Unlabelled: Using a dataset of higher education institutional alliances within the framework of the European University initiative (EUi), we test empirically whether the policy-defined goal of a relative balance between and within the scheme has been achieved. Specifically, we provide a descriptive and analytical account of the diversity of the higher education institutions (HEIs) participating in the EUi, the composition of-as well as the mechanisms behind-the formation of individual alliances. We observe that alliance formation activated the deep sociological mechanisms of hierarchisation, with the alliances largely reproducing the existing .

The structure and functioning of ecosystems are largely determined by the interactions between species within a biological community. Among these interactions, species exhibiting similar vertical and spatial prey preferences can be identified, thereby belonging to the same trophic guild. Our study explored some trophic characteristics of a diverse megafaunal community (cetaceans, tunas, seabirds) in the Bay of Biscay (BoB).

It has been proposed that autistic people experience a temporal distortion whereby the temporal binding window of multisensory integration is extended. Research to date has focused on autistic children so whether these differences persist into adulthood remains unknown. In addition, the possibility that the previous observations have arisen from between-group differences in response bias, rather than perceptual differences, has not been addressed.

Background: Posterior retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy (PRA) is purported to be superior to the laparoscopic transperitoneal approach (LA) in patients with a select spectrum of benign adrenal pathologies. Advantages attributed to the technique include minimal blood loss, shortened operative times, and decreased postoperative pain, explained anatomically by the direct access to the adrenal gland. Reduced workspace is a limitation.

In a recent study on visual episodic memory (Desaunay, Clochon, et al., 2020), we have shown event-related potentials (ERPs) differences associated with priming (150-300 msec), familiarity (350-470 msec), and recollection (600-700 msec), in young people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) compared with typical development (TD). To go further into the study of the processes of storage and retrieval of the memory trace, we re-analyzed Desaunay, Clochon, et al's data using time-frequency analysis, that is, event-related synchronization and desynchronization (ERS/ERD).

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has highlighted the need for improved technologies to help control the spread of contagious pathogens. While rapid point-of-need testing plays a key role in strategies to rapidly identify and isolate infectious patients, current test approaches have significant shortcomings related to assay limitations and sample type. Direct quantification of viral shedding in exhaled particles may offer a better rapid testing approach, since SARS-CoV-2 is believed to spread mainly by aerosols.

Objectives: We performed exhaled breath (EB) and nasopharyngeal (NP) quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and NP rapid antigen testing (NP RAT) of SARS-CoV-2 infections with different variants.

Methods: We included immuno-naïve alpha-infected (n = 11) and partly boosted omicron-infected patients (n = 8) as high-risk contacts. We compared peak NP and EB qPCR cycle time (ct) values between cohorts (Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test).

Previous studies have shown that the manufacturer's default preoperative plans for total knee arthroplasty with patient-specific guides require frequent, time-consuming changes by the surgeon. Currently, no research has been done on predicting preoperative plans for orthopedic surgery using machine learning. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate whether artificial intelligence (AI) driven planning tools can create surgeon and patient-specific preoperative plans that require fewer changes by the surgeon.

Article Synopsis
  • The report discusses a rare cause of acute pancreatitis not linked to alcohol or gallstones, emphasizing the importance of imaging techniques like CT scans for diagnosis.
  • A CT scan identified a duodenal jejunal intussusception caused by a benign inflammatory fibroid tumor, which acted as a "lead point."
  • After the tumor was surgically removed, the patient recovered well and did not experience any further episodes of acute pancreatitis.

Background: Extra-levator abdominoperineal resection (ELAPE) performed in the prone jack-knife position is a new technique in the developing world. Literature on the outcomes of ELAPE in a developing country context is scarce. The objective was to assess early outcomes after ELAPE in the prone jack-knife position, and to compare outcomes of patients who underwent the abdominal part of the procedure performed laparoscopically with an open group, at a tertiary institution in Cape Town.

