Dietitians, experts in food and nutrition, play a vital role in fostering the well-being of Canadians. Given that 1 in 20 Canadians are Muslim, access to culturally safe care is essential for their health.

Robot-Assisted Retroperitoneoscopic Traction-Aligned Suture Repair of Failed Laparoscopic Pyeloplasty for Ureteropelvic Junction Obstruction.

A case of redo pyeloplasty using robot-assisted retroperitoneoscopic pyeloplasty (RARP) for failed primary laparoscopic pyeloplasty (LP) for ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) is reported. A 12-year-old boy had LP elsewhere. He was referred for management of persistent left hydronephrosis, but was managed conservatively due to minimal symptoms and stable radioisotopic renography.

Nested sleep oscillations, emerging from asynchronous states in coordinated bursts, are critical for memory consolidation. Whether these bursts emerge intrinsically or from an underlying rhythm is unknown. Here, we show a previously undescribed respiratory-driven oscillation in the human hippocampus that couples with cardinal sleep oscillations.

Angiopoietin-1 attenuates lipopolysaccharide-induced endotoxemia in a Hirschsprung's disease murine model by improving intestinal vascular integrity: implications for treating postoperative Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis.

Gut microbiota composition is altered significantly in these cohorts suggesting a causative link between diet, microbiota and disease.

Impact of Epithelial Claudin-4 and Leukotriene B4 Receptor 2 in Normoganglionic Hirschsprung Disease Colon on Post Pull-through Enterocolitis.

Purpose: To investigate whether Leukotriene B4 receptor 2 (BLT-2), an upstream regulator of tight junction protein (TJP) Claudin-4, and TJPs could be etiologic factors in Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis (HAEC) after pull-through (PT) for Hirschsprung disease (HD).

Methods: Normoganglionic colon (HD-N) and aganglionic rectum (HD-A) specimens from rectal/rectosigmoid (R/RS) or descending/transverse (D/T) HD were assessed using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) for Occludin, TJP-1, TJP-2, Junctional adhesion molecule (JAM)-1, JAM-2, Claudin-1, Claudin-3, Claudin-4, and BLT-2 and immunoblotting for Claudin-4 using fresh specimens obtained intraoperatively (2021-2024; n = 17; R/RS = 15 and D/T = 2). Claudin-4 immunohistochemistry was also evaluated quantitatively using preserved (n = 29; R/RS = 20 and D/T = 9; 2009-2021) and fresh HD specimens for comparison with anorectal malformation patients having colostomy closure as controls (n = 42) and between HD-A versus HD-N, R/RS versus D/T, and HAEC (+) versus HAEC (-).

Accuracy of the WatchBP Office Central as a Type 2 device for non-invasive estimation of central aortic blood pressure in children and adolescents.

High blood pressure (BP) in childhood is a recognised precursor of elevated cardiovascular risk in adulthood. Brachial BP is normally used for clinical decision making, but central BP may be a better marker of pressure load on the heart. There is a paucity of validated non-invasive, automated devices for estimating central BP in children and adolescents.

In Canada, unhealthy dietary patterns comprise diets with poor nutrient density and are associated with chronic conditions. Plant-based diets have gained popularity due to their ability to provide a nutritionally adequate healthy diet. This study aims to compare sociodemographic, socioeconomic, and health characteristics, and diet quality between Canadian adults following plant-based and omnivore diets as well as assess the extent to which key nutrient intakes are of public health concern among Canadians following plant-based diets.

Questioning the Correlation Between Incidence of Hirschsprung Disease and Indications for Rectal Biopsy.

To review the indications for rectal mucosal/submucosal biopsy (RMSBx) used for diagnosing Hirschsprung's disease (HD) in pediatric patients. The medical records of all children between 1 and 15 years old assessed for chronic constipation between 2012 and 2022 were reviewed. Until the end of 2018, enema usage (E+) was a major indication for RMSBx.

"I Haven't Had Moose Meat in a Long Time": Exploring Urban Indigenous Perspectives on Traditional Foods in Saskatchewan.

This qualitative study investigates the perspectives of urban Indigenous individuals in Saskatchewan, Canada, regarding their consumption of traditional foods. Through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 14 participants across Saskatoon, Regina, and Prince Albert, the research aimed to uncover the benefits, risks, and barriers associated with acquiring and consuming traditional foods. Participants emphasized the nutritional advantages of traditional foods, such as higher nutrient density and absence of industrial additives, which they linked to improved health outcomes and alignment with Indigenous biology.

