: Sixty-eight percent of service members are living with overweight or obesity, some who may not consult a healthcare provider when they decide to lose weight. Instead, they often turn to weight-loss dietary supplements for self-care solutions. The purpose of this case series study was to examine the label accuracy and quality of select weight-loss dietary supplements sold on or near US military bases across the country.

Uncovering the World of Dietary Supplements and Performance-Enhancing Substances in the Military.

This article highlights key topic areas related to dietary supplements (DSs) and performance-enhancing substances. It also discusses evidence-based resources the medical community can use when discussing high-quality DSs with Servicemembers interested in taking DSs. We briefly overview how DSs are regulated in the United States, discuss problematic categories and issues related to quality, expand upon what are often considered performance-enhancing substances yet sometimes sold as DSs, and then offer solutions to counter the consequences of the dark side of the DS industry.

In addition to disorders of fatty acid metabolism, a relative carnitine deficiency has been reported in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Here we performed an observational study in which food and supplement consumption were collected in an observation period followed by open label administration of a carnitine supplement to determine feasibility of increasing plasma carnitine levels in humans PAH.

Insect-associated microbes, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, can drastically impact host physiology, ecology, and fitness, while many microbes still have no known role. Background: Overdoses and alcohol consumption rose during the pandemic. However, uptake of practices which reduce mortality (eg, medications for opioid use disorder, harm reduction practices) remains insufficient. Provider training and telementoring is needed to ensure sufficient capacity for treating substance use disorders (SUDs) with evidence-based practices.

Label Accuracy of Weight Loss Dietary Supplements Marketed Online With Military Discounts.

Importance: Dietary supplements for weight loss, among the most popular supplement products on the market, are promoted not only for losing weight and shedding fat, but also for added benefits of energy and performance, all packed into 1 capsule with multiple combinations of ingredients. Fraudulent marketing of weight loss supplements, some with exaggerated claims, some that are potentially dangerous, and some that contain illegal ingredients, is ever present, especially through online sources, where multiple manufacturers target service members by offering military discounts.

Objectives: To examine whether select dietary supplements marketed online for weight loss from companies advertising military discounts are accurately labeled according to the Supplement Facts listed ingredients, whether they contain any ingredients prohibited for use in the military, and to qualitatively describe the products' label claims.

The Louisiana pinesnake (Pituophis ruthveni) is considered one of the rarest snakes in North America and was federally listed under the Endangered Species Act in 2018. Captive breeding and reintroduction of zoo-bred hatchlings has been successful, however, limited founders in the captive population and the inability to bring new, wild genes into the captive colony presents a major concern for the conservation of this species. One commonly used tool for detecting 5-methylcytosine (mC) modifications is Tombo, which uses an "Alternative Model" to detect putative modifications from a single sample. We examined direct RNA sequencing data from diverse taxa including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and animals.

The maternally transmitted reproductive manipulator Wolbachia can impact sex ratios of its arthropod host by different mechanisms, ultimately promoting the spread of infection across a population. One of these reproductive phenotypes, parthenogenesis induction (PI), is characterized by the asexual production of female offspring, which in many cases results in an entirely female population. Cases of Wolbachia-mediated PI are most common in the order Hymenoptera, specifically in parasitoid wasps.

Introduction: In Georgia, maternal mortality is relatively high, and Black women are three times as likely to die from pregnancy-related causes as white women. Doulas can improve perinatal health and reduce disparities, but doula accessibility in Georgia is unclear.

Methods: This community-engaged mixed methods study surveyed and interviewed 17 doulas in Georgia.

Spin is a way of reporting that distorts the true findings; we sought to investigate the prevalence of spin in systematic review abstracts on psoriasis treatments and whether study characteristics were associated with spin. There is a significant overlap between HIV infection and substance-use disorders. Dopamine (DA) is the most abundantly upregulated neurotransmitter in methamphetamine abuse, with receptors (DRD1-5) that are expressed by neurons as well as by a large diversity of cell types, including innate immune cells that are the targets of HIV infection, making them responsive to the hyperdopaminergic environment that is characteristic of stimulant drugs. Therefore, the presence of high levels of dopamine may affect the pathogenesis of HIV, particularly in the brain.

Introduction: Poor birth outcomes are more prevalent for Black communities, but strong evidence shows that doula care can improve those outcomes. More evidence is needed to understand racial differences, discrimination, and equity in doula care.

Methods: The current study's objective was to describe the experiences of Black doulas as well as the challenges and facilitators of providing doula care to communities of color in Georgia.

Objectives: To assess the impact of a school start time (SST) delay on adolescent sleep health during the COVID-19 pandemic, and whether there were differences by learning modality.

Methods: Data were collected from a longitudinal study evaluating sleep, education, and health among high school students in Georgia in 2020.
