A new technique for the repair and reconstruction of frontoethmoidal encephalomeningoceles by medial orbital composite-unit translocation.

A frontoethmoidal encephalomeningocele is a herniation of brain and meninges through a congenital bone defect in the skull at the junction of the frontal and ethmoidal bones. Between 1992 and 1999, we treated 145 cases of frontoethmoidal encephalomeningocele. Before 1993, the operation was performed in two stages.

Morphologic study of 120 skull base defects in frontoethmoidal encephalomeningoceles.

The patients underwent thorough physical examinations and radiographic investigations including spiral three-dimensional computed tomography scan.

Treatment of severely head injured patients with absence of basal cisterns on initial CT scans.

Sixty-four severely head injured patients with absence of basal cisterns on initial CT scan were studied from January 1986 to March 1989. None had good recovery at 6 months follow-up period. The result from logistic regression analysis pointed to the GCS at 24 hours following injury as an independent, significant outcome predictor.

Intracranial extramedullary hematopoiesis inducing epilepsy in a patient with beta-thalassemia--hemoglobin E.

Generalized epileptiform seizures developed in a 23-year-old patient with beta-thalassemia-hemoglobin E. A computed tomographic scan suggested an intracranial mass. Surgery disclosed an extramedullary hematopoietic mass compressing the brain.
