Background: There is an increasing awareness that aging of the immune system, or immunosenescence, is a key biological process underlying many of the hallmark diseases of aging and age-related decline broadly. While immunosenescence can be in part due to normal age-related changes in the immune system, emerging evidence posits that viral infections may be biological stressors of the immune system that accelerate the pace of immunosenescence.

Methods: We used a convenience sample of 42 individuals aged 65 years and older to examine correlations between antiviral immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels for 4 human herpesviruses (cytomegalovirus [CMV], herpes simplex virus [types 1 and 2], and Epstein-Barr virus) and multiple indicators of T-cell immunosenescence.

Chemical burns account for a small percentage of burn patients, and there are even fewer burn patients suffering from chemical burns combined with inhalation injury. As chemical substances corrode the airway, which leads to persistent necrotic shedding of the respiratory mucosa and scarring contracture as the airway heals, a proportion of patients develop airway stenosis, requiring more aggressive treatment or even surgery. A 38-year-old female chemical factory worker sustained an inhalation injury due to exposure to reactive substances (liquid and smoke) during production.

As natural nanoparticle, the bacterial outer membrane vesicles (OMV) hold great potential in protein vaccines because of its self-adjuvant properties and good biocompatibility. However, the inherent immunotoxicity seriously hampers the application of OMV as protein antigens delivery carrier. Here, an attenuated OMV was constructed by elimination of the flagella protein from its surface and removal of the phosphate group of LPS at position one via gene-editing strategy.

We tuned the morphology from the needle-like Co(CO)(OH)·0.11HO to the unique Turing-structured CoCO through controlling the amount of glycerol in the solvothermal system, and then synthesized the Turing structure consisting of N-50 %-CoO hollow nanoparticles though the Kirkendall effect during nitriding process, which was applied as a novel bifunctional self-supporting electrode for efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and electrocatalytic NO oxidation reaction (eNOOR). The eNOOR can be not only used as a substitution anode reaction of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to couple with HER for efficient water splitting, but the production of nitrate from eNOOR also provides a strategy for the development of Zn-nitrate battery.