Accurate image reconstruction in color lens-free imaging has proven challenging. The color image reconstruction of a sample is impacted not only by how strongly the illumination intensity is absorbed at a given spectral range, but also by the lack of phase information recorded on the image sensor. We present a compact and cost-effective approach of addressing the need for phase retrieval to enable robust color image reconstruction in lens-free imaging.

Behavioral data on episodic recollection in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) point limited relational memory functioning. However, the involvement of successive memory processes in the profile of episodic memory in ASD needs more study. Here, we used event-related potentials (ERP) to investigate the time course of episodic recollection with an associative recognition paradigm with picture pairs.

Rewards act as a motivator for positive behavior and learning. Although compounding evidence indicates that reward processing operates differently in autistic individuals who do not have co-occurring learning disabilities, little is known about individuals who have such difficulties or other complex needs. This study aimed first to assess the feasibility of using an adapted reward devaluation paradigm to examine basic reward processes in this underrepresented population, and second to investigate whether autistic children and adolescents with complex needs would show dynamic behavioral changes in response to changes in the motivational value of a reward.

We present a compressive lens-free technique that performs tomographic imaging across a cubic millimeter-scale volume from highly sparse data. Compared with existing lens-free 3D microscopy systems, our method requires an order of magnitude fewer multi-angle illuminations for tomographic reconstruction, leading to a compact, cost-effective and scanning-free setup with a reduced data acquisition time to enable high-throughput 3D imaging of dynamic biological processes. We apply a fast proximal gradient algorithm with composite regularization to address the ill-posed tomographic inverse problem.

Autistic people may be more likely to be interviewed by police as a victim/witness, yet they experience social communication difficulties alongside specific memory difficulties that can impact their ability to recall information from memory. Police interviewing techniques do not take account of these differences, and so are often ineffective. We developed a new technique for interviewing autistic witnesses, referred to a Witness-Aimed First Account, which was designed to better support differences in the way that autistic witnesses process information in memory.

Lens-free holographic microscopy (LFHM) provides a cost-effective tool for large field-of-view imaging in various biomedical applications. However, due to the unit optical magnification, its spatial resolution is limited by the pixel size of the imager. Pixel super-resolution (PSR) technique tackles this problem by using a series of sub-pixel shifted low-resolution (LR) lens-free holograms to form the high-resolution (HR) hologram.

The Florida Everglades is infested with Burmese pythons caused by the release of exotic pets in the 1980s. The current estimates are between 30,000 and 300,000 pythons, where the result is a severe decline in Everglade mammals: 90% reductions in raccoon, opossum, bobcats, and foxes. The marsh rabbits are completely gone.

Spectral cameras with integrated thin-film Fabry-Perot filters have become increasingly important in many applications. These applications often require the detection of spectral features at specific wavelengths or to quantify small variations in the spectrum. This can be challenging since thin-film filters are sensitive to the angle of incidence of the light.

Spectral cameras with integrated thin-film Fabry-Perot filters enable many different applications. Some applications require the detection of spectral features that are only visible at specific wavelengths, and some need to quantify small spectral differences that are undetectable with RGB color cameras. One factor that influences the central wavelength of thin-film filters is the angle of incidence.

The high rate of drug attrition caused by cardiotoxicity is a major challenge for drug development. Here, we developed a reflective lens-free imaging (RLFI) approach to non-invasively record cell deformation in cardiac monolayers with high temporal (169 fps) and non-reconstructed spatial resolution (352 µm) over a field-of-view of maximally 57 mm. The method is compatible with opaque surfaces and silicon-based devices.

Background: Interval timing, the ability to judge the duration of short events, has been shown to be compromised in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Timing abilities are ubiquitous and underlie behaviours as varied as sensory integration, motor coordination or communication. It has been suggested that atypical temporal processing in ASD could contribute to some of the disorder's symptoms, in particular motor clumsiness and difficulties in social interaction and communication.
