Previous studies have shown a higher prevalence of head and neck injuries in non-wearers when compared with wearers of mouthguards. The purpose of the present study was to compare the pattern of injuries to those of past studies and also to investigate whether the injuries sustained differed significantly between wearers and non-wearers. A sample of 321 university students participating on 555 player occasions was studied in a cross-sectional survey.

A 4 1/2-year-old boy with acute myelomonocytic leukemia developed fever, neutropenia, and a prolonged respiratory illness while receiving maintenance chemotherapy. An open lung biopsy specimen demonstrated a giant cell pneumonia with intracytoplasmic and probable intranuclear viral inclusions of the paramyxovirus type. Serologic studies demonstrated convincing evidence of a parainfluenza type 3 infection.

Two cases of pulmonary eosinophilia associated with coccidioidal infections are reported. Pulmonary eosinophilia in these cases represents a hypersensitivity reaction to the fungus. Histologically, the pulmonary eosinophilia in these cases closely mimicked or appeared identical to idiopathic chronic eosinophilic pneumonia.

The protocol for in vitro fertilisation (IVF) at Tygerberg Hospital is presented and the results are analysed. Indications for ovulation induction for IVF included the following: (a) irreversible tubal damage; (b) infertility due to immunological factors; (c) male factor-infertility; and (d) endometriosis. A combination of human menopausal gonadotrophin (HMG) and clomiphene citrate (Clomid; Mer-National) and human chorionic gonadotrophin was used.

Four patients who developed both pulmonary histiocytosis X and carcinoma of the lung are described. Some authors have hypothesized that patients with pulmonary histiocytosis X-associated scarring are also at increased risk of developing lung carcinoma. However, case reports of this phenomenon are rare.

The effect of serum supplementation was evaluated on 108 oocytes obtained from 29 patients. The oocytes were all mature and randomly distributed in two groups. Each ovum was paired with another ovum within the same patient.

To determine whether there is a prognostic value in the percentage normal sperm morphologic features in a human in vitro fertilization (IVF) program, the authors conducted a prospective study in women with bilateral tubal damage. Based on the percentage of morphologically normal spermatozoa, the patients were divided into four groups: group I, normal morphologic features between 0% and 14%; group II, 15% to 30%; group III, 31% to 45%; and group IV, 46% to 60%. One hundred ninety successful laparoscopic cycles were evaluated.

One- and two-cell embryos were obtained from F1 hybrid female mice stimulated with human menopausal gonadotrophin and randomly distributed into two groups--group 1 (no serum) and group 2 (10% patient's serum). Fifty of 53 (94.3%) one-cell embryos in group 1 had cleaved to the blastocyst stage and 44 of 49 (89.

Despite their opposite effects on prolactin secretion, both dopamine and angiotensin II inhibit adenylate cyclase activity in homogenates of anterior pituitary cells in primary culture. Dopamine and angiotensin II inhibition of adenylate cyclase was not additive, suggesting that both neurohormones inhibit the adenylate cyclase of the lactotroph cells. Pretreatment with Bordetella pertussis toxin (islet activator protein) completely suppressed the dopamine-induced inhibition of both adenylate cyclase and prolactin secretion.

In an attempt to determine the future growth of intrauterine growth-retarded babies, 14 pairs of monozygous twins, showing within-pair birth weight differences of 11% to 48% (median 28%), were followed prospectively for 3 to 9 years. Weight, length, and head circumference were measured biannually for the first 3 years of life and thereafter annually. At birth, the median within-pair percentage differences of weight (28%), length (6.

Electrocardiograms were recorded in a longitudinal study on six adult dogs with canine ceroid-lipofuscinosis (CCL) and compared with those of four unaffected animals. Two dogs exhibited minor conduction abnormalities, QRS-notching and LVH at 12 months of age. By 24 to 25 months of age, the underlying cardiac rhythm was that of a pronounced sinus arrhythmia.

In 30 male Chacma baboons, prepubertal, pubertal, and adult animals have been identified by their testicular and prostatic weights. The volume of the stromal and epithelial components of caudal prostate were calculated from morphometric determination of the percentage volume of each component and the total caudal prostate volume. Both stromal and epithelial volumes increased at puberty and plateaued at maturity.

We describe a case of polyarteritis nodosa in a 66-year-old woman who presented with multiple neurologic complaints. The case remained perplexing to the clinicians caring for her until a total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy were performed for a right adnexal mass noted on physical examination and computed tomography scan. Although unsuspected polyarteritis nodosa has been diagnosed on examination of other tissues removed at surgery, this is the first case of polyarteritis nodosa diagnosed following total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy reported in the English literature.

In performing in vitro fertilization, a stable osmolarity in the medium surrounding the egg or embryo is of the utmost importance if a good fertilization and pregnancy rate is to be achieved. This study evaluated osmolarity changes in different volumes of fluid in the Falcon 3001 and 3037 Petri dishes and the Falcon 2058 tissue culture tube over a 24-hour period. It was found that the osmolarity was more stable in the Falcon 3037 Petri dish and in the tissue culture tube.

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were recorded by chequerboard pattern-reversal stimulation in 276 normal adult subjects aged 15-73 years. The sample comprised comparable white, coloured and black groups of both sexes. Significantly shorter latencies of the major positive component were found in both male and female black subjects compared with those in whites.

A delayed hemolytic transfusion reaction (DHTR) occurring in a 30-year-old Caucasian man is described. His blood groups were B, CDe/cDE (R1R2, f-) K-, S-s+, Fy (a + b-), and Jk (a + b +). Eight days after receiving two units of packed red blood cells, his urine was strongly positive for hemoglobin; serum-free hemoglobin was 125 mg/dl.

M-mode echocardiograms were recorded from 40 healthy dogs, awake and unsedated, in left lateral recumbent position. Fifteen echocardiographic measurements were taken and correlated with body weights using linear regression equations. The left ventricular internal dimension in systole and diastole, the left ventricular wall thickness, the aortic root dimension, and the left atrial dimension had high correlation coefficients (r2), ranging from 0.

Twelve newborn pony foals underwent cardiovascular examinations (auscultation, arterial blood pressure measurements, electrocardiograms and M-mode echocardiograms) on their first day of life and then on Days 7, 14, 21, 30, 60 and 90. An age dependent, statistically significant, rapid increase of the arterial blood pressure in the first month was documented together with a slower decrease of the resting heart rate after two and three months of life. Innocent soft systolic murmurs were audible over the left heart base in a large number of the foals.

Two young goats with loud, holosystolic heart murmurs heard best over the left and right heart base were suspected to have interventricular septal defects. Cardiac catheterization with angiocardiography supported the clinical diagnosis in both goats and the ventricular septal defects were confirmed at necropsy. In one goat a ventricular septal defect was associated with a hypoplastic aorta and in the other, an ectopic ureter opened into the vagina.

The histologic and clinical features of pulmonary histiocytosis X are discussed. The majority of patients are in the third and fourth decades of life. They present with nonspecific respiratory complaints and bilateral reticulonodular infiltrates that can be seen on chest radiographs.
