It has been suggested that proteasome activity is essential for tumor cell proliferation and drug resistance development. We have previously shown that natural and synthetic ester bond-containing tea polyphenols are selective inhibitors of the chymotrypsin-like activity of the proteasome. The most abundant catechin in green tea is (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate [(-)-EGCG], which has been found by many laboratories to exhibit the most potent anticancer activity.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOsmium tetroxide is reduced by molecular hydrogen in the presence of ligands in both polar and nonpolar solvents. In CHCl3 containing pyridine (py) or 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), OsO4 is reduced by H2 to the known Os(VI) dimers L2Os(O)2(mu-O)2Os(O)2L2 (L2 = py2, phen). However, in the absence of ligands in CHCl3 and other nonpolar solvents, OsO4 is unreactive toward H2 over a week at ambient temperatures.

The dog locus encodes the eyes absent-1 (eya1) gene and single point mutations were found in three independent dog alleles, each prematurely truncating the expressed protein within the Eya domain. Moreover, morpholino-mediated knockdown of eya1 gene function phenocopies the dog-eared mutation.

Unfortunately, the most abundant green tea polyphenol (-)-epigallocatechin gallate or (-)-EGCG is very unstable in neutral or alkaline medium. This instability leads to a low bioavailability.

In vitro cell culture studies show that tea polyphenols potently induce apoptotic cell death and cell cycle arrest in tumor cells but not in their normal cell counterparts. Green tea polyphenols affect several signal transduction pathways, including growth factor-mediated, the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)-dependent, and ubiquitin/proteasome degradation pathways.

Factors affecting selectivity for benzylic vs. aromatic C-H bond activation have been examined.

The preferred site for a boryl ligand depends on the electron count of the complex under consideration. Our studies show that the very strong sigma-donating boryl ligands choose to occupy coordination sites such that those orbitals accommodating metal d electrons have minimal metal-boryl sigma-antibonding character.

Objective: To investigate the movement of the ischial tuberosities and the redistribution of interface pressure during manual wheelchair propulsion.
Design: Measurement of ischial tuberosity positions and comparison with corresponding position of the zones of peak pressure by using independent samples t tests. Analysis of variance was used to compare peak and average pressures under static and dynamic conditions.
Germ line mutations in the Adenomatous polyposis coli tumor suppressor gene cause a hereditary form of intestinal tumorigenesis in both mice and man. Here we show that in Apc(Min/+) mice, which carry a heterozygous germ line mutation at codon 850 of Apc, there is progressive loss of immature and mature thymocytes from approximately 80 days of age with complete regression of the thymus by 120 days. In addition, Apc(Min/+) mice show parallel depletion of splenic natural killer (NK) cells, immature B cells, and B progenitor cells in bone marrow due to complete loss of interleukin 7 (IL-7)-dependent B-cell progenitors.

Other than the one-step mechanism via a four-center transition state and the two-step mechanism through an oxidative addition/reductive elimination pathway, a new one-step mechanism, with a transition state formed under oxidative addition, has been found. Based on the intrinsic reaction coordinate calculations, we found that the trajectories of the transferring hydrogen atom in the metathesis processes studied are similar to each other regardless of the nature of reaction mechanisms.

The structures of 1, 2, and 4.CH(2)Cl(2) were determined by X-ray diffraction and show octahedral coordination geometry around the metal centers.

Our aim was to compare the dose effect in the prevention of tumor recurrence.
Methods: A prospective randomized controlled trial was conducted in patients with curative resection of HCC; they were given either one intra-arterial dose of cisplatin/lipiodol, or received four doses, once every 3 months.

Objective: To determine whether oral acetylcysteine prevents acute deterioration in renal function in patients with moderate renal insufficiency who undergo elective coronary angiography.
