Background/purpose: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) with ACURATE neo2 showed better hemodynamic outcomes by mitigating paravalvular leakage (PVL) compared with ACURATE neo, and revealed promising one-year outcomes in single-arm studies. However, studies comparing the hemodynamic and clinical outcomes of the two valves are still scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the one-year hemodynamic and clinical outcomes between the neo2 and neo.

Word fluency (WF) tasks that tap verbal and executive function show deteriorating performance by advancing age. To address the scarcely studied age-related brain correlates of WF, we employed whole-brain voxel-based morphometry to examine gray matter (GM) correlates of semantic and phonemic WF in 46 healthy older adults. Lower phonemic WF score was related to smaller anterior medial temporal GM volume as well as smaller GM volume in the putamen bilaterally.

Objective: The objective was to develop a manually operatable, non-electric device to measure salivary spinnbarkeit for research, clinical and educational purposes.

Materials And Methods: A newly developed device, named the Kamranmeter, was built and evaluated in a pilot study, comparing the spinnbarkeit of unstimulated and chew-stimulated saliva samples from healthy volunteers. The Neva Meter, which operates on electrical resistance, was used as a reference standard.

Objective: Temporal fluctuations of attention detected with strictly controlled neuropsychological tests is an important objective behavioral marker for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study examined whether intraindividual variability in response latencies is also detectable in more realistic open-ended virtual contexts where the participants can freely interact with the surroundings when performing instructed everyday tasks from memory.

Method: Three ex-Gaussian parameters, μ, σ, and τ, were derived from response latencies in 2 tasks obtained from 2 datasets comprising 9- to 13-year-old children (72 with ADHD and 71 typically developing controls).

Background: Working memory (WM) deficits are among the most prominent cognitive impairments in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). While functional connectivity is a prevailing approach in brain imaging of ADHD, alterations in WM-related functional brain networks and their malleability by cognitive training are not well known. We examined whole-brain functional connectivity differences between adults with and without ADHD during n-back WM tasks and rest at pretest, as well as the effects of WM training on functional and structural brain connectivity in the ADHD group.

Article Synopsis
  • Evidence of Antarctic ozone recovery has been observed, but Arctic ozone recovery remains uncertain 25 years after the peak of ozone-depleting substances.
  • A Dynamic Linear Model was used to analyze data from ozonesondes over 20-year periods (1994-2022), revealing no detectable recovery in lower Arctic stratospheric ozone.
  • Significant positive trends were found before 2017 at some measurement stations, but trends since 2019 have been notably negative, underscoring the need for ongoing monitoring of Arctic ozone levels.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how parental cognitive abilities (executive functioning) and emotional processing difficulties (alexithymic traits) affect the emotional quality of parent-child relationships (emotional availability).
  • Researchers measured these factors in 119 mothers with young children, finding that higher alexithymic traits were linked to poorer caregiving abilities.
  • The results suggest that parents with lower cognitive executive functioning may struggle more with emotional availability, indicating the need for further research into the interaction between these traits.

Objective: This study aimed to assess whether exposure to hyperglycemia influences prescription medicine purchases in the offspring of women with type 1 diabetes (exposed offspring).

Patients/materials And Methods: We identified all singleton exposed offspring born in the hospital district of Helsinki and Uusimaa, Finland, between 1988 and 2011 from the Finnish Medical Birth Register, maintained by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare. For each exposed offspring, we obtained five age- and province-matched offspring of women without diabetes (reference offspring), from the Finnish Medical Birth Register.

Article Synopsis
  • - Pavlovian fear conditioning research has primarily focused on male rodents and the freezing response, but new findings reveal that female rodents exhibit a different response called "darting," characterized by rapid escape movements.
  • - Darting females (Darters) show less freezing than males and Non-darters, and they move faster when exposed to foot shocks, raising questions about the underlying mechanisms of these responses.
  • - Further investigation showed that Darters are not more sensitive to aversive stimuli compared to Non-darters and males; instead, they might be less reactive in certain cases, highlighting the need to consider individual responses in fear conditioning studies.

Background And Aims: In 2006, screening of 65-year-old men for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) was started in Sweden. Decline in aneurysm-related mortality has been reported since, but aneurysm incidence has been diminishing globally. Neighbouring Finland with similar population structure and health care system has no AAA screening programme.

In periodontitis, gingival fibroblasts (GF) appear to produce a multitude of paracrine factors. However, the influence of GF-derived soluble factors on osteoclastogenesis remains unclear. In this case study, production of paracrine factors by GF was assessed under inflammatory and non-inflammatory conditions, as well as their effect on osteoclastogenesis.

Pavlovian fear conditioning is a widely used tool that models associative learning in rodents. For decades the field has used predominantly male rodents and focused on a sole conditioned fear response: freezing. However, recent work from our lab and others has identified darting as a female-biased conditioned response, characterized by an escape-like movement across a fear conditioning chamber.

Measurement of cognitive functions is typically based on the implicit assumption that the mental architecture underlying cognitive task performance is constant throughout the task. In contrast, skill learning theory implies that cognitively demanding task performance is an adaptive process that progresses from initial heavy engagement of effortful and task-general metacognitive and executive control processes towards more automatic and task-specific performance. However, this hypothesis is rarely applied to the short time spans of traditional cognitive tasks such as working memory (WM) tasks.
