Article Synopsis
  • Hypereosinophilic syndrome can affect the heart and is often linked to poor outcomes, but there's limited data on its impact on Latin American migrants with eosinophilia from parasitic infections.
  • A study was conducted with individuals from Latin America, comparing those with eosinophilia and helminth infections to those without, using echocardiography and microbiological tests for diagnosis.
  • Results showed that participants with eosinophilia had significant echocardiographic changes, like increased heart wall thickness and altered heart function, suggesting early signs of heart dysfunction potentially due to eosinophilia-related effects.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and survival outcomes of a multidisciplinary extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) program at a university hospital in Spain over a four-year period.
  • The research analyzed data from 54 adult patients who received ECPR, noting that 16 patients (29.6%) were alive after 180 days, with 15 showing good neurological outcomes.
  • The results suggest that implementing an ECPR program is practical and can result in favorable survival rates and potential organ donation opportunities in a specialized medical center.

Introduction And Objectives: Dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) duration after ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) remains a matter of debate.

Methods: We analyzed the effect of DAPT on 5-year all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, and cardiovascular readmission or mortality in a cohort of 1-year survivor STEMI patients.

Results: A total of 3107 patients with the diagnosis of STEMI were included: 93% of them were discharged on DAPT, a therapy that persisted in 275 high-risk patients at 5 years.

In patients with a first anterior ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention, iron deficiency (ID) was associated with larger infarcts, more extensive microvascular obstruction, and higher frequency of adverse left ventricular remodeling as assessed by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. In mice, an ID diet reduced the activity of the endothelial nitric oxide synthase/soluble guanylate cyclase/protein kinase G pathway in association with oxidative/nitrosative stress and increased infarct size after transient coronary occlusion. Iron supplementation or administration of an sGC activator before ischemia prevented the effects of the ID diet in mice.

Background: Aortic branch aneurysms are not included in the diagnostic criteria for Marfan syndrome (MFS); however, their prevalence and eventual prognostic significance are unknown.

Objectives: The goal of this study was to assess the prevalence of aortic branch aneurysms in MFS and their relationship with aortic prognosis.

Methods: MFS patients with a pathogenic FBN1 genetic variant and at least one magnetic resonance or computed tomography angiography study assessing aortic branches were included.

Introduction And Objectives: Optimal lipid control is difficult to attain. We assessed preadmission achievement of the European Society of Cardiology targets for low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) control in patients admitted for acute coronary syndrome.

Methods: Fasting LDL-C levels were measured in 3164 patients admitted between 2010 and 2017.

Introduction And Objectives: Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) is a prognostic marker in out-of-hospital cardiopulmonary arrest (OHCA) survivors treated with mild therapeutic hypothermia (MTH). The objectives were to analyze the correlation between dynamic changes in NSE and outcomes and to determine the measurement timing that best predicts neurological status.

Methods: Multicenter cohort study including patients admitted after shockable rhythm OHCA and treated with MTH.
