We report on a study concerning a retrospective monocentric series of 73 lung cancers operated on between July 2004 and December 2009. All patients had a mineralogical analysis of a sample of lung tissue combined with an occupational questionnaire. This combination enables us to suggest a declaration of occupational exposure in almost one third of cases.

We report a case of acute fatal fibrosing silico-proteinosis occurring in nine months in a young woman who had voluntarily inhaled scouring powder. We recall the reports in the literature of the subacute or chronic forms associated with systemic diseases occurring after such inhalational practices. We recall the need for specific questioning and to complete the study, the need for microscopy and electron-microscopy associated with X-ray defraction, either on the alveolar lavage fluid or on a lung biopsy.

In order to evaluate the effect on prolonging survival of alternating chemotherapy and radiotherapy schedules in patients with limited disease small cell lung cancer, 89 patients were included in a multi-institutional pilot study between January 1986 and May 1989. Treatment consisted of induction chemotherapy using the combination of doxorubicin, etoposide and ifosfamide (AVI) for four consecutive courses, followed by two cycles of the VI chemotherapy alternating with three hyperfractionated radiotherapy courses and then followed by two additional courses of AVI. Objective response to the four cycles of AVI combination was observed in 65 patients (75%).

Alternatively to the usual evaluation summary, a characteristic of small cell lung cancer, is the probability of significant diffuse metastases; the prognosis is directly linked to the extent of these metastases. Moreover, the assessment of the initial extension becomes heavier and more costly as investigations continue and each new technology appears. In order to evaluate the contribution of each examination, a classification has been established as a function of the time-scale to obtain the results, of the technology involved, or whether the investigation is painful or not and any likelihood of iatrogenic side-effects.

From July 1987 to July 1988, 35 patients with non small cell lung cancer, stage IV, were included in a phase II trial (GLOT NPC 87/01). The treatment was as follows: cisplatin 50 mg/m2 day 1, vindesin 3 mg/m2 day 1, mitomycin 6 mg/m2 day 2, and bleomycin 15 mg/day, day 1 + 2 by continuous infusion. The evaluation for response was assessed after three courses of chemotherapy.

We report 2 new cases of intestinal metastases from lung cancer. Such metastases are not exceptional, but their clinical manifestations are rare and their diagnosis during evaluation of lung cancer is difficult. This diagnosis could be suggested by the presence of iron deficiency anaemia or melena in a patient being investigated for lung cancer.
