Development of an automated CBCT-based simulation-free platform for expedited palliative radiotherapy on a conventional linear accelerator.

Background: Conventional approaches for emergent or expedited palliative radiotherapy (RT) involve the application of cumbersome vendor-provided solutions and/or multiple patient appointments to complete the RT workflow within a compressed timeframe.

Purpose: This report delineates the clinical development of an in-house, semi-automated Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)-based simulation-free platform for expedited palliative RT on conventional linacs, intended to supplant existing techniques employed at this institution.

Methods: The internal software, termed SimFree Wizard (SFW), was engineered utilizing a C#-based application programming interface integrated within the treatment planning system (TPS).

Management and toxicological analysis of ocular hypertension after EyeCee ONE intraocular lens implantation: a case series.

Background: The EyeCee ONE intraocular lens (Nidek, Gamagori, Japan) has been withdrawn from the market due to a high number of reports of severe ocular hypertension (OHT) following phacoemulsification with implantation of this intraocular lens (IOL). In this case series, we report the results of a toxicological analysis and the surgical management of five patients with severe OHT following the implantation of defective EyeCee ONE IOLs during cataract surgery.

Cases Presentation: Five patients developed early, severe OHT refractory to maximal medical therapy following uneventful phacoemulsification (PCE) cataract surgery with implantation of an EyeCee ONE IOL from a defective lot.

Changes in rates of endophthalmitis after cataract surgery over the last 23years.

Purpose: Acute postoperative endophthalmitis (APE) is a rare but severe complication of cataract surgery. During the most recent decades, the use of povidone-iodine (PVI) before surgery combined with intracameral cefuroxime has drastically reduced the incidence of endophthalmitis. The goal of this study is to describe the changes in endophthalmitis rates after cataract surgery over the past two decades in a large tertiary ophthalmology center.

Effects of gene dosage on cognitive ability: A function-based association study across brain and non-brain processes.

Copy-number variants (CNVs) that increase the risk for neurodevelopmental disorders also affect cognitive ability. However, such CNVs remain challenging to study due to their scarcity, limiting our understanding of gene-dosage-sensitive biological processes linked to cognitive ability. We performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in 258,292 individuals, which identified-for the first time-a duplication at 2q12.

[Techniques for imaging optic disc vasculature in glaucomatous optic neuropathy: A review of the literature].

The anatomy and vasculature of the optic nerve head are complex and subject to numerous variations. The main risk factor for glaucomatous optic neuropathy is elevated intraocular pressure, but many other factors have been identified. A vascular component seems to play an important role in the pathogenesis and/or progression of glaucomatous optic neuropathy, either under the influence of ocular hypertension or as an independent risk factor, particularly as in normal tension glaucoma (NTG).

Neisseria gonorrhoeae treatment failure to the recommended antibiotic regimen-Québec, Canada, 2015-19.

Objective: To describe Neisseria gonorrhoeae treatment failure to the recommended antimicrobial regimens (azithromycin, cefixime and ceftriaxone).

Methods: Our study was a longitudinal analysis of treatment failures from an observational open cohort of gonococcal infection cases collected in Québec, Canada (n = 2547) between September 2015 and December 2019. Epidemiological and clinical data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire, direct case interviews and chart reviews.

Three-Dimensional Microarchitecture of Lamina Cribrosa Pores in High and Normal Tension Glaucoma Using Optical Coherence Tomography.

Prcis: The lamina cribrosa (LC) pores of patients with high-tension glaucoma (HTG) appear to take a more tortuous pathway than the LC pores of patients with non-glaucomatous (NG).

Objective: To compare the LC pore microarchitecture in patients with HTG, normal tension glaucoma (NTG), and NG, by reconstructions of the LC made from tomographic images.

Patients And Methods: Spectral domain-optical coherence tomography images of 52 eyes (18 NG, 18 HTG, and 16 NTG) of 29 patients were analyzed.

Although the first signs of autism are often observed as early as 18-36 months of age, there is a broad uncertainty regarding future development, and clinicians lack predictive tools to identify those who will later be diagnosed with co-occurring intellectual disability (ID). Here, we developed predictive models of ID in autistic children (n=5,633 from three cohorts), integrating different classes of genetic variants alongside developmental milestones. The integrated model yielded an AUC ROC=0.

[Glaucoma surgeries: Long-term results - A review].

The surgical treatment of glaucoma has been and is still based on filtering surgeries, commonly used for about half a century. The safety and efficacy of these techniques have been well described, as it has also been done for cyclophotocoagulation and valves or tubes, indicated in France mostly for refractory glaucoma. Minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries have emerged in recent decades, increasing the number of therapeutic options, and allowing treatment decisions to be as patient-centered as possible.

Multimodal Approach in Dry Eye Disease Combining In Vivo Confocal Microscopy and HLA-DR Expression.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the association between corneal images provided by in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) with clinical parameters and conjunctival expression of HLA-DR antigen in patients with dry eye disease (DED).

Methods: Two hundred fourteen eyes of 214 patients with DED were analyzed, consisting of 2 groups of patients - 63 with autoimmune dry eye disease (AIDED) and 151 with non-autoimmune dry eye disease (NAIDED). Patients underwent a full clinical examination, including symptom screening, using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire, and objective analysis of DED signs by Schirmer's testing, tear break-up time (TBUT), Oxford's test, and IVCM corneal imaging.

