Population genetic structure of endemic and endangered yellow catfish, Horabagrus brachysoma, using allozyme markers.

The allozyme variation and population genetic structure of Horabagrus brachysoma in three natural populations from the southern part of the Western Ghats region, India, were investigated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Variations at 14 loci from 14 enzyme systems were analyzed. The allozyme analysis revealed a high level of genetic variation in this species, with an average of observed alleles per locus of 2.

Extraction of cadmium and tolerance of three annual cut flowers on Cd-contaminated soils.

To evaluate the production potential and Cd removal by three flower crops, viz.: marigold (Tagetes erecta), chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum indicum) and gladiolus (Gladiolus grandiflorus), an experiment was conducted on differentially contaminated soils (DTPA-Cd 0.6-68.

Effect of fly ash inhalation on biochemical and histomorphological changes in rat liver.

The effect of fly ash inhalation (4h daily, 5 days a week) for 28 days on the deposition of metal ions and histopathological changes in the liver and serum clinical enzymes has been studied. The results showed an increase in the concentration of metals such as cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), and lead (Pb) in the tissues of exposed rats. The level of metals varied from metal to metal and from organ to organ.

Use of stereolithographic templates for surgical and prosthodontic implant planning and placement. Part II. A clinical report.

Eight implants were placed in the posterior part of the mandible using computer-generated stereolithographic templates. Preoperative implant simulation was done on a 3D computer model created by reformatted computerized tomography data. The surgeon and the prosthodontist positioned the simulated implants in the most favorable position addressing all concerns with regard to anatomy, biomechanics, and esthetics.

Surgical and prosthodontic implant complications are often an inadvertent sequelae of improper diagnosis, planning, and placement. These complications pose a significant challenge in implant dentistry. Presented in this article is a technique using a highly advanced software program along with a rapid prototyping technology called stereolithography.

Main and accessory renal arteries--a morphological study.

The present work was undertaken to document the incidence of accessory renal arteries in kidney specimens obtained from subjects of Indian origin. Comprehensive dissection carried out in the dissection hall of Anatomy Department of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (India) on forty cadavers over a period of five years revealed a single main renal artery on either side in 80% of the specimens. The mean length of the main renal artery was 31.

Effect of solar UV radiation on earthworm (Metaphire posthuma).

Human health risks like damage to the eyes, immune system, and skin are known to be associated with increasing ultraviolet radiation (UVR) in the environment. In this study, we evaluated the phototoxic effects of UVR in sunlight and its possible mechanism of action by using earthworm as an alternative model because earthworm skin contains several biomolecules (tetraene and triene sterol) similar to human beings. We studied the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), photooxidation of lipids, and histopathological changes in earthworm integument.

Identification of a very large Rab GTPase family in the parasitic protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis.

Rab proteins are pivotal components of the membrane trafficking machinery in all eukaryotes. Distinct Rab proteins locate to specific endomembrane compartments and genomic studies suggest that Rab gene diversity correlates with endomembrane system complexity; for example unicellular organisms generally possess 5-20 Rab family members and the size of the repertoire increases to 25-60 in multicellular systems. Here we report 65 open reading frames from the unicellular protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis that encode distinct Rab proteins (TvRabs), indicating a family with complexity that rivals Homo sapiens in number.

Characterisation of blood coagulation factor XI T475I.

PCR-SSCP and DNA sequence analysis of a factor XI (FXI) deficient patient (FXI:C 39 U/dL; FXI:Ag 27 U/dL) identified a C to T transition in exon 12 of the FXI gene (F11 c.1521C>T) that predicts the substitution of Thr475 by Ile (FXI T475I) within the serine protease domain of FXI. This mutation destroys a consensus sequence for N-linked glycosylation, N473-Y-T475, known to be utilized in vivo.

Proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokine balance and associated changes in pulmonary bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of unleaded gasoline exhaust (GE) exposed mice were investigated. Animals were exposed to GE (1 L/min of GE mixed with 14 L/min of compressed air) using a flow-past, nose-only, dynamic inhalation exposure chamber for different durations (7, 14, and 21 days). The particulate content of the GE was found to be 0.

Hepatotoxic alterations induced by subchronic exposure of rats to formulated fenvalerate (20% EC) by nose only inhalation.

Objective: Fenvalerate (20% EC) is a synthetic pyrethroid, which is commonly used in India by farmers for the protection of many food and vegetable crops against a wide variety of insects. However, its inhalation toxicity data is very limited in the literature due to the fact that the exposure levels associated with these effects were usually not reported. Hence, inhalation exposure was carried out to investigate the hepatotoxic effects.

