In vitro tests at the air-liquid interface (ALI) represent valuable alternatives to animal experiments to assess the acute toxicity of inhalable compounds. However, these methods still need to be characterized for the toxicity evaluation of complex mixtures such as combustion smokes. In this study, Alveolar type I or Alveolar type 2 cells in co-culture with macrophages were investigated as models for evaluating the acute toxicity of complex mixtures at the air-liquid interface.

Loss of sensitivity in the operated area is common after some plastic surgery procedures and promotes accidental trauma on a daily basis. Several studies showed that a loss of sensitivity is constant after an abdominoplasty. We report here the cases of three 3 degree burns by contact, at the subumbilical level, with a hot water bottle soon after an abdominoplasty, responsible for significant aesthetic sequelae.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze how different shift-level nursing organizational factors impact the risk of nosocomial infections (NIs) in very preterm infants in NICUs.
  • Conducted from 2014 to 2018 across three tertiary NICUs in Quebec, the research included 1921 infants and used mixed-effect logistic regression to evaluate data on nursing overtime ratios (OTRs) and nursing provision ratios (NPRs).
  • Results showed that higher nursing overtime was linked to increased odds of NIs, while a higher number of actual nurses compared to recommended levels was associated with lower odds of NIs, indicating the importance of proper staffing in preventing infections.

Background: Umbilical hernia (UH) is a common pediatric condition, for which delaying surgical repair for asymptomatic UH until after age 3 is recommended due to a high incidence of spontaneous closure. We aimed to determine the adherence to guidelines, rate of urgent surgical repair, outcomes, cost, and interinstitutional referral patterns of UH repair in the province of Quebec (Canada).

Methods: This was a population-based retrospective cohort study of children 28 days to 17 years old who underwent UH repair between 2010 and 2020 using health administrative databases.

Sound emissions from human activities represent a pervasive environmental stressor. Individual responses in terms of behaviour, physiology or anatomy are well documented but whether they propagate through nested ecological interactions to alter complex communities needs to be better understood. This is even more relevant for freshwater ecosystems that harbour a disproportionate fraction of biodiversity but receive less attention than marine and terrestrial systems.

Animal models are considered prime study models for inhalation-like toxicity assessment. However, in light of animal experimentation reduction (3Rs), we developed and investigated an alternative in vitro method to study systemic-like responses to inhalation-like exposures. A coculture platform was established to emulate inter-organ crosstalks between a pulmonary barrier, which constitutes the route of entry of inhaled compounds, and the liver, which plays a major role in xenobiotic metabolism.

Large and complicated hernias are doubly challenging; not only must the hernia be treated according to a degree of severity, but it also necessary to prevent compartment syndrome during reintegration of the viscera. Possible complications range from intestinal necrosis to perforation of the hollow organs. We are presenting the rare case of a duodenal perforation in a man with large strangulated hernia.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate how the occupancy levels of Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) affect the discharge rates and length of stay for infants born before 33 weeks gestation.
  • Researchers analyzed data from over 3,300 premature infants admitted to five NICUs from 2014 to 2018, using statistical models to understand these associations.
  • Findings revealed that lower occupancy was linked to lower discharge likelihood, while higher occupancy led to increased chances of discharge and a shorter average length of stay.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how nurse staffing levels and occupancy rates in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) affect the health outcomes of preterm infants born before 33 weeks of gestation.
  • Researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study involving 1870 infants, finding that higher nursing ratios correlated with lower mortality/morbidity rates, while higher occupancy rates linked to increased risks.
  • The findings suggest that maintaining optimal nurse staffing and reducing overcrowding in NICUs could enhance outcomes for very preterm infants, highlighting the need for effective resource management in healthcare settings.

Article Synopsis
  • Interactions between invasive species can enhance their ecological impact, yet there is limited research on how these relationships affect aquatic invasive alien species (IAS).
  • This study examines the interaction between the predatory round goby fish and the invasive Asian clam, focusing on how habitat complexity, provided by clam shells, influences the goby's feeding behavior compared to a native fish species.
  • Results indicate that while habitat complexity affects predation rates, the round goby shows a higher feeding efficiency with increased shell density, suggesting a facilitative interaction that could contribute to its ecological success in invaded environments.