Acceptability, feasibility, equity and resource use for prenatal screening for chlamydia and gonorrhea: A systematic review.

Background: A systematic review on acceptability, feasibility, equity and resource use was conducted as part of updating recommendations from the Public Health Agency of Canada on prenatal screening for (CT) and (NG).

Methods: Information sources, including MEDLINE® All, Embase and Cochrane CENTRAL (January 2003-January 2021) electronic databases were searched for studies that assessed acceptability, feasibility, equity and resource use of screening for CT or NG in pregnant persons aged ≥12 years. The Risk of Bias Assessment Tool for Non-Randomized Studies was used for quality assessment and a narrative synthesis was prepared.

One year efficacy and safety of inferior implantation of Xen 45® Gel Stent in refractory glaucoma.

Purpose: The goal of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of inferior implantation of the Xen Gel 45® Stent in a cohort of refractory glaucoma patients who had undergone multiple failed procedures and lacked healthy superior conjunctiva.

Patients And Methods: We retrospectively included individuals with refractory glaucoma who underwent implantation of a Xen 45® in the inferior quadrants of the conjunctiva. At the 12-month mark, two success criteria were assessed: "Complete" success, defined as an intraocular pressure (IOP)≤21mmHg with a≥20% reduction in IOP without additional IOP-lowering medications, the absence of a requirement for additional filtering surgery, and the absence of chronic hypotony; and "Qualified" success, which consisted of patients meeting the same criteria but requiring glaucoma medications postoperatively.

Effects of short-chain fatty acid-butyrate supplementation on expression of circadian-clock genes, sleep quality, and inflammation in patients with active ulcerative colitis: a double-blind randomized controlled trial.

Background: The regulation of the circadian clock genes, which coordinate the activity of the immune system, is disturbed in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Emerging evidence suggests that butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid produced by the gut microbiota is involved in the regulation of inflammatory responses as well as circadian-clock genes. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of sodium-butyrate supplementation on the expression of circadian-clock genes, inflammation, sleep and life quality in active ulcerative colitis (UC) patients.

Addressing dispersion in mis-measured multivariate binomial outcomes: A novel statistical approach for detecting differentially methylated regions in bisulfite sequencing data.

Motivated by a DNA methylation application, this article addresses the problem of fitting and inferring a multivariate binomial regression model for outcomes that are contaminated by errors and exhibit extra-parametric variations, also known as dispersion. While dispersion in univariate binomial regression has been extensively studied, addressing dispersion in the context of multivariate outcomes remains a complex and relatively unexplored task. The complexity arises from a noteworthy data characteristic observed in our motivating dataset: non-constant yet correlated dispersion across outcomes.

Fast matrix completion in epigenetic methylation studies with informative covariates.

DNA methylation is an important epigenetic mark that modulates gene expression through the inhibition of transcriptional proteins binding to DNA. As in many other omics experiments, the issue of missing values is an important one, and appropriate imputation techniques are important in avoiding an unnecessary sample size reduction as well as to optimally leverage the information collected. We consider the case where relatively few samples are processed via an expensive high-density whole genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS) strategy and a larger number of samples is processed using more affordable low-density, array-based technologies.

A resiliency intervention adapted for older women with HIV: Results from a pilot randomized controlled trial in the northeastern US.

Aging with HIV often results in psychosocial and health-related challenges for women; however, no resiliency interventions exist for older women with HIV (WWH). WWH aged ≥50 were randomized to 10 group sessions of an adapted resiliency intervention or time-matched supportive psychotherapy. Assessments were conducted at three timepoints.

Introduction: Even though the local tolerance of prostaglandin (PG) analogues has improved drastically since the introduction of preservative-free (PF) eye drops, prescription patterns still vary widely among practitioners and between countries and could have an impact on the ocular surface of treated patients and, in consequence, their adherence. The aim of this study is to explore the prescribing patterns of PG analogues monotherapy in France and to evaluate their impact on ocular surface status.

Methods: This was a national multicenter cross-sectional observational study that was conducted by 18 glaucoma experts in France.

Canadian clinic-based data have identified a high prevalence of and resistance to antibiotic treatments. This article estimates the prevalence of infections among Montréal gbMSM, explores correlates for infection and estimates the prevalence of mutations associated with antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Effect of a culture supernatant on diarrhea and performance parameters of piglets in the post-weaning period and on expression of the gene .

Objectives: To evaluate the effects of a cell-free supernatant from (CFSM) on performance and diarrhearelated parameters and the presence of F4+ enterotoxigenic (ETEC) in piglets during post-weaning, and to evaluate the effect of the CFSM on gene expression in an F4+.

Animals And Procedure: In 3 trials with 90 piglets per trial, pigs were assigned to receive a placebo or 1 of 2 CFSM treatments and observed for diarrhea and performance. Fecal swabs were taken to determine the presence of ETEC.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy consists of breathing 100% oxygen continuously or intermittently in a chamber at a pressure equal to or greater than 1.4 absolute atmospheres. Indicated for the emergency treatment of carbon monoxide poisoning and other medical-surgical pathologies such as gas embolism or necrotizing soft-tissue infections, various studies have shown a beneficial effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in certain ocular pathologies, notably of microcirculatory origin, such as central retinal artery occlusion or macular edema linked to retinal vein occlusions.
