• Thyroid angiosarcoma is a very rare malignancy that is mostly seen in elderly of Alpine regions, related to high prevalence of iodine deficient goiter. • It is a very aggressive tumor that can rapidly spread to the cervical lymph nodes, lungs, and brain or can metastasize to the duodenum, small bowel and large bowel. • Metastatic disease is associated with poor prognosis and limits the mean survival time to a few months after diagnosis and surgical treatment.

Introduction/background: Urinary incontinence is common in children with neuropathic bladder. Results of endoscopic injections of bulking agents in the bladder neck are promising but it remains unclear whether they should be performed an antegrade or retrograde fashion.

Objective: Our aim was to compare the antegrade and retrograde endoscopic injection techniques for the treatment of urinary incontinence.

Background: Repairing bone defects generated by craniectomy is a major therapeutic challenge in terms of bone consolidation as well as functional and cognitive recovery. Furthermore, these surgical procedures are often grafted with complications such as infections, breaches, displacements and rejections leading to failure and thus explantation of the prosthesis.

Objective: To evaluate cumulative explantation and infection rates following the implantation of a tailored cranioplasty CUSTOMBONE prosthesis made of porous hydroxyapatite.

Ann Burns Fire Disasters

December 2015

Hand burns in children are common and may lead to debilitating sequelae. Therefore, full functional restoration of the hand is the goal of treatment. To assess the epidemiological, clinical and development aspects of the burns, we conducted a retrospective study over 4 years, from January 2011 to January 2015.

Surface electromyography (sEMG) has been the predominant method for sensing electrical activity for a number of applications involving muscle-computer interfaces, including myoelectric control of prostheses and rehabilitation robots. Ultrasound imaging for sensing mechanical deformation of functional muscle compartments can overcome several limitations of sEMG, including the inability to differentiate between deep contiguous muscle compartments, low signal-to-noise ratio, and lack of a robust graded signal. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of real-time graded control using a computationally efficient method to differentiate between complex hand motions based on ultrasound imaging of forearm muscles.

We describe a case of a 32-year-old man with a giant pseudomeningocele seen on MRI examination 6 months after spinal surgery. Radionuclide SPECT/CT cisternography performed after intrathecal suboccipital injection of In-DTPA identified the site of cerebral spinal fluid leak at the L4 level, and the patient underwent surgical correction of the dural defect. A repeat MRI examination 8 months later showed no signs of recurrence.

Joint manifestations in scleroderma (Scl) and polymyositis (PM) are dominated by inflammatory arthralgia. Arthritis is less common and preferentially affects the hands, wrists, knees, and ankles. Involvement of the hip has been rarely reported in the literature.

An experiment was conducted to examine whether increased CLA in milk of dairy cows fed fresh pasture compared with alfalfa and corn silages was because of ruminal or endogenous synthesis. Eight Holsteins were fed a total mixed ration using alfalfa and corn silages as the forage source in confinement or grazed in a replicated crossover design. The proportion of total fatty acids as CLA (primarily c9, t11-18:2) in g/100 g was 0.

Cystic malignant pheochromocytomas are uncommon. Differing from solid pheochromocytomas, which produce catecholamines and present adrenergic syndrome, cystic pheochromocytomas, may not produce these. Preoperative diagnosis may be difficult.

Liposarcomas are common soft tissue of the retroperitoneum and the limbs. They are rarely found in the greater omentum. Once in the peritoneum, these can become enormous and can be mistaken for ovarian mass.

Background: To evaluate the role of surgery and postoperative radiotherapy in the management of brain metastases (BM): a retrospective analysis for overall survival (OS), local and brain control (LC and BC) of a series of 329 patients with recursive partitioning analysis (RPA) I or II with 1 or 2 BM in a single institution.

Methods: Patients were treated either with combined surgical resection and whole brain radiation therapy (WBRT) in 104 cases (31.6%) or with WBRT alone in 225 cases (68.

Amiodarone chlorhydrate is a diiodated benzofuran derivative used to treat cardiac rhythm abnormalities. Hepatotoxicity is a relatively uncommon side effect of amiodarone and symptomatic hepatic dysfunction occurs in less than 1% to 3% of patients taking amiodarone. We report here on an unusual case of amiodarone-induced hepatotoxicity.

Background: Acquired ichthyosis is a rare condition that can reveal an unsuspected haematological malignancy, thus allowing early diagnosis and management. If ichthyosis regresses under treatment for the haematological disorder, its recurrence reflects a turning point in the course of the disease and implies worsening of the prognosis.

Patients And Methods: The patients were examined at a joint dermatology/haematology consultation.

Tumoral calcinosis is an uncommon and severe complication of hemodialysis therapy. The most important pathogenic factor involved in uremic tumoral calcinosis is an increase in calcium-phosphorus product, not necessarily related to hyperparathyroidism. We report here a patient on hemodialysis who presented with increasing multifocal and uncommon sites of massive calcifications.

Desmoids tumors are rare. They often develop from the fascia and muscles of the abdominal wall. They are considered as benign, but endowed with local aggressiveness.

Thrombosis of the inferior vena cava is a rare clinical expression of primary antiphospholipid syndrome. This case clearly illustrates the clinical manifestations, work-up findings and management principles of thrombosis of the inferior vena cava in primary antiphospholipid syndrome before the stage of complication. The patient was a 24-year-old female with a history of recurrent deep venous thrombosis.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate results of surgical management for sternal metastasis from differentiated thyroid carcinoma.

Methods: A retrospective study has been completed on patients treated in our department for sternal metastasis from differentiated thyroid carcinoma.

Results: Among the 235 patients who underwent thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer, seven (3%) had sternal metastasis during follow-up.

Objective: To evaluate the incidence of thyroid carcinoma in patients operated on for Graves' disease, to identify criteria which may predict malignancy, and to develop a practical approach to determine the extensiveness of thyroidectomy.

Patients And Methods: Retrospective study of all patients who underwent thyroidectomy for Graves' disease between 1995 and 2005.

Results: 547 patients underwent subtotal thyroidectomy for Graves' disease during this period.