Effect of respirable fly ash particles inhalation on lungs of rats was investigated by exposing them to respirable aerosols of size classified power plant fly ash at average concentrations of up to 14.4 +/- 1.77 mg/m3 for 4 hr/day for 28 consecutive days.

Better mental health care for older people in India.

Demographic aging will soon lead to a sudden increase in the number of older people with dementia and depression in India. We need to develop services to meet the mental health needs of the aged in the population. Geriatric Psychiatry section of IPS has initiated a process of consultations to address this emerging public health issue.

Spent ion exchange resin-its treatment from the point of view of safe disposal.

Ion exchange process is one of the treatment methods for radioactive waste. The resin becomes no longer useful after number of cycles of usage. At the same time the regenerated resin cannot be considered as non active waste for disposal.

Biochemical and genetic evidence for a family of heterotrimeric G-proteins in Trichomonas vaginalis.

We have cloned a single copy gene from the human parasite Trichomonas vaginalis that encodes a putative protein of 402 amino acids with approximately 35% sequence identity to known alpha subunits of heterotrimeric G-proteins. It contains the characteristic GTP binding domains G-1 to G-5 with the key residues conserved. The new sequence has an unusual N-terminal extension of approximately 70 residues that cannot be aligned to reference G-proteins and which is characterised by proline-rich repeats.

Molecular evolution of the vertebrate blood coagulation network.

In mammalian blood coagulation 5 proteases, factor VII (FVII), factor IX (FIX), factor X (FX), protein C (PC) and prothrombin act with two cofactors factor V and factor VIII to control the generation of fibrin. Biochemical evidence and molecular cloning data have previously indicated that blood coagulation involving tissue factor, prothrombin and fibrinogen is present in all vertebrates. Using degenerate RT-PCR we have isolated and characterized novel cDNAs with sequence identity to the blood coagulation serine proteases and cofactors from chicken and the puffer fish (Fugu rubripes).

Silica induced early fibrogenic reaction in lung of mice ameliorated by Nyctanthes arbortristis extract.

Objective: To investigate the pharmacological effect of Nyctanthes arbortristis (NAT) leaf extract in the prevention of lung injury induced by silica particles.

Method: Lung injury was induced in Swiss mice through inhalation exposure to silica particles (< 5 mu) using a Flow Past Nose Only Inhalation Chamber at the rate of -10 mg/m3 respirable mass for 5 h. Lung bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid collected between 48 and 72 h was subjected to protein profiling by electrophoresis and cytokine evaluation by solid phase sandwich ELISA.

Caregivers of people with Alzheimer's disease: a qualitative study from the Indian 10/66 Dementia Research Network.

Background: Dementia is a rapidly growing problem in all parts of the developing world. Such societies are characterised by low levels of awareness regarding dementia as a chronic degenerative brain syndrome, and by an absence of supportive health and welfare services. There is reliance upon families as the cornerstone of support and care.

Differential pulse polarographic determination of uranium(VI) in complex materials after adsorption of its trifluoroethylxanthate cetyltrimethylammonium ion-associated complex on naphthalene adsorbent.

Uranium(VI) is adsorbed as a uranium trifluoroethylxanthate (TFEX)-cetyltrimethylammonium (CTMA) ion-pair complex on microcrystalline naphthalene quantitatively in the pH range 4.2 - 7.0.

Revealing a hidden problem. An evaluation of a community dementia case-finding program from the Indian 10/66 dementia research network.

Background: Dementia in India is largely a hidden problem with no community awareness and little help seeking from affected families, despite high levels of strain. Cases must therefore be identified before practical help can be offered.

Method: After two and a half hours of formal training, local community health workers in rural Kerala were asked to identify possible cases of dementia from the community they served.

Hypertension, calcium channel and pyridoxine (vitamin B6).

The moderately pyridoxine (vitamin B6)-deficient male rat was introduced by us as an animal model (B6DHT) for the study of hypertension. Hypertension in this rat is associated with increased sympathetic stimulation. Arterial segments from B6DHT rats maintained a higher resting tone.

Cortical deafness following head injury -a case report.

Cortical deafness is a rare entity. Only few case reports are available. In this paper, a case of right fronto-temporal contusion following head injury causing bilateral cortical deafness has been reported.

Bera in normal neonates and infants: (Some observations on maturation of auditory pathways).

This study includes eight normal, not at-risk for deafness, neonates and infants of age ranging from 2 days to 1 year. BERA was done at 2 kHz. frequency at 80 dB intensity.
