is a yeast pathogen causing nosocomial outbreaks of candidemia. Its ability to adhere to inert surfaces and to be transmitted from one patient to another via medical devices is of particular concern. Like other spp.

Two distinguishable chemotypes of Ferula communis have been described: the 'nonpoisonous' chemotype, containing as main constituents the daucane esters; and the 'poisonous' chemotype containing prenylated coumarins, such as ferulenol and ferprenin. Ferulenol and ferprenin are 4-oxygenated molecules such as dicoumarol and warfarin, the first developed antivitamin K molecules. Antivitamin K molecules specifically inhibit VKORC1, an enzyme essential for recycling vitamin K.

Multicentre quality control studies demonstrated that optimization and standardization of HCV RNA reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) amplification techniques were possible: thus, a nested HCV RNA RT-PCR assay was described as a reliable tool for the detection of hepatitis C viral RNA. Besides this, another procedure, the Amplicor HCV RNA qualitative test, a standardized RT-PCR assay, became available. In order to assess the relationship between seropositivity and potential infectivity and to compare both RT-PCR assays, all patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis were evaluated at hospital de Meaux (Meaux, France) during one year.

In order to study the mechanism of action of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) several parameters have been monitored in cultured foetal rat and quail hepatocytes. At low concentrations, the PCB mixture tested (Aroclor 1254) did not affect the biological and morphological parameters studied. Above 170 mug/ml, Aroclor induced cytotoxic effects and morphological damage, similar to those that have been observed in vivo, in both animal species (i.

A 38-year-old woman was known to have had a histologically proven "idiopathic" pulmonary hemosiderosis for 7 years; the authors report the onset in this patient of polyarthralgias with articular swelling and positivity of rheumatoid factor, all features consistent with the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, whose beginning was certainly hidden by steroid therapy. This case, as some others previously published, outlines the possibility of the association of pulmonary hemosiderosis and rheumatoid arthritis: is this a casual association, or may pulmonary hemosiderosis be a rare manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis?

Po66, a mouse IgG1 monoclonal antibody, was produced by immunization against a patient lung squamous cell carcinoma. The tissue reactivity of the antibody was measured by a radioimmunological assay with enzymatically dissociated cells, by an immunofluorescence test on frozen tissue sections and by peroxidase-staining of paraffin sections. The antibody bound to lung squamous cell carcinoma, oesophagus carcinoma and, inconsistently to lung adenocarcinoma but not to the other tumours tested.

In a survey dealing with the frequency of onchocerciasis in leprous environments in the Marchoux Institute in Bamako (Mali) evidence is given that 43% of the leprous persons hospitalized there were touched in addition by onchocerciasis whereas, only 14% of the consultants in dermatology have proved to be also onchocercian. This last frequency is consistent with the overall estimation usually recognized for Mali. No difference was shown between leprous and non-leprous persons for snip.

Relative to an industrial application, the authors relate results obtained from a peculiar study on the thermic degradation of bis (tri-n-butyltin) oxide (TBTO) at various temperatures and they account for the toxic effects observed after inhaling the combustion products in the mouse and guinea pig. Thermolysis of TBTO between 200 and 600 degrees C gives saturated hydrocarbon and olefin gas, a condensate of tetrabutyltin and dibutyltin oxide and a residue composed of stannous or stannic oxides according to the temperature. Pulmonary toxicity is very important at low temperatures but after heating, toxic effects decrease.

The authors report one case of perforation of rectal with peritonitis during a barium enema administration in a patient suffering from an adeno-carcinome of colon, and died after 48 hours with collapsus. After a brief review of the literature, the authors expose pathogeny and clinical signs of this relatively rare accidients. The conclusions repose on watchful precautions according to indications and technical way of barium enema examination in patients specially exposed to perforation accidents.

The authors observed a pulmonary alvelolar proteinosis in an 11 years old child with acute leucosis. They underlined the exceptional character of this association in a child, while it is known in the adult and almost always with a bad prognosis. A dysimmunity context linked to a hematological disease and/or its treatment, is favoured among the pathogenic hypotheses.

A patient underwent surgery for the first time at the age of ten years for a right-sided adrenal phaeochromocytoma. She underwent a second operation at the age of 27 years, for a contro-lateral localisation. Phaeochromocytomas are rare in the child.

Metastatic tumors of the heart are often asymptomatic but they may dominate the clinical picture. The location in the interventricular septum can account for conduction disturbances. The authors report a case of esophagus neoplasm with septal metastasis responsible for a complete atrioventricular block.

The authors report a case of lethal acute miliary with bovine tuberculous bacilli. They stress the main characteristics of this exceptional observation :--difficulties in isolating and identifying,--favourable disposition linked to age and to a depressed cellular immunity,--pathogenic interest in the mechanisms of late endogenous reinfestation and of suffocating acute evolution.

The authors relate a case of paraneoplasic Cushing's syndrome by mediastinal tumor, probably of thymic origin. All the clinical and biological signs recall similar cases previously related. An "ACTH-like" substance has been found by biological method in a lymphoide metastasis.

The authors report a toxicological study of bis (tributyltin oxide) (TBTO) given by inhalation (oily aerosol) to 105 Hartley albino guinea pigs. Doses vary from 1 mg to 0.1 mg of TBTO per liter of aerosol.
