Background And Objectives: Nonmedical use of prescription tranquilizers/sedatives (NMUPTS) is associated with a 15-times increased likelihood of polysubstance use (PSU). This is correlated with an increased risk for use disorders and death, therefore, to inform prevention efforts, we identified PSU profiles among adults reporting sleep-related NMUPTS.

Methods: National Survey on Drug Use and Health 2015-2019 participants with past 12-month sleep-related NMUPTS and use of an additional drug(s) (n = 2603) were studied.

Background: Preventing anxiety and depression among college students is a pressing public health need. Recent meta-analyses have examined mobile mindfulness interventions in adult populations; however, college students are in a unique developmental stage and institutional setting.

In response to a need expressed by water actors to support them in identifying appropriate actions for protecting drinking water sources, we modelled, designed, implemented, tested, and validated a prototype case-based reasoning (CBR) system. This required an intensive knowledge acquisition and structuring process which we conducted in collaboration with 102 water management and governance actors in Quebec, Canada. Knowledge was organized in a case base containing nearly 200 past experiences implementing water protection actions at different decision-making scales (local, regional, provincial), by various organizations (government, municipalities, water-related associations), over the last two decades.

We investigated lattice strain on alloyed surfaces using ∼10 nm core-shell nanoparticles with controlled size, shape, and composition. We developed a wet-chemistry method for synthesizing small octahedral PdPt alloy nanoparticles and Au@PdPt core-shell nanoparticles with Pd-Pt alloy shells and Au cores. Upon introduction of the Au core, the size and shape of the overall nanostructure and the composition of the alloyed PdPt were maintained, enabling the use of the electrooxidation of formic acid as a probe to compare the surface structures with different lattice strain.

Thermoelectric devices, which allow direct conversion of heat into electrical energy, require materials with improved figures of merit ( z T ) in order to ensure widespread adoption. Several techniques have been proposed to increase the z T of known thermoelectric materials through the reduction of thermal conductivity, including heavy atom substitution, grain size reduction and inclusion of a semicoherent second phase. Building on identity theories and social learning theory, we test the notion that new leaders will model the abusive behaviors of their superiors only under certain conditions. Specifically, we hypothesize that new leaders will model abusive supervisory behaviors when (a) abusive superiors are perceived to be competent, based on the performance of their teams and (b) new leaders' ideal leadership self-concepts are high on tyranny or low on sensitivity. Results of an experiment in which we manipulated abusive supervisory behaviors using a professional actor, and created a role change where 93 individuals moved from team member to team leader role, generally support our hypotheses.

The use of attenuated vaccines or the occurrence of low virulent T-lymphotropic or B-lymphotropic viruses in flocks may alter the immune responses of young chicks in spite of the absence of clinical signs. Infections with a low virulent T-lymphotropic chicken infectious anaemia virus (lvCIAV) followed by infection with an intermediate B-lymphotropic infectious bursal disease virus (iIBDV) were conducted in specific pathogen free chicks. This paper reports findings from an evaluation of the local implementation of a procedural public health programme whose objective is to create healthy environments (HE) for vulnerable families in the province of Quebec (Canada) through the funding of local projects. Considering the potential issue of programme-context interaction, our research question was the following: Does the procedural nature of this HE programme result in variation between local cases in terms of the types of projects and collaborations it subsidizes? Given that the creation of healthy environments requires intersectoral health action to address social determinants of health, the data were analysed with respect to intersectorality and cooperation. Results of this qualitative multiple case study (n = 8), for the period 2004-2009, show that the majority of subsidized projects were in the health and social services sector and focused on parenting, parent-child attachment, nutrition and the social networks of families.
