rich physics including strong spin-orbit coupling, ferroelectricity, nontrivial topology, and light-induced structural dynamics. We use ab initio calculations to show that light can induce structural transitions to four transient phases in bismuth monolayers. These light-induced phases exhibit nontrivial topological character, which we illustrate using the recently introduced concept of spin bands and spin-resolved Wilson loops.

Background & Aims: The majority of patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) develop duodenal adenomas with a risk of progression to duodenal cancer. Endoscopic management of FAP duodenal adenomas has been proposed as a less-invasive option than surgery, but available data still are limited. Our aims were to assess the feasibility and safety of endoscopic treatment in duodenal polyposis and to evaluate its long-term efficacy in terms of recurrence and malignant degeneration.

In Nature, α-quartz crystals frequently form contact twins, which are two adjacent crystals with the same chemical structure but different crystallographic orientation, sharing a common lattice plane. As α-quartz crystallizes in a chiral space group, such twinning can occur between enantiomorphs with the same handedness or with opposite handedness. Here, we use first-principles methods to investigate the effect of twinning and chirality on the bulk and surface phonon spectra, as well as on the topological properties of phonons in α-quartz.

Background: There are various methods to control weeds, that represent considerable challenges for farmers around the globe, although applying small molecular compounds is still the most effective and versatile technology to date. In the search for novel chemical entities with new modes-of-action that can control weeds displaying resistance, we have investigated two spirocyclic classes of acyl-ACP thioesterase inhibitors based on X-ray co-crystal structures and subsequent modelling studies.

Results: By exploiting scaffold-hopping and isostere concepts, we were able to identify new spirolactam-based lead structures showing promising activity in vivo against commercially important grass weeds in line with strong target affinity.

Safeners are agrochemicals co-applied with herbicides that facilitate selective control of weeds by protecting monocot crops from chemical injury through enhancing the expression of detoxifying enzymes such as glutathione transferases (GSTs). Even though the application of safeners causes the induction of genes encoding GSTs in model dicots such as , safeners do not protect broadleaf crops from herbicide injury. In this study, we proposed that the localized induction of GSTs and the fundamental differences in their detoxifying activity between dicot and monocot species, underpin the failure of safeners to protect from herbicide toxicity.

Records of past societies confronted with natural climate change can illuminate social responses to environmental stress and environment-disease connections, especially when locally constrained high-temporal resolution paleoclimate reconstructions are available. We present a temperature and precipitation reconstruction for ~200 BCE to ~600 CE, from a southern Italian marine sedimentary archive-the first high-resolution (~3 years) climate record from the heartland of the Roman Empire, stretching from the so-called Roman Climate Optimum to the Late Antique Little Ice Age. We document phases of instability and cooling from ~100 CE onward but more notably after ~130 CE.

Josephson junctions in InAs nanowires proximitized with an Al shell can host gate-tunable Andreev bound states. Depending on the bound state occupation, the fermion parity of the junction can be even or odd. Coherent control of Andreev bound states has recently been achieved within each parity sector, but it is impeded by incoherent parity switches due to excess quasiparticles in the superconducting environment.

In the search for new chemical entities that can control resistant weeds by addressing novel modes of action (MoAs), we were interested in further exploring a compound class that contained a 1,8-naphthyridine core. By leveraging scaffold hopping methodologies, we were able to discover the new thiazolopyridine compound class that act as potent herbicidal molecules. Further biochemical investigations allowed us to identify that the thiazolopyridines inhibit acyl-acyl carrier protein (ACP) thioesterase (FAT), with this being further confirmed via an X-ray cocrystal structure.

There are several methods to control weeds, which impose particular challenges for farmers in all parts of the world, although applying small molecular compounds still remains the most efficient technology to date. However, plants can evolve to become resistant toward active ingredients which is also the case for protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) inhibitors, a class of highly effective herbicides in use for more than 50 years. Hence, it is essential to continuously discover and develop new herbicidal PPO inhibitors with enhanced intrinsic activity, an improved resistance profile, enhanced crop safety, favorable physicochemical properties, and a clean toxicological profile.

Background: Whilst there are several methods to control weeds, which continuously plague farmers around the globe, the application of small molecular compounds is still the most effective technology to date. Plants can evolve to become resistant to PPO-inhibitors, a class of herbicides in commercial use since the 1960s. It is therefore essential to continuously develop new herbicides based on this mode-of-action with enhanced intrinsic activity, an improved resistance profile and favourable physicochemical properties.

We report the design, synthesis and biological evaluation of simplified analogues of the herbicidal natural product (+)-cornexistin. Guided by an X-Ray co-crystal structure of cornexistin bound to transketolase from Zea mays, we attempted to identify the key interactions that are necessary for cornexistin to maintain its herbicidal profile. This resulted in the preparation of three novel analogues investigating the importance of substituents that are located on the nine-membered ring of cornexistin.