Evaluating perioperative stresses in children by noninvasive modalities using salivary cortisol and autonomic reactivity.

Purpose: Salivary cortisol (SalC) and low to high pulse ratio (LHR) were used for evaluating perioperative stresses in children.

Methods: Children aged 6 months-16 years having elective general (thoracic/abdominal) or minor (open/minimally invasive: MI) procedures underwent pulse monitoring during AM (08:00-12:00) and PM (17:00-21:00) saliva collections from the day before surgery (S-1) to 3 days after surgery (S + 3). SalC/LHR were correlated with age, sex, caregiver attendance, operative time, and surgical site/approach using mixed model analysis and face/numeric pain rating scales (FRS/NRS).

Background: Overhead athletes are particularly susceptible to elbow valgus extension overload syndrome and development of pathologic changes in the posteromedial elbow. Though arthroscopic débridement/osteophyte resection is frequently performed, few studies have analyzed the outcomes of this procedure and none have specifically addressed professional level athletes.

This qualitative study explores the perceptions of healthy eating, along with the facilitators and barriers to such practices, among urban Indigenous peoples in Saskatoon, Regina, and Prince Albert. Through virtual interviews, we engage 14 participants from these cities.

The known I^{π}=8_{1}^{+}, E_{x}=2129-keV isomer in the semimagic nucleus ^{130}Cd_{82} was populated in the projectile fission of a ^{238}U beam at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory at RIKEN. The high counting statistics of the accumulated data allowed us to determine the excitation energy, E_{x}=2001.2(7)  keV, and half-life, T_{1/2}=57(3)  ns, of the I^{π}=6_{1}^{+} state based on γγ coincidence information.

Structural Connectivity between Olfactory Tubercle and Ventrolateral Periaqueductal Gray Implicated in Human Feeding Behavior.

The olfactory tubercle (TUB), also called the tubular striatum, receives direct input from the olfactory bulb and, along with the nucleus accumbens, is one of the two principal components of the ventral striatum. As a key component of the reward system, the ventral striatum is involved in feeding behavior, but the vast majority of research on this structure has focused on the nucleus accumbens, leaving the TUB's role in feeding behavior understudied. Given the importance of olfaction in food seeking and consumption, olfactory input to the striatum should be an important contributor to motivated feeding behavior.

Optical Trocar Access for Retroperitoneal Robotic-Assisted Pyeloplasty in Children with Ureteropelvic Junction Obstruction.

Retroperitoneal robotic-assisted pyeloplasty (ret-RAP) for ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) requires a larger retroperitoneal space (RS) to maintain specified distances between robotic (da Vinci) trocars and between trocars and the region of interest. A modified closed technique (MOT) and conventional closed technique (COT) were compared for creating an adequate RS with optical trocars. RS access in children with UPJO who underwent ret-RAP ( = 30) was MOT ( = 15) and COT ( = 15).

Retroperitoneoscopic simple nondismembered pyeloplasty (SNDP) with da Vinci Si assistance was developed because of a possible risk for alignment shift after retroperitoneoscopic diamond-shaped bypass pyeloplasty (Diamond-Bypass; DP). Outcomes of SNDP and DP were compared. For SNDP, a small longitudinal incision is made on the border of the dilated pelvis and narrowed ureter at the ureteropelvic junction (UPJ).

Intergenerational Food Insecurity, Underlying Factors, and Opportunities for Intervention in Momostenango, Guatemala.

Achieving sustainable food security in Guatemala, where nearly half the population is food insecure and 50% of children face chronic malnutrition, is challenging. This mixed-methods study aimed to identify the impacts of climate change on food production, community food security, and household food security. Twelve agricultural group leaders in six communities were interviewed using semi-structured guides.

Pulmonary artery diameter ratio as a prognostic indicator of congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

Background: Following on from an earlier study published in 2008 about left pulmonary artery (LPA) flow measured on serial echocardiography being strongly prognostic in left-sided congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) and the ratio of LPA to right pulmonary artery (RPA) diameters being a simple and reliable indicator for commencing nitric oxide (NO) therapy, the ratio of LPA:RPA diameters (PA ratio or PAR) was hypothesized to possibly reflect cardiopulmonary stresses accompanying CDH better.

Methods: Subjects with isolated left-sided CDH treated between 2007 and 2020 at a single pediatric surgical center were recruited and classified according to survival. Data obtained retrospectively for subject demographics, clinical course, LPA/RPA diameters, and PAR were compared between survivors and non-survivors.
