Groundwater monitoring is a crucial part of groundwater remediation that produces data from various strategically placed wells to maintain a water quality standard. Using the United States Department of Energy's Hanford 100-HRD area well data, recurrent neural networks are trained in the form of one-dimensional Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) networks, and Dual-stage Attention-based LSTM (DA-LSTM) networks to reduce monitoring costs and increase data sampling responsiveness that is subject to laboratory analysis delays, with the best network being DA-LSTM achieving an R score of 0.82.

Haematological and plasma parameters are used in veterinary medicine as a diagnostic tool, allowing for the early detection of potential health and welfare issues. Borosilicate glasses are widely used for radioactive waste disposal due to their ability to incorporate a variety of contaminants and radionuclides while exhibiting high durability in various disposal scenarios. This research evaluated the dissolution of borosilicate glass using both single-pass-flow-through (ASTM C1662-18) and product consistency test (ASTM C1285-21) methods with different solutions, including a cementitious-contacted water (called grout-contacted, GC, from this point) and solutions with varying levels of dissolved cementitious species such as Si, Ca, Al. The results indicated that the presence of Ca plays a crucial role in suppressing glass corrosion, as evidenced by the slower normalized dissolution rates, which were one order of magnitude lower for boron and two orders of magnitude lower for rhenium, observed in both Ca-amended and GC solutions compared to the pH 12 buffer solution.

The development and application of functional feed ingredients represents a great opportunity to advance fish growth and health, boost the immune system, and induce physiological benefits beyond those provided by traditional feeds. In the present study, we looked at the feasibility of in vitro methods for screening the qualities of functional feed ingredients using the fish cell line RTgill-W1, which has never been used in fish nutrition, and the culture of Paramoeba perurans. Five functional feed ingredients (arginine, β-glucan, vitamin C, and two phytogenic feed additives) were selected to investigate their effects on cell viability and reactive oxygen species production.

Methods: An anonymous survey was sent to all Honduran ophthalmologists with questions on surgical volume, department-level location, type of facility in which they work, surgical methods, and age. Surgical volume, population, and poverty data sourced through the Oxford Poverty Human Development Initiative were mapped at the department level, and cataract surgical rates (CSR; surgeries per million population per year) were calculated and mapped.

Background: The effect of microbial phytase on amino acid and energy digestibility is not consistent in pigs, which may be related to the phytase dosage or the adaptation length to the diet. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to test the hypotheses that increasing dietary phytase after an 18-day adaptation period: 1) increases nutrient and energy digestibility; 2) increases plasma P, plasma inositol, and bone ash of young pigs; and 3) demonstrates that maximum phytate degradation requires more phytase than maximum P digestibility.

The concentration of Ca in plant feed ingredients is low compared with the requirement for pigs and most Ca in diets for pigs is provided by limestone and Ca phosphate. To determine digestibility values for Ca that are additive in mixed diets, the standardized total tract digestibility (STTD) of Ca needs to be calculated, and the STTD of Ca by growing pigs in most Ca-containing ingredients has been reported. Although Ca is an inexpensive nutrient compared with P and amino acids, excess Ca needs to be avoided because excess dietary Ca results in reduced P digestibility, reduced feed intake, and reduced growth performance of pigs.

In this study, we have developed a comprehensive machine learning (ML) framework for long-term groundwater contamination monitoring as the Python package PyLEnM (Python for Long-term Environmental Monitoring). PyLEnM aims to establish the seamless data-to-ML pipeline with various utility functions, such as quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC), coincident/colocated data identification, the automated ingestion and processing of publicly available spatial data layers, and novel data summarization/visualization. The key ML innovations include (1) time series/multianalyte clustering to find the well groups that have similar groundwater dynamics and to inform spatial interpolation and well optimization, (2) the automated model selection and parameter tuning, comparing multiple regression models for spatial interpolation, (3) the proxy-based spatial interpolation method by including spatial data layers or in situ measurable variables as predictors for contaminant concentrations and groundwater levels, and (4) the new well optimization algorithm to identify the most effective subset of wells for maintaining the spatial interpolation ability for long-term monitoring.

Aquaculture feeds have changed dramatically from being largely based on fishmeal (FM) towards increased use of plant protein sources, which could impact the fish's immune response. In order to characterize immunomodulatory properties of novel functional ingredients, this study used four diets, one based on FM, a challenging diet with 40% soybean meal (SBM), and two diets containing 40% SBM with 5% of yeast exposed to different down-stream processing conditions: heat-inactivated (ICJ) or autolysation (ACJ).
