The perioperative management of post-craniotomy pain is controversial. Although the concept of pain control in non-neurosurgical fields has grown substantially, the understanding of neurosurgical pain and its causative factors in such a population is inconclusive. In fact, the organ that is the center of pain and its related mechanisms receives little attention to alleviate distress during neurosurgical procedures.

The use of functional stereotactic neurosurgery is increasing for treatment of patients with movement disorders and other chronic illnesses. The anesthetic considerations include the influence of the anesthetic agents on the microelectrode recordings and stimulation testing of an awake patient. The purpose of this study was to review the anesthetic management and incidences of intraoperative complications during functional neurosurgery in our institution.

Synopsis of recent research by authors named "Lakshmi Venkatraghavan"

  • - Lakshmi Venkatraghavan's research primarily investigates the complexities surrounding pain management in neurosurgical settings, highlighting the need for improved understanding and strategies when addressing post-craniotomy pain.
  • - A key finding from her work suggests that while perioperative pain management is well-established in non-neurosurgical fields, it remains underexplored within neurosurgery, indicating a gap in current medical practices.
  • - Additionally, Venkatraghavan has examined the anesthetic considerations specific to functional neurosurgery, emphasizing the significance of monitoring intraoperative complications and the effects of anesthetic agents on patient outcomes during procedures.
