Bronchial artery embolization is now a common treatment for massive pulmonary hemoptysis if flexible bronchoscopy at the bedside failed to control the bleeding. Complications of this technique range from benign chest pain to devastating neurological impairments. We report the case of a 41-year-old man who developed an ST elevation myocardial infarction during bronchial artery embolization, presumably because of coronary embolism by injected particles.

Here, we show that the transcripts of HD2 family members selectively accumulate in response to glucose through a HXK1-independent signal transduction pathway during the early stages of seedling growth. Germination was enhanced in hd2a null mutants relative to wild-type seeds.

We have isolated three AP2 genes (GmBBM1, GmAIL5, GmPLT2) from somatic embryo cultures of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr, and discovered GmBBM1 to be homologous to AtBBM and BnBBM.

The Arabidopsis genome contains four HD2 genes, namely HD2A, HD2B, HD2C, and HD2D. We have previously demonstrated that HD2A, HD2B, and HD2C can repress transcription directly by targeting to promoters in planta.

Here, we show that the portion of the tCUP sequence containing a variety of cryptic gene regulatory elements is related to a new family of moderately repetitive sequences (10(2) copies), the RENT (repetitive element from Nicotiana tabacum) family. The RENT family is found only in certain Nicotiana species.

In particular, during brain development, the N-terminal part of mammalian PEBP is specifically cleaved and the resulting 11 amino acid peptide stimulates the growth and activity of acetylcholinergic neurons. The crystallographic structure of bovine and human PEBPs has revealed that their N- and C-terminal parts are accessible and exposed to the solvent suggesting that they may be involved in specific interactions with cellular partners.

The ability to fabricate size-controlled silicon nanocrystals encapsulated by insulating SiO2 would be of significant interest to the microelectronics industry. But reproducible manufacture of such crystals is hampered by the amorphous nature of SiO2 and the differing thermal expansion coefficients of the two materials.

We have isolated a constitutive promoter sequence, tCUP, from tobacco by T-DNA tagging using a promoterless GUS-nos3' reporter gene construct. The T-DNA integration event produced a translational fusion with the GUS gene that is expressed widely in organs, at both the mRNA and enzyme activity levels. In tobacco transformed with a tCUP-GUS-nos3' gene, GUS specific activity in leaves was within a range of values similar to those of plants transformed with the widely used constitutive promoter gene fusion, CaMV 35S promoter-GUS-nos3'.

Thanatin contains 21 amino acids including two cysteine residues that form a disulfide bridge. Two-dimensional (2D) 1H-NMR spectroscopy and molecular modelling have been used to determine its three-dimensional (3D) structure in water.

Two new variants, the [Ile4,7]- and [Ile2,4,7]surfactins, were thus produced by Bacillus subtilis and their separation was achieved by reverse-phase HPLC. Amino acids of the heptapeptide moiety were analysed by chemical methods, and the lipid moiety was identified by beta-hydroxy anteiso pentadecanoic acid by combined GC/MS.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAcetohydroxy acid synthase (AHAS) is an essential enzyme for many organisms as it catalyzes the first step in the biosynthesis of the branched-chain amino acids valine, isoleucine, and leucine. The enzyme is under allosteric control by these amino acids. It is also inhibited by several classes of herbicides, such as the sulfonylureas, imidazolinones and triazolopyrimidines, that are believed to bind to a relic quinone-binding site.

Experimental data included 9 coupling constants, 61 nuclear Overhauser effect derived distances, NH temperature coefficients, and 13C relaxation times. Two distance geometry (DISMAN) protocols converged toward models of the structure and the best of them were refined by restrained and unrestrained molecular dynamics (GROMOS).

The tripeptide N-formyl-Met-Pro-Phe-OMe (f-MPF-OMe), an analogue of the signal peptide N-formyl-Met-Leu-Phe-OH (f-MLF-OH), was synthesized and its chemotactic activity evaluated; it showed no activity in either superoxide production or calcium mobility with human neutrophils. However, the corresponding acid f-MPF-OH retained about 25% activity in the production of superoxide. The conformation of the f-MPF-OMe analogue was evaluated by NMR spectroscopy and molecular simulation and shown to predominate in a gamma-turn with a hydrogen bond between Met CO and Phe NH.

2-D and 3-D NMR techniques were used to investigate the conformations in solution of several peptides and proteins for which crystalline structures are not available yet. Insect defensin A is a small (40 aa) antibiotic protein exhibiting a characteristic 'loop-helix-beta-sheet' structure. A striking analogy was found with charybdotoxin, a scorpion toxin in which a CSH (cysteine stabilized alpha-helix) motif is also present.

Expression of the AHAS gene under the control of the CaMV 35S promoter in transgenic tobacco resulted in selective imidazolinone resistance, confirming that the single base-pair change found near the 3' end of the coding region of this gene is responsible for imidazolinone resistance. A chimeric AHAS gene containing both the imr1 mutation and the csr1 mutation, responsible for selective resistance to sulfonylurea herbicides, was constructed.
