We have recently described a di-hydroxylated compound called protectin DX (PDX) which derives from docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) by double lipoxygenation. PDX exhibits anti-aggregatory and anti-inflammatory properties, that are also exhibited by similar molecules, called poxytrins, which possess the same E,Z,E conjugated triene geometry, and are synthesized from other polyunsaturated fatty acids with 22 or 20 carbons. Here we present new biological activities of di-hydroxylated metabolites deriving from α-linolenic acid (18:3n-3) treated by soybean 15-lipoxygenase (sLOX).

This new nematic phase, predicted by Dozov, is of particular interest because although the constituent molecules are achiral the phase itself is chiral. Here, we describe the use of NMR spectroscopy to determine experimentally whether in reality the phase is chiral or not.

It aims at editing, within one single 2D spectrum, every proton coupling which is experienced by a given proton site in the molecule, and leads to real phased T-edited spectroscopy (T=J+2D). This NMR experiment is based on the combination of homonuclear semi-selective refocusing techniques with a spatial frequency encoding of the sample.

Twelve hosts differing by their stereochemistry, cavity size, and the nature and the number of the substituents on the aromatic rings have been included in the study, in the aim of extracting some clues for the optimization of (129)Xe-NMR based biosensors derived from these cage molecules. Four important properties have been examined: xenon-host binding constant, in-out exchange rate of the noble gas, chemical shift, and relaxation of caged xenon.

This methodology provides a powerful tool to visualise enantiomers out of unresolved proton spectra. A modified SERF sequence is presented where the resulting 2D spectrum can be phased to increase the resolution.
