Four different colored beans (white, red, pinto, and black beans) were investigated for factors affecting iron bioavailability using an in vitro digestion/human Caco-2 cell model. Iron bioavailability from whole beans, dehulled beans, and their hulls was determined. The results show that white beans contained higher levels of bioavailable iron compared to red, pinto, and black beans.

Selenium (Se) plays an indispensable role in human nutrition and has been implicated to have important health benefits, including being a cancer preventative agent. While different forms of Se vary in their anticarcinogenic efficacy, Se-methylselenocysteine (SeMSC) has been demonstrated to be one of the most effective chemopreventative compounds. Broccoli (Brassica oleracea var.

An HPLC method to quantitate phytometallophores (phytosiderophores) exuded from roots of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) growing in nutrient solution culture was developed. 9-Fluorenylmethyl chloroformate (FMOC) derivatives of phytometallophores were separated on a C18 reverse-phase column using a sodium acetate (pH 7.

Late stent thrombosis has not been reported in the absence of prior coronary brachytherapy. We reviewed our experience in 1,855 consecutive patients who received at least one stent and did not receive coronary brachytherapy. Half of all stent thromboses occurred within the first week and nearly 65% (22) occurred within 15 days.

Background: Coronary angiography may not reliably predict whether a stenosis causes exercise-induced ischemia. Intracoronary Doppler ultrasound may enhance diagnostic accuracy by providing a physiological assessment of stenosis severity. The goal of this study was to compare intracoronary Doppler ultrasound with both 201Tl imaging and coronary angiography.

Background: It has been shown that serial teboroxime imaging can rapidly assess coronary perfusion in viable myocardial distributions. However, the myocardial uptake of teboroxime after reperfusion of acutely infarcted myocardium has not been critically evaluated. The study object was to assess whether teboroxime uptake in acutely infarcted myocardium is linearly related to blood flow.

Two-year-old red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.), raised from seed collected at five locations from Maine to North Carolina, were exposed in a greenhouse to either sulphuric or nitric acid mist (median pH 2-85). Exposures were performed three times a day, four days a week over an eleven-week period during the growing season.

Background: Intracoronary thrombosis is an important factor in the pathogenesis of acute complications during percutaneous coronary interventions. The activated coagulation time (ACT) is a simple, reproducible bedside test that has become standard as the means of monitoring the anticoagulant effect of heparin during these procedures. To determine if ACT-adjusted heparin dosing reduces the procedure-related complications of elective PTCA, 1200 patients who underwent nomemergent percutancous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) between January 1, 1988 and February 26, 1992 were studied.

Women are less likely than men to be referred for coronary angiography. It is unclear whether this reflects good clinical judgment or agenda bias. The decision to refer a patient for an invasive evaluation depends upon the prevalence of disease and the population in question, the prognosis of patients with coronary artery disease and the response of these patients of the available therapies.

Objectives: This study attempted 1) to assess the utility of rest measurements of intracoronary blood flow velocity for the physiologic assessment of coronary stenoses before and after right coronary artery angioplasty, and 2) to compare the phasic flow pattern in the right coronary artery proper with the phasic flow pattern in its major branches to the left ventricle.

Background: Previous investigations have demonstrated that a reduction in distal blood flow velocity and a loss of distal diastolic predominant flow are characteristic of physiologically significant stenoses and that these indexes normalize after successful coronary artery dilation. However, these studies were predominantly performed in the left coronary artery.

Nine Yorkshire pigs underwent coronary artery occlusion followed by 2 hours of reperfusion. In five pigs (group A) the occlusion time was 15 minutes and in four pigs (group B) the occlusion time was 1 hour. Teboroxime was administered and images were acquired at baseline, and following occlusion and reperfusion.

Objectives: We sought to assess whether sequential teboroxime imaging can rapidly evaluate vessel patency and identify the coronary artery occluded in patients undergoing balloon occlusion of a coronary artery.

Background: Intravenous thrombolytic therapy results in successful reperfusion of the infarct-related artery in only 50% to 80% of cases. A noninvasive technique to serially evaluate coronary perfusion would identify patients who might benefit from other interventions such as emergency percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, coronary artery bypass grafting or increased intensity of thrombolytic therapy.

A case of a unipolar surgical electrocautery-induced runaway pacemaker is described. The single chamber ventricular pacemaker began firing at 140 beats/min with intermittent capture and the abnormal rhythm persisted after cessation of the electrocautery. Emergent explanation of the pulse generator was required.

The clinical significance of silent ischemia is not fully known. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the presence or absence of angina during a thallium stress test positive for ischemia was independently predictive of an adverse outcome. Two hundred thirty-four consecutive patients with ischemia on a thallium stress test were identified.

Two successive experiments were performed in the greenhouse to test the hypothesis that plant response to the amounts and ratios of sulfuric and nitric acids in rain is affected by the amount of fertilizer added to the growing medium. Radish plants, grown with different levels of N?P?K fertilizer, were given ten 1-h exposures over a 3-week period to simulate acidic rain at pH values from 2.6 to 5.
