Addressing Mental Health Disability in Unsheltered Homelessness: Outpatient Conservatorship in Los Angeles.

Objective: The authors sought to describe a pilot program for gravely disabled individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness in Los Angeles County that illustrates a promising public health framework to address mental health-related disability in homeless populations.

Methods: Homeless outreach teams implementing the outpatient conservatorship (OPC) pilot program adopted a population health approach, multisystem care coordination, and prioritization of the least restrictive environments. The program allowed initiation of a Lanterman-Petris-Short (LPS) conservatorship outside of a hospital, with the goal of serving highly vulnerable individuals in the least restrictive settings.

Utilizing mental health professionals to help prevent the next attacks.

Recent high-profile cases and scientific research on lone actor terrorist attackers have indicated that there may be an association with mental illness. Simultaneously, countering violent extremism (CVE) initiatives have recently been placing more emphasis on building intervention (aka secondary prevention) programmes to address this matter, with mental health professionals possibly playing important roles in preventing lone actor terrorist attacks. Mental health professionals can contribute to intervention programmes, as practitioners and as leaders, but more so by drawing upon the threat assessment model, than because of a possible association with mental illness.

Spirit of aging rising: cross-cutting thematic modules to enrich foundation graduate social work courses.

To enrich an urban generalist MSW program serving a diverse aging community, an innovative approach was initiated. A team of students, faculty and a field instructor collaborated in creating and evaluating 3 sets of cross-cutting thematic modules. An overview of the thematic modules (addressing elder abuse, family caregiving, and mental health), integrated across multiple curriculum areas (Human Behavior and the Social Environment, Macro/Policy, Practice and Research), is presented along with results of a faculty focus group evaluating the process of coordinating module content for one full week of class per foundation area (one topic per quarter).
