Video-assisted mediastinoscopic and laparoscopic transhiatal esophagectomy for esophageal cancer.

Background: Mediastinoscopy was originally applied for lymph node biopsy and mediastinal tumor resection. Improved video imaging with spreadable working channels enabled mediastinoscopy for inspection and tissue biopsy in the superior mediastinum but it is rarely used in minimally invasive esophageal cancer surgery. In this prospective trial, the practicability and security of spreadable video-assisted mediastinoscopic combined with laparoscopic transhiatal esophagectomy (VAME) with video-assisted thoracoscopic esophagectomy (VATE) were compared.

A Validated Risk Prediction Model for Bone Fragility in Children With Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Although bone fragility may already be present at diagnosis of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), routine performance of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in every child is not universally feasible. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a risk prediction model for low lumbar spine bone mineral density (LS BMD Z-score ≤ -2.0) at diagnosis, as an important indicator for fracture risk and further treatment-related BMD aggravation.

Characterization of hepatic zonation in mice by mass-spectrometric and antibody-based proteomics approaches.

Periportal and perivenous hepatocytes show zonal heterogeneity in metabolism and signaling. Here, hepatic zonation in mouse liver was analyzed by non-targeted mass spectrometry (MS) and by the antibody-based DigiWest technique, yielding a comprehensive overview of protein expression in periportal and perivenous hepatocytes. Targeted immunoaffinity-based proteomics were used to substantiate findings related to drug metabolism.

Safety of elective paediatric surgery during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic.

Introduction: Corona-virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had a huge impact on the delivery of healthcare worldwide, particularly elective surgery. There is a lack of data regarding risk of postoperative COVID-19 infection in children undergoing elective surgery, and regarding the utility of pre-operative COVID-19 testing, and preoperative "cocooning" or restriction of movements. The purpose of this present study was to examine the safety of elective paediatric Otolaryngology surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic with respect to incidence of postoperative symptomatic COVID-19 infection or major respiratory complications.

Purpose: Thyroid dysfunction, including thyroiditis, is well recognized in COVID-19 patients. We evaluated thyroid ultrasonographic features among COVID-19 survivors, which are less well known.

Methods: Adult COVID-19 survivors without known thyroid disorders who attended dedicated COVID-19 clinic underwent thyroid ultrasonography and assessment of thyroid function and autoimmunity.

A major barrier to HIV eradication is the persistence of viral reservoirs. Resting CD4 T cells are thought to be one of the major viral reservoirs, However, the underlying mechanism regulating HIV infection and the establishment of viral reservoir in T cells remain poorly understood. We have investigated the role of IP-10 in the establishment of HIV reservoirs in CD4 T cells, and found that in HIV-infected individuals, plasma IP-10 was elevated, and positively correlated with HIV viral load and viral reservoir size.

Outcomes of preoperative real-time polymerase chain reaction testing for SARS CoV-2 in elective otolaryngology surgical patients during the pandemic: a prospective cohort study.

Quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) was implemented to detect miR-663a expression in glioblastoma tissues and the adjacent normal tissues.

Contraceptive use and preferences among females with sickle cell disease.

Objectives: Females with sickle cell disease now have a life expectancy that extends well into and beyond their reproductive years. Pregnancy and childbirth are accompanied by high morbidity and mortality in this population, rendering contraception a critical part of their health care.

Study Design: We approached adult female patients of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania hematology clinic who were of reproductive age (ages 18-45) and carried a diagnosis of sickle cell disease.

A number of studies have demonstrated that patients with autoimmune disease have lower levels of vitamin D prompting speculation that vitamin D might suppress inflammation and immune responses in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).  The objective of this study was to compare vitamin D levels in children with JIA at disease onset with healthy children. We hypothesized that children and adolescents with JIA have lower vitamin D levels than healthy children and adolescents.

The effects of systematic psychological nursing on the sleep quality of schizophrenic patients with sleep disorders.

Objective: This study was designed to explore the effects of systematic psychological nursing (SPN) on the sleep quality of schizophrenic patients with sleep disorders.

Methods: A total of 101 schizophrenic patients with sleep disorders were divided into the control group (50 patients who underwent routine nursing) and the observation group (51 patients who underwent SPN, including health education, psychological nursing, cognitive intervention, reasonable entertainment, and family and social support). One month after the nursing, the sleep quality (the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores), the improvement in the patients' schizophrenic symptoms (their Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) scores), their sense of self-esteem (their Self-Esteem Scale (SES) scores), their medication compliance (their Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS) scores), their self-efficacy (their Strategies Used by People to Promote Health (SUPPH) scores), and their quality of life (Generic Quality of Life Inventory (GQOLI)-74 scores) were compared between the two groups.
