Background: Downy mildew is a plant disease that affects all cultivated European grapevine varieties. The disease is caused by the oomycete Plasmopara viticola. The current strategy to control this threat relies on repeated applications of fungicides.

Specificities of mammary and periprostatic adipose tissues: A perspective from cancer research.

In addition to the major subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissues (AT), other adipose depots are dispersed throughout the body and are found in close interaction with proximal organs such as mammary and periprostatic AT (MAT and PPAT respectively). These ATs have an effect on proximal organ function during physiological processes and diseases such as cancer. We highlighted here some of their most distinctive features in terms of tissular organization and responses to external stimuli and discussed how obesity affects them based on our current knowledge.

After screening more than 1300 articles, we highlight a selection of important cardiology articles published in 2023. Starting with prevention, we note articles that look at the effect of semaglutide in patients with obesity as well as a first-in-class drug, bempedoic acid, on cardiovascular outcomes.

Managing Impending Nonsevere Hypoglycemia With Oral Carbohydrates in Type 1 Diabetes: The REVERSIBLE Trial.

Objective: Current guidelines recommend initiating treatment for nonsevere (NS) hypoglycemia with 15 g carbohydrates (CHO) at 15-min intervals when blood glucose (BG) reaches <70 mg/dL (3.9 mmol/L). Despite this recommendation, NS hypoglycemia management remains challenging for individuals living with type 1 diabetes (T1D).

Radiation Recall Dermatitis Following Treatment With Pembrolizumab: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Radiation recall dermatitis is an inflammatory reaction of the skin that may infrequently occur in areas of the skin that have been previously treated with radiation therapy. This is thought to be due to a triggering agent administered after radiation therapy which leads to an acute inflammatory reaction, manifesting as a skin rash. We present the case of a 58-year-old male with recurrent invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue, previously treated with chemotherapy and radiation therapy, who presented with progression of his disease.

Influence of inputs for bone lesion segmentation in longitudinal F-FDG PET/CT imaging studies.

In metastatic breast cancer, bone metastases are prevalent and associated with multiple complications. Assessing their response to treatment is therefore crucial. Most deep learning methods segment or detect lesions on a single acquisition while only a few focus on longitudinal studies.

Deformable image registration with deep network priors: a study on longitudinal PET images.

This paper proposes a novel approach for the longitudinal registration of PET imaging acquired for the monitoring of patients with metastatic breast cancer. Unlike with other image analysis tasks, the use of deep learning (DL) has not significantly improved the performance of image registration. With this work, we propose a new registration approach to bridge the performance gap between conventional and DL-based methods: medical image registration method regularized by architecture (MIRRBA).

Prognostic Value of Metabolic, Volumetric and Textural Parameters of Baseline [F]FDG PET/CT in Early Triple-Negative Breast Cancer.

(1) Background: triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) remains a clinical and therapeutic challenge primarily affecting young women with poor prognosis. TNBC is currently treated as a single entity but presents a very diverse profile in terms of prognosis and response to treatment. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) with F-fluorodeoxyglucose ([F]FDG) is gaining importance for the staging of breast cancers.

Combining Superpixels and Deep Learning Approaches to Segment Active Organs in Metastatic Breast Cancer PET Images.

Semi-automatic measurements are performed on FDG PET-CT images to monitor the evolution of metastatic sites in the clinical follow-up of metastatic breast cancer patients. Apart from being time-consuming and prone to subjective approximation, semi-automatic tools cannot make the difference between cancerous regions and active organs, presenting a high FDG uptake.In this work, we combine a deep learning-based approach with a superpixel segmentation method to segment the main active organs (brain, heart, bladder) from full-body PET images.

Deep learning approaches for bone and bone lesion segmentation on 18FDG PET/CT imaging in the context of metastatic breast cancer.

FDG PET/CT imaging is commonly used in diagnosis and follow-up of metastatic breast cancer, but its quantitative analysis is complicated by the number and location heterogeneity of metastatic lesions. Considering that bones are the most common location among metastatic sites, this work aims to compare different approaches to segment the bones and bone metastatic lesions in breast cancer.Two deep learning methods based on U-Net were developed and trained to segment either both bones and bone lesions or bone lesions alone on PET/CT images.

Prognostic Impact of Pretherapeutic FDG-PET in Localized Anal Cancer.

Due to the heterogeneity of tumour mass segmentation methods and lack of consensus, our study evaluated the prognostic value of pretherapeutic positron emission tomography with fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG-PET) metabolic parameters using different segmentation methods in patients with localized anal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Eighty-one patients with FDG-PET before radiochemotherapy were retrospectively analyzed. Semiquantitative data were measured with three fixed thresholds (35%, 41% and 50% of Maximum Standardized Uptake Value (SUVmax)) and four segmentation methods based on iterative approaches (Black, Adaptive, Nestle and Fitting).

Introduction: Herein we report a case of a surgical repair of double substance loss along the nasolabial groove by means of a double superior advancement flap from the cheek to the upper lip that we have here called the "double jigsaw puzzle" flap.

Observation: A 58-year-old man underwent surgery for 2 basal cell carcinomas located in the right white upper lip. The two lesions were first removed and the two defects were then carried over to the cheek symmetrically along the nasolabial groove.

Evaluation of radiation treatment volumes for unknown primaries of the head and neck in the era of FDG PET.

Objectives: Positron-emission tomography (PET) has improved identification of the primary tumor as well as occult nodal burden in cancer of the head and neck. Nevertheless, there are still patients where the primary tumor cannot be located. In these situations, the standard of care is comprehensive head and neck radiation therapy however it is unclear whether this is necessary.

Comprehensive and comparative exploration of the Atp7b mouse plasma proteome.

Wilson's disease (WD), a rare genetic disease caused by mutations in the ATP7B gene, is associated with altered expression and/or function of the copper-transporting ATP7B protein, leading to massive toxic accumulation of copper in the liver and brain. The Atp7b mouse, a genetic and phenotypic model of WD, was developed to provide new insights into the pathogenic mechanisms of WD. Many plasma proteins are secreted by the liver, and impairment of liver function can trigger changes to the plasma proteome.

Comparison of Two Cough-Augmentation Techniques Delivered by a Home Ventilator in Subjects With Neuromuscular Disease.

Background: Breath-stacking, which consists of taking 2 or more consecutive ventilator insufflations without exhaling, is a noninvasive and inexpensive cough-assistance technique for patients with neuromuscular disease. Volumetric cough mode (VCM) is a recently introduced ventilator mode consisting of a programmable intermittent deep breath equal to a set percentage of the baseline tidal volume. Here, our objective was to compare VCM to breath-stacking during volume-control continuous mandatory ventilation in subjects on long-term noninvasive mechanical ventilation at home.
