Unlabelled: Cardiovascular diseases, which are the leading cause of death in Croatia, are linked to the high prevalence of hypertension. Both are associated with high salt intake, which was determined almost two decades ago when Croatian Action on Salt and Health (CRASH) was launched. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate salt, potassium, and iodine intake using a single 24 h urine sample in a random sample of the adult Croatian population and to analyse trends in salt consumption after the CRASH was intensively started.

Renal denervation (RDN) as a method of treating arterial hypertension (AH) was introduced in Croatia in 2012. A multidisciplinary team and a network of hospitals that diagnose and treat patients with severe forms of AH were established, and a very strict diagnostic-treatment algorithm was prepared. At monthly meetings patients with truly resistant hypertension who were candidates for RDN were discussed.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to analyze trends in the use of postnatal steroids (PNS) in very preterm infants (24-28 weeks gestational age) and their association with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and mortality using international data from 2010 to 2018.
  • - Over 47,000 infants were examined, revealing a rise in PNS usage from 18% in 2010 to 26% in 2018; however, rates of BPD remained stable at around 39%.
  • - Factors such as lower gestational age, male gender, small size for gestational age, and the presence of persistent ductus arteriosus (PDA) were linked to higher

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how obesity affects the prevalence estimates of chronic kidney disease (CKD) when using different equations, specifically the CKD EPI equation versus de-indexed equations that account for body surface area (BSA).
  • - In a sample of over 2,000 individuals, it was found that using the CKD EPI equation leads to a significantly higher prevalence of CKD and lower prevalence of glomerular hyperfiltration (GHF) in obese subjects compared to de-indexed equations (CKD DBi and CKD Mi).
  • - The findings suggest that the CKD EPI equation overestimates CKD and underestimates GHF in obese individuals, indicating it may not be reliable for about

Regardless of having a similar antihypertensive effect, different antihypertensive drug classes have a different effect on albuminuria. Patients with albuminuria will usually need more than one drug to achieve blood pressure control, particularly if the aim is also to reduce albuminuria. Albuminuria is independently associated with cardiovascular and renal risk regardless of diabetes status.

Despite prolonged survival and better quality of life as compared to dialysis, kidney transplantation frequently presents with a complex set of medical issues that require intensive management to protect graft function. Metabolic acidosis has an impact on several metabolic complications such as mineral and muscle metabolism, nutritional status and anemia. It may also have an effect on graft function, possibly through the stimulation of adaptive mechanisms aimed at maintaining acid-base homeostasis.
