Objectives: Adult cochlear implant (CI) recipients obtain varying levels of speech perception from their device. Adult CI users adapt quickly to their CI if they have no peripheral "bottom-up" or neurocognitive "top-down" limiting factors. Our objective here was to understand the influence of limiting factors on the progression of sentence understanding in quiet and in noise, initially and over time.

Background: Pacemakers (PMs) and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) increasingly automatically record and remotely transmit nonsustained ventricular tachycardia (NSVT) episodes, which may reveal ventricular oversensing.

Objectives: We aimed to develop and validate a machine learning algorithm that accurately classifies NSVT episodes transmitted by PMs and ICDs in order to lighten health care workload burden and improve patient safety.

Methods: PMs or ICDs (Boston Scientific, St Paul, MN) from 4 French hospitals with ≥1 transmitted NSVT episode were split into 3 subgroups: training set, validation set, and test set.

Symmetries in a Hamiltonian play an important role in quantum physics because they correspond directly with conserved quantities of the related system. In this Letter, we propose quantum algorithms capable of testing whether a Hamiltonian exhibits symmetry with respect to a group. We demonstrate that familiar expressions of Hamiltonian symmetry in quantum mechanics correspond directly with the acceptance probabilities of our algorithms.

Objectives: Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia (CMML) are associated with systemic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases (SIADs) in 10-30% of cases. The aims of this study were (i) to evaluate the prevalence of venous thromboembolism VTE in patients presenting with both MDS/CMML and SIADs, (ii) to describe risk factors associated with thrombosis, and (iii) to analyse the impact of VTE on overall survival and transformation to acute myeloid leukaemia in comparison to patients with MDS/CMML-associated SIADs without VTE.

Methods: This retrospective multicentre case-control study was conducted among patients with MDS/CMML and dysimmune disorders and featured in the French retrospective database of the French Network of Dysimmune Disorders Associated with Hemopathies (MINHEMON), diagnosed with MDS/CMML and dysimmune disorders.

Objective: The "Marginal benefit from acoustic amplification" version 2 (MBAA2) sentence test has been used in France in the routine evaluation of cochlear implant (CI) users for 20 years. Here we present four studies that characterise and validate the test, and compare it with the French matrix sentence test.

Design And Sample: An analytic method was developed to obtain speech recognition threshold in noise (SNR50) from testing at a fixed signal to noise ratios (SNRs).

Bacterial and fungal pathogens face various microenvironmental conditions during infection. In addition to acidosis, nutrient consumption, and hypercapnia, pathogen infections are associated with hypoxia, which is induced by bacterial and fungal respiration during the formation of foci of infection or biofilms. Consequently, the in vivo interaction between host immune cells and pathogens is anticipated to occur mainly under low-oxygen conditions.

Anthropometric measurements have been used to assess an individual's body composition, disease risk, and nutritional status. Three-dimensional (3D) optical devices can rapidly acquire body surface scans in the form of a triangular mesh which can then be used to obtain anthropometric measurements such as body volume, limb lengths, and circumferences; however, the meshes provided by some scanners may include missing data patches known as holes. These need to be repaired in order to obtain correct landmark detection and automatic calculation of anthropometric measurements-especially body volume.

Objective: Normal-hearing subjects listening to acoustic simulations of cochlear implants (CI) can obtain sentence recognition scores near 100% in quiet and in 10 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) noise with acute exposure. However, average sentence recognition scores for real CI listeners are generally lower, even after months of experience, and there is a high degree of heterogeneity. Our aim was to identify the relative importance and strength of factors that prevent CI listeners from achieving early, 1-mo scores as high as those for normal-hearing-listener acoustic simulations.

Short INterspersed Elements (SINEs) make very useful phylogenetic markers because the integration of a particular element at a location in the genome is irreversible and of known polarity. These attributes make analysis of SINEs as phylogenetic characters an essentially homoplasy-free affair. Alu elements are primate-specific SINEs that make up a large portion of the human genome and are also widespread in other primates.
