Fix my food: An urgent call to action from adolescents on how they experience and want to see change in their food systems.

Background: Global food systems are failing adolescents. Poor diet quality driving malnutrition among adolescents around the world and the quality of foods eaten by adolescents not only determines their health and development, but also is the foundation of thriving communities. The present study aimed to engage adolescents across low-income, middle-income and high-income countries to determine their lived experience of food, food systems and the challenges they face within their food systems.

Clinical Findings and Radiological Evaluation of WHO-Defined Severe Pneumonia Among Hospitalized Children.

Background: The leading infectious cause of death in children worldwide is pneumonia. Pneumonia claimed the lives of 740,180 kids under the age of five in 2019, accounting for 14% of all fatalities and 22% of deaths in kids between the ages of 1 and 5. Children and families worldwide are affected by pneumonia, but South Asia and Africa have the highest fatality rates.

The Role of Online Social Identity in the Relationship Between Alcohol-Related Content on Social Networking Sites and Adolescent Alcohol Use.

Social networking sites (SNSs) are social platforms that facilitate communication. For adolescents, peers play a crucial role in constructing the self online through displays of group norms on SNSs. The current study investigated the role of online social identity (OSI) in the relationship between adolescent exposure to alcohol-related content posted by peers on SNSs and alcohol use.

11Beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase-1 (11beta-HSD-1) plays a key role in the regulation of intracellular glucocorticoid concentrations. Increased message and/or activity of adipose 11beta-HSD-1 are characteristics of human and animal models of obesity. Hexose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (H6PDH) is colocalized with 11beta-HSD-1 and may be a critical factor in determining the oxo-reductase activity of 11beta-HSD-1.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the chemoprotective activity of anthocyanin-rich extracts (AREs) from bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.), chokeberry (Aronia meloncarpa E.), and grape (Vitis vinifera) by assessing multiple biomarkers of colon cancer in male rats treated with a colon carcinogen, azoxymethane.

Anthocyanins are polyphenols responsible for most red to purple colors in plants. Human consumption of these pigments is increasing because of their potential health benefits and use as natural colorants. With more than 600 different anthocyanins found in nature, the impact of chemical structure on their absorption and metabolism needs to be investigated.

Algorithms for sequence analysis via mutagenesis.

Motivation: Despite many successes of conventional DNA sequencing methods, some DNAs remain difficult or impossible to sequence. Unsequenceable regions occur in the genomes of many biologically important organisms, including the human genome. Such regions range in length from tens to millions of bases, and may contain valuable information such as the sequences of important genes.

Unlocking hidden genomic sequence.

Despite the success of conventional Sanger sequencing, significant regions of many genomes still present major obstacles to sequencing. Here we propose a novel approach with the potential to alleviate a wide range of sequencing difficulties. The technique involves extracting target DNA sequence from variants generated by introduction of random mutations.

A simulated annealing algorithm for finding consensus sequences.

Motivation: A consensus sequence for a family of related sequences is, as the name suggests, a sequence that captures the features common to most members of the family. Consensus sequences are important in various DNA sequencing applications and are a convenient way to characterize a family of molecules.

Results: This paper describes a new algorithm for finding a consensus sequence, using the popular optimization method known as simulated annealing.

Prospective hospital-based survey of attitudes of Southern women toward surgical treatment of breast cancer.

Background: Breast-conserving surgery is equivalent to total mastectomy in the treatment of breast cancer. The Southern part of the United States has a low rate of breast conservation.

Methods: We surveyed 300 women: 100 hospital personnel, 100 cancer clinic patients, and 100 non-cancer clinic patients.

Daylight time-resolved photographs of lightning.

Lightning dart leaders and return strokes have been recorded in daylight with both good spatial resolution and good time resolution as part of the Thunder-storm Research International Program.
