The magnetic field range in which a magnetic sensor operates is an important consideration for many applications. Elliptical planar Hall effect (EPHE) sensors exhibit outstanding equivalent magnetic noise (EMN) on the order of pT/Hz, which makes them promising for many applications. Unfortunately, the current field range in which EPHE sensors with pT/Hz EMN can operate is sub-mT, which limits their potential use.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic raised novel challenges in communicating reliable, continually changing health information to a broad and sometimes skeptical public, particularly around COVID-19 vaccines, which, despite being comprehensively studied, were the subject of viral misinformation. Chatbots are a promising technology to reach and engage populations during the pandemic. To inform and communicate effectively with users, chatbots must be highly usable and credible.

Background: Automated conversational agents, or chatbots, have a role in reinforcing evidence-based guidance delivered through other media and offer an accessible, individually tailored channel for public engagement. In early-to-mid 2021, young adults and minority populations disproportionately affected by COVID-19 in the United States were more likely to be hesitant toward COVID-19 vaccines, citing concerns regarding vaccine safety and effectiveness. Golgi mannosidase II (GMII) catalyzes the sequential hydrolysis of two mannosyl residues from GlcNAcManGlcNAc to produce GlcNAcManGlcNAc, the precursor for all complex -glycans, including the branched -glycans associated with cancer. Inhibitors of GMII are potential cancer therapeutics, but their usefulness is limited by off-target effects, which produce α-mannosidosis-like symptoms. Despite many structural and mechanistic studies of GMII, we still lack a potent and selective inhibitor of this enzyme.

A Fluorescence Polarization Activity-Based Protein Profiling Assay in the Discovery of Potent, Selective Inhibitors for Human Nonlysosomal Glucosylceramidase.

Human nonlysosomal glucosylceramidase (GBA2) is one of several enzymes that controls levels of glycolipids and whose activity is linked to several human disease states. There is a major need to design or discover selective GBA2 inhibitors both as chemical tools and as potential therapeutic agents. Here, we describe the development of a fluorescence polarization activity-based protein profiling (FluoPol-ABPP) assay for the rapid identification, from a 350+ library of iminosugars, of GBA2 inhibitors.

Microalbuminuria (MA) is a known marker for endothelial dysfunction and future cardiovascular events. Exercise-induced albuminuria (EiA) may precede the appearance of MA. Associations between EiA and metabolic syndrome (MS) have not been assessed so far.

Lysosomal glycosphingolipid catabolism by acid ceramidase: formation of glycosphingoid bases during deficiency of glycosidases.

Glycosphingoid bases are elevated in inherited lysosomal storage disorders with deficient activity of glycosphingolipid catabolizing glycosidases. We investigated the molecular basis of the formation of glucosylsphingosine and globotriaosylsphingosine during deficiency of glucocerebrosidase (Gaucher disease) and α-galactosidase A (Fabry disease). Independent genetic and pharmacological evidence is presented pointing to an active role of acid ceramidase in both processes through deacylation of lysosomal glycosphingolipids.

Is an exercise tolerance test indicated before beginning regular exercise? A decision analysis.

Background And Objective: The present study, using a decision analysis, evaluates whether an exercise tolerance test (ETT) is indicated before initiating regular physical activity to reduce the risk of sudden death during exercise training.

Design: The study encompasses a decision tree, Monte Carlo simulation, and utility analysis for adults at low to high risk for coronary disease, with a time horizon of five years, with or without routine ETT screening before initiating physical activity.

Measures: Mortality in Monte Carlo simulation; expected values in utility analysis.

A field study aimed to characterize atmospheric pollutants in the gaseous and the particulate phases was conducted during the fall-winter of 2004 and the summer of 2005 in the Ashdod area, Israel. The site is influenced by both anthropogenic sources (power plants, refineries, chemical and metal industries, a cargo port, road traffic) and natural sources (sea-spray and desert dust). Transuterine transmission of Aspergillus terreus in a case of disseminated canine aspergillosis.

Aspergillus terreus was isolated from the organs of a German Shepherd pup removed from the bitch by cesarean intervention. In the following days, the bitch developed signs of canine disseminated aspergillosis and was euthanized. The fungus was isolated from a necrotic lesion in the uterus and other organs.

Transcytosis of Streptococcus iniae through skin epithelial barriers: an in vitro study.

By constructing a biological model based on in vitro culture of polarized rainbow trout primary skin epithelial cell monolayers, the series of early events that precede Streptococcus iniae infection, particularly colonization and translocation through external barriers, were analyzed. Streptococcus iniae promptly invades skin epithelial cells, but the rapid decline of viable intracellular bacteria points out the limited capability of intracellular survival for this bacterium. Translocation assays, supported by electron microscopy microphotographs, demonstrate that following successful in vitro invasion of skin epithelial cell, the bacterium exists free in the cytoplasm after release from the endosome, and translocates through the skin barrier.

Oesophageal sarcomas in dogs: histological and clinical evaluation.

A histological grading system of oesophageal sarcomas has not been established. Thirty-two cases of oesophageal sarcomas have been reviewed for tumour characteristics and clinical outcome. Nineteen dogs underwent surgical intervention to remove oesophageal tumours; ten of them survived (median 278 days).

Experimental infection of common garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis) with West Nile virus.

The role of various reptilian species in the infectious cycle of several arboviruses is documented, but their role in that of West Nile virus (WNV) is uncertain. Common garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis) were infected subcutaneously with 10(5) plaque forming units (PFU) WNV-Isr 98, five of nine snakes became viremic, and five exhibited persistent low levels of neutralizing antibodies. Four of the parentally infected snakes died and high titers of virus were found in multiple organ samples.

Streptococcus iniae type II infections in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss.

Clinical and pathological findings (anorexia, hemorrhage, lethargy, loss of orientation and exophthalmia) indicated that Streptococcus iniae type II is responsible for a fatal disease in rainbow trout. Histopathological findings revealed that S. iniae type II produces a systemic disease, including a diffuse necrotizing myositis.

Determination of atomic structure of the metal-oxide interface: Pd nanodeposits on an FeO(111) film.

Palladium was vapor deposited on a thin FeO(111) film grown on a Pt(111) substrate. Scanning tunneling microscopy study has revealed that Pd wets the FeO substrate and at elevated temperatures forms extended Pd(111) monolayer islands in contrast to other oxide supports previously studied. For the first time, we have imaged the metal-oxide interface structure with atomic resolution and explained the results on the basis of ab initio calculations.

An unusual outbreak of malignant catarrhal fever in a beef herd in Israel.

Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF. corrizza contagiosa) is an invariably fatal communicable disease in cattle, whose causative agent is the ovine herpes virus-2, or the alcelaphine herpes virus-1. In one feed-lot family farm, 34 calves out of 100 became ill at the rate of one to four calves per week, and all of them subsequently died over a period of 4 months.
