Association of BRAF V600E Status of Incident Melanoma and Risk for a Second Primary Malignancy: A Population-Based Study.

Mutations of the BRAF oncogene occur in both melanomas and several other cancers. Our objective was to determine if mutant BRAF V600E expression in a population-based cohort of patients with melanoma was associated with the development of a second primary malignancy of any type. Using the resources of the Rochester Epidemiology Project, we retrospectively identified 380 patients aged 18 to 60 years who were diagnosed with an incident melanoma from 1970 through 2009.

Background: Although there are reports on COVID-19 in pediatrics, the characteristics of the population of each country, its health systems, and how the pandemic was addressed could give the disease distinctive features worldwide. We aimed to describe the characteristics of patients hospitalized for COVID-19 in a tertiary pediatric hospital in the City of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Methods: We conducted a descriptive study, including all patients hospitalized for COVID-19 from 04/26/2020 to 10/31/2020 in a tertiary pediatric hospital.

Cutaneous operations are generally safe procedures with minimal major risks. Excessive bleeding occasionally occurs, especially for patients taking antithrombotic medications. Conversely, stopping these medications before cutaneous surgery may increase the risk of a thromboembolic event.

We describe herein a simple procedure for quantifying endospore abundances in ancient and organic-rich permafrost. We repeatedly (10x) extracted and fractionated permafrost using a tandem filter assembly composed of 3 and 0.2 μm filters.

Purpose: It has been suggested that retinal blood vessel arborization (RBVA) is unique to each individual. We examined this claim in a pedigree that included two pairs of monozygotic twins.

Methods: Fundus photographs were taken of subjects belonging to this pedigree to compare the pattern of their RBVA.

Harm reduction in an emergency response to homelessness during South Africa's COVID-19 lockdown.

Background: Caledonian Stadium, the main mass temporary shelter for homeless people in the City of Tshwane, was created as a local response to the imperatives of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) National State of Disaster lockdown in South Africa. This is a case study of the coordinated emergency healthcare response provided by the University of Pretoria's Department of Family Medicine between 24 March and 6 April 2020.

Background: The Community Oriented Substance Use Programme (COSUP) is the first publicly funded, community-based programmatic response to the use of illegal substances in South Africa. It is founded on a systems thinking, public health and clinical care harm reduction approach.

Preeclampsia-Associated Multivessel Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection.

Pregnancy-associated spontaneous coronary artery dissection (PASCAD) accounts for less than 5% of spontaneous coronary artery dissection cases and is comparatively more fulminant or clinically aggressive. Several factors associated with PASCAD include black ethnicity, multiparity, hypertension, advanced maternal age, and age at first childbirth. This atypical case highlights a preeclamptic patient presenting with an ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction in which multivessel dissection of both the left anterior descending and right coronary arteries were deemed co-culprit lesions for the index event.

Cardiac myxomas are the most common benign tumors of the heart. We describe the rare phenomenon of myxomatous embolization, resulting in a non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction treated successfully with surgical excision. The routine early use of both transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography is pivotal in selecting an optimal management strategy for these patients.

Endovascular Embolization of a Dissected External Carotid Artery Pseudoaneurysm in a Young Female with Neurofibromatosis Complicated by Preeclampsia.

Carotid artery pseudoaneurysms are infrequently encountered in clinical practice. Major contributory etiologies include blunt trauma, infections, cystic medial necrosis, fibromuscular dysplasia, arteriosclerosis, and congenital abnormalities. The authors report an exceedingly rare case of a dissected external carotid artery pseudoaneurysm in a 26-year-old female patient with neurofibromatosis complicated by preeclampsia at 28-week period of gestation, safely and successfully treated by coil embolization.

Metabolism and Biodegradation of Spacecraft Cleaning Reagents by Strains of Spacecraft-Associated .

Spacecraft assembly facilities are oligotrophic and low-humidity environments, which are routinely cleaned using alcohol wipes for benchtops and spacecraft materials, and alkaline detergents for floors. Despite these cleaning protocols, spacecraft assembly facilities possess a persistent, diverse, dynamic, and low abundant core microbiome, where the are among the dominant members of the community. In this report, we show that several spacecraft-associated metabolize or biodegrade the spacecraft cleaning reagents of ethanol (ethyl alcohol), 2-propanol (isopropyl alcohol), and Kleenol 30 (floor detergent) under ultraminimal conditions.

Ticagrelor-Induced Angioedema: A Rare and Unexpected Phenomenon.

Angioedema can cause potentially life-threatening airway obstruction. This case report describes an exceedingly rare episode of ticagrelor-induced hypersensitivity reaction, manifesting as angioedema with periorbital and likely respiratory involvement. The heart team should be vigilant for this precarious condition which may require emergent airway management.

Contrast Media-Induced Anaphylaxis Causing a Stress-Related Cardiomyopathy Post Percutaneous Coronary Intervention: Case Report.

Anaphylaxis is a sudden-onset, severe hypersensitivity reaction that can be potentially fatal. It can often transition to refractory hemodynamic instability, eventually resulting in death. Stress-related cardiomyopathies (SRCs) have multifactorial etiologies, including being linked to excessive catecholamine release in periods of intense stress.

Background: To evaluate professional competences is the main goal of every training program; the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is a useful tool for this task.
