Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the link between specific genetic variations (SNPs) in the COX-2 gene and the occurrence of external apical root resorption (EARR) in patients after orthodontic treatment.* -
  • Data was collected from 143 orthodontic patients, with analyses focusing on the maxillary central incisors and first mandibular molars, and two SNPs (rs5275 and rs689466) were genotyped using real-time PCR.* -
  • Results show that patients carrying one copy of the G allele for SNP rs5275 have a significant increase in EARR for mandibular molars, suggesting that COX-2 genetic factors may influence the risk of root resorption during orthodontic care.*

This study aimed to evaluate the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in endochondral development-related genes and mandibular condyle shape, size, volume, and symmetry traits. Cone-beam Computed Tomographies and genomic DNA from 118 individuals were evaluated (age range: 15-66 years). Data from twelve 3D landmarks on mandibular condyles were submitted to morphometric analyses including Procrustes fit, principal component analysis, and estimation of centroid sizes and fluctuating asymmetry scores.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated the link between specific genetic polymorphisms in BMP2, BMP4, SMAD6, and RUNX2 and the occurrence of pulp stones (PS) in a group of 117 participants, divided into those with PS (63) and those without (54).
  • - Genetic testing was performed using saliva samples, and various statistical methods were applied to analyze the data, revealing that the SMAD6 gene polymorphisms, particularly rs2119261, were significantly associated with PS.
  • - In contrast, no significant associations were found between PS risk and the genetic variations in BMP2, BMP4, or RUNX2, highlighting the potential role of SMAD6 mutations in the development of pulp stones.

Background: Supernumerary teeth are an alteration of dental developmental and result in the formation of teeth above the usual number. Epidemiologic studies suggested that patients with dentofacial anomalies and their family members may present an increased risk of developing cancer, including female breast cancer and gynecologic cancers. These observations indicate that genetic alterations that result in dental anomalies may be related to cancer development.

An increasing number of systematic reviews (SR) has investigated the association between dental caries and nutritional status in children and adolescents, thus requiring an overview to compile the information in a single piece of evidence. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate and summarize evidence from published SR on the association between dental caries and nutritional status in children and adolescents. A wide search was conducted on May 29, 2023, in six databases (Medline via PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane library, Embase, and the Virtual Health Library - VHL).

The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is an association between inducible in single nucleotide polymorphisms in nitric oxide synthase (rs2297518 and rs2779249) and persistent apical periodontitis. A total of 291 Brazilian subjects were included: 125 with signs/symptoms of persistent apical periodontitis and 166 with root canal-treated teeth exhibiting healthy perirradicular tissues. Endodontically treated patients were followed up after 1 year.

This study aimed to assess whether genetic polymorphisms in MTR and MTRR are potential biomarkers of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in children with caries. A cross-sectional study was designed wherein pairs of parents/caregivers and children (aged two-five years) were selected. Clinical examination was used to detect dental caries, which were classified as low-severity and high-severity caries.

Aim: This study aimed to investigate whether single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the genes encoding 5-HTR2A (5-Hydroxytryptamine (serotonin) receptor 2A) and MTNR1A (melatonin receptor 1A) may contribute to postoperative pain perception after root canal treatment. We hypothesised that SNPs in HTR2A and MTNR1A genes were associated with postoperative pain after root canal treatment.

Methodology: This genetic cohort study enrolled patients with single-rooted teeth diagnosed with pulp necrosis and asymptomatic apical periodontitis before root canal treatment.

Background And Porpuse: Salivary glands sustain collateral damage following radiotherapy (RT) to treat cancers of the head and neck, leading to complications, including xerostomia and hyposalivation. This systematic review (SR) with meta-analysis was performed to determine the effectiveness of bethanechol chloride in preventing salivary gland dysfunction in this context.

Materials And Methods: Medline/Pubmed, Embase, Scopus, LILACS via Portal Regional BVS and Web of Science were searched electronically in accordance with the Cochrane manual and reported PRISMA guidelines.

Purpose: Most individuals experience significant deterioration in their oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in the first few days after tooth extraction. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) and low-level laser therapy (LLLT) protocols on OHRQoL after extraction of lower molars.

Methods: The investigators designed a double-blind, randomized controlled clinical trial study.

Unlabelled: Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is an adjunct to a selective caries removal (SCR) technique for deep caries lesion treatment. The knowledge about chemical and structural changes affecting the remaining dentin surface after the use of this therapy is still unknown.

Objective: to answer the following question: Does the SCR technique in combination with aPDT affect the clinical performance of adhesive restorations in deep carious lesions of primary or permanent teeth?

Study Design: a systematic review was conducted.

Article Synopsis
  • A study evaluated the relationship between genetic variations in TNF-α and Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) in children aged two to five with dental caries.
  • It involved 307 children and utilized the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS) to measure the impact of oral health on their quality of life while also assessing their dental health.
  • The results indicated that children with a specific TNF-α genetic variant (CC genotype) were more likely to experience poorer OHRQoL, particularly in terms of pain, highlighting the potential for using TNF-α as a biomarker for assessing children's oral health needs.

This study aimed to evaluate the association of the variables age, gender, arch position, tooth length, root canal amplitude, and periapical lesion size with the occurrence of postoperative signs and symptoms (pain, tenderness, and edema) and the use of postoperative analgesics following root canal treatment with foraminal enlargement in single-rooted teeth with apical periodontitis. This prospective longitudinal study included 105 patients requiring root canal treatment of maxillary or mandibular single-rooted teeth with periapical lesion. After root canal treatment in a single session, pain intensity and tenderness were recorded daily for 7 days and on days 14 and 30.
