Gliflozins are known as SGLT2 inhibitors, which are used to treat diabetic patients by inhibiting glucose reabsorption in kidney proximal tubules. Recent studies show that gliflozins may exert other effects independent of SGLT2 pathways. In this study we investigated their effects on skeletal muscle cell viability and paracrine function, which were crucial for promoting revascularization in diabetic hindlimb ischemia (HLI).

Article Synopsis
  • - Diabetes mellitus leads to severe complications due to macrovascular and microvascular changes, making patients vulnerable to hindlimb ischemia (HLI), which currently has no cure.
  • - The study explores the effects of sotagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor, on promoting therapeutic angiogenesis in diabetic HLI through enhanced production of angiogenic factors like HIF-1α, VEGF-A, and PDGF-BB in skeletal muscle cells.
  • - In tests with diabetic mice, injecting sotagliflozin into the muscle after artery excision resulted in the formation of new functional blood vessels, indicating potential benefits for treating HLI.
