The participation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) in ovarian function in cattle is still not fully understood. The aim of this in vitro study was to determine: (i) the immunolocalization, mRNA expression and tissue concentration of PPARα, PPARδ and PPARγ in the bovine corpus luteum (CL) ( = 40) throughout the estrous cycle, and (ii) the involvement of PPAR in PGF-induced processes related to luteolysis. CL ( = 9) explants were cultured in the presence of PPAR antagonists (10 M) in combination with or without PGF receptor antagonist (10 M) and PGF (10 M).

Background: In the year 2007 a group of experts come together to discuss criteria for acute cholecystitis and to establish therapeutic guidelines and states of gravity in this disease.

Objectives: we correlated the criteria of the Tokyo Guidelines 2007 with the anatomopathology study of the surgical specimen.

Setting: Service of Urgencies of the National Clinic Hospital in Córdoba, Argentine.

Hydatid cyst of the pancreas is a rare location of this disease. We study the case of a female patient with primary hydatid cyst of the pancreas coming from and endemic area and presenting pain and palpable tumor in epigastrium and right upper abdomen. The neurofibroma is a benign tumor that grows from the sheath of the peripheral nerves, which is often localized on superficial tissues, especially in isolated forms. The neurofibromas can be of two types, localized or diffuse, the last one closely related to Von Recklinghausen disease or NF-1. We described a 37 years old male e patient, 37 years without symptoms, and the computed tomography scan (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging showed a tumor in proximity to the right kidney, the psoas muscle, the spine and compressing the cava vein, but cannot be accurately determinate the invasion of these structures.

Background: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is considerated as the gold standard for the gallbaldder stones treatment, however, in the international literature the adapted smaller incisions is still an alternative procedure. Objetives: To compare the results of the laparoscopic cholecystectomy with the cholecystectomy by adapted smaller incisions.

Design: Prospective and comparative protocolized study.

We have tested the predictive value of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) histogram analysis in stratifying progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in bevacizumab-treated patients with recurrent glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) from the multi-center BRAIN study. Available MRI's from patients enrolled in the BRAIN study (n = 97) were examined by generating ADC histograms from areas of enhancing tumor on T1 weighted post-contrast images fitted to a two normal distribution mixture curve. ADC classifiers including the mean ADC from the lower curve (ADC-L) and the mean lower curve proportion (LCP) were tested for their ability to stratify PFS and OS by using Cox proportional hazard ratios and the Kaplan-Meier method with log-rank test.

Aim Of The Study: The Alvarado score is a validated test in clinical adult surgery practice which can be helpful in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis. This study aimed to assess the reliability and the reproducibility of this score for patients presenting in the emergency room with acute right lower quadrant abdominal pain.

Material And Methods: A prospective monocenter study included all adults who presented in the emergency room with right lower quadrant abdominal pain.

Introduction: To determine whether a Web-based survey was an acceptable method of data collection for a clinic-based case-control study of adult brain cancer, the authors compared the reliability of paired responses to a main and resurvey for participants completing surveys by telephone (n=74) or self-administered on the Web (n=465) between 2003 and 2006.

Methods: Recruitment of cases was done at the Evanston Northwestern Healthcare Kellogg Cancer Care Center and the Duke University Medical Center Cancer Control division, and controls were friends and siblings of cases. Twenty-five variables were examined, including smoking, oral contraceptive and residential histories, water sources, meat preparation, fruit and vegetable consumption, and pesticide use.

Background/aims: The treatment of acutely obstructed carcinoma of the left colon still represents a matter of controversy. The aim of this retrospective study is to review the results of three surgical procedures used in our department of Visceral Surgery (subtotal colectomy, segmental resection following intraoperative irrigation, and Hartman's procedure) and to determine if there were advantages of one technique over the other.

Methodology: Ninety-three patients with acute left colonic obstruction were treated by subtotal/total colectomy (n=38), segmental resection following intraoperative irrigation (n=39), and Hartman's procedure (n=16).

Purpose: An analysis was conducted of pharmacist interventions and resuscitation experiences, including pharmacist participation in a hospital emergency department (ED), and the potential cost avoidance associated with the interventions made by the pharmacists.

Methods: All pharmacists working in the ED prospectively documented the pharmacist interventions that were accepted by physicians and nursing staff and entered into a spreadsheet on a weekly basis, between September 1, 2003, and December 31, 2003. Intervention categories included the provision of drug information; recommendations for dosage adjustment, formulary interchange, initiation of medications, alternative drug therapy, discontinuation of drug therapy, changes in medication therapy due to allergy notification, drug therapy duplication prevention, or changes in the route of drug administration; questions from nursing staff; order clarifications; drug compatibility issues; patient information; toxicology; and drug interaction identification.
