Background: The influence of Vitreomacular Interface Abnormalities (VMIA) such as Epiretinal Membrane (ERM) and/or vitreomacular traction (VMT) on the response of patients with Centre Involving Diabetic Macular Edema (CIDME) to standard of care Anti-VEGF medications is under-researched. The aims of this study were: 1) To determine the incidence of VMIA at baseline and 12 months amongst treatment naive patients commencing anti-VEGF treatment 2) To compare the response to Anti-VEGF medications at 3 monthly intervals for 12 months in a large cohort of patients with and without VMIA on their baseline OCT scan. Response was determined in terms of: number of injections, central macular thickness and visual acuity.

This work reports how text size and other rendering conditions affect reading speeds in a virtual reality environment and a scientific data analysis application. Displaying text legibly yet space-efficiently is a challenging problem in immersive displays. Effective text displays that enable users to read at their maximum speed must consider the variety of virtual reality (VR) display hardware and possible visual exploration tasks.

Design: Cohort study of routinely collected data from the European Society of Retina Specialists and British and Eire Association of Vitreoretinal Surgeons vitreoretinal database between 2015 and 2022.
Participants: All consecutive eyes that underwent primary rhegmatogenous RD surgery using Densiron 68 or light silicone oil as an internal tamponade agent.
We present a graph neural network (GNN)-based framework applied to large-scale microscopy image segmentation tasks. While deep learning models, like convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have become common for automating image segmentation tasks, they are limited by the image size that can fit in the memory of computational hardware. In a GNN framework, large-scale images are converted into graphs using superpixels (regions of pixels with similar color/intensity values), allowing us to input information from the entire image into the model.

Real-world evidence (RWE) methods were employed to compare the safety and efficacy of non-myeloablative conditioning with FCR001 with standard of care [SOC] immunosuppression in a retrospective single-center analysis of outcomes among propensity score matched living-donor KTx receiving SOC (n = 144) or FCR001 (n = 36). Among the FCR001 recipients, 26 (72%) developed persistent chimerism allowing durable elimination of all immunosuppression.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data, using a database of RD treated with vitrectomy and internal tamponade. Collected data complied with the RCOphth Retinal Detachment Dataset.
Background: Infective endocarditis can progress to an intracardiac abscess in 20% to 30% of cases, with interventricular septal abscess (IVSA) being one of the rare complications usually presenting with sepsis. We present a case of IVSA presenting with a new-onset second-degree heart block, which rapidly progressed to a complete heart block.
Case Presentation: A 80-year-old Caucasian female with a past medical history of hypertension and hyperlipidemia presented with exertional chest pain, lightheadedness, and shortness of breath with telemetry and electrocardiogram revealing persistent Mobitz type II second degree atrioventricular block.
Background: To assess the effect of sex and laterality on clinical features of primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD).
Method: This study is a retrospective analysis of data prospectively collected. We extracted data from two online datasets over a 7-year period of patients older than 16 years who had undergone surgery for primary RRD.
Introduction: Postoperative steroid/antibiotic drop regimens are known to effectively suppress inflammation and infection following pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), but the steroid frequently induces ocular hypertension (OHT). The aim of this contemporaneous cohort-control study was to assess safety and efficacy of a novel post-PPV drop regimen conceived to address this problem.
Methods: Electronic case notes of consecutive eyes undergoing PPV between December 2020 and April 2021 at St.
Background: Cryoballoon ablation (CBA) is recommended for patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) refractory to antiarrhythmic drugs. However, only 80% of patients benefit from initial CBA. There is growing evidence that pretreatment with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) decreases the recurrence of AF postablation, particularly in nonparoxysmal AF undergoing radiofrequency ablation.

Methods: A multi-centre, retrospective, observational study. Pre-emptive vitrectomy was performed in non-fibrotic diabetic eyes with a visual acuity (VA) of 20/50 or better, where there was extensive persistent neovascularisation despite prior panretinal photocoagulation, and where the fellow eye had established sight loss despite vitrectomy for tractional complications.

Immersive visualization in virtual reality (VR) allows us to exploit visual cues for perception in 3D space, yet few existing studies have measured the effects of visual cues. Across a desktop monitor and a head-mounted display (HMD), we assessed scatterplot designs which vary their use of visual cues-motion, shading, perspective (graphical projection), and dimensionality-on two sets of data. We conducted a user study with a summary task in which 32 participants estimated the classification accuracy of an artificial neural network from the scatterplots.

Methods: We used ICD-10 codes to retrospectively identify patients with a primary diagnosis of TCM in the National Inpatient Sample database 2016-2018.
Whilst pre- and postoperative multimodal imaging technologies including optical coherence tomography (OCT) have investigated the morphological correlates of worsened visual outcomes in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) with foveal involvement, the nomenclature has adhered to the traditional ophthalmoscopy-based and rather vague term "macula-off". This article appraises the current literature with regard to the preoperative assessment and nomenclature of the foveal status in macula involving retinal detachment (MIRD). A literature review of recent publications assessing functional or morphological outcomes in MIRD was conducted, using the search terms "fovea-off" or "macula-off".

Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of a prospectively collected dataset. Data regarding adult patients (aged 16-100 years) who had undergone primary RRD repair, were extracted from two online databases.
Future spacecraft missions aim to communicate with the Earth using near-infrared lasers. The possible bit rate of free-space optical communication (FSOC) is orders of magnitude greater when compared to current radio frequency transmissions. The challenge of ground-space FSOC is that atmospheric turbulence perturbs optical wavefront propagation.

Modern imaging approaches such as computed tomography, laser scanning, and photogrammetry have opened up a new digital world, enabling researchers to share and analyze morphological data electronically and in great detail. Because this digital data exists on a computer screen, however, it can remain difficult to understand and unintuitive to interact with.

However, initial CBA is successful in only 70-80% of patients. The role of an atypical left common PV (LCPV) and PV anatomical indices on CBA outcomes remains unclear.

We propose a novel approach for processing diffusion MRI tractography datasets using the sparse closest point transform (SCPT). Tractography enables the 3D geometry of white matter pathways to be reconstructed; however, algorithms for processing them are often highly customized, and thus, do not leverage the existing wealth of machine learning (ML) algorithms. We investigated a vector-space tractography representation that aims to bridge this gap by using the SCPT, which consists of two steps: first, extracting sparse and representative landmarks from a tractography dataset, and second transforming curves relative to these landmarks with a closest point transform.

We present exploratory research of virtual reality techniques and mnemonic devices to assist in retrieving knowledge from scholarly articles. We used abstracts of scientific publications to represent knowledge in scholarly articles; participants were asked to read, remember, and retrieve knowledge from a set of abstracts. We conducted an experiment to compare participants' recall and recognition performance in three different conditions: a control condition without a pre-specified strategy to test baseline individual memory ability, a condition using an image-based variant of a mnemonic called a "memory palace," and a condition using a virtual reality-based variant of a memory palace.
