Trial eligibility, treatment patterns and outcome for venetoclax-based therapy in AML: a prospective cohort study.

Venetoclax (Ven) plus hypomethylating agents are considered standard-of-care for patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) judged ineligible for intensive chemotherapy (IC). Real-world studies complement clinical trials, since patterns of patient selection, treatment-exposure and post-remission management may vary. This prospective observational multi-center study included 209 newly diagnosed IC-ineligible patients with a median age 75 years (interquartile range, 71-81 years).

We report the outcomes of patients with haematological malignancies admitted to ICUs and define pre-ICU prognostic factors for in-hospital mortality. In a retrospective, single-center study, we included all patients with haematologic malignancies admitted to ICUs between 2009 and 2019. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality.

Gilteritinib with or without venetoclax for relapsed/refractory FLT3-mutated acute myeloid leukaemia.

Patients with FLT3-mutated acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) that relapse or are refractory (R/R) to intensive induction have poor outcomes. Gilteritinib has recently become standard-of-care for patients with R/R FLT3-mutated AML. We investigated whether adding venetoclax to gilteritinib (gilt-ven) improves outcomes as compared with gilteritinib monotherapy.

MDS-Related Anemia Is Associated with Impaired Quality of Life but Improvement Is Not Always Achieved by Increased Hemoglobin Level.

Quality of life is impaired in MDS, but the role of hemoglobin level is unclear. To study the Hb-QoL correlation at diagnosis and 1 year later, patients filled out the EQ-5D questionnaire, assessing their mobility, self care, daily activities, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression, using scores of 0 (normal), 1 (mild/moderate), or 2 (poor). They also evaluated their health using a visual analogue scale, scoring from 0 (poor) to 100 (excellent).

Humoral and Cellular Immune Responses of People Living With Human Immunodeficiency Virus After 3 Doses of Messenger RNA BNT162b2 Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Vaccine: A Prospective Cohort Study.

Background: Recent studies have shown good serological and cellular immune responses in people living with human immunodeficiency virus PLWH) after receipt of 2 doses of messenger RNAA (mRNA) severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 vaccine. Data are missing regarding the response after 3 vaccine doses.

Methods: We followed up a group of PLWH who received 3 doses of the mRNA BNT162b2 vaccine and for whom data of humoral immune response after 2 vaccine doses were available.

A Novel Sensory Wave (P25) in Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein-induced Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis Murine Model.

Myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG)-induced experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is a murine model for multiple sclerosis. This model is characterized by chronic and progressive demyelination, leading to impairment of motor function and paralysis. While the outcomes of the disease, including impaired motor function and immunological changes, are well-characterized, little is known about the impact of EAE on the electrophysiology of the motor and sensory systems.

Novel pyrrolidine-aminophenyl-1,4-naphthoquinones: structure-related mechanisms of leukemia cell death.

Novel derivatives of aminophenyl-1,4-naphthoquinones, in which a pyrrolidine group was added to the naphthoquinone ring, were synthesized and investigated for the mechanisms of leukemic cell killing. The novel compounds, TW-85 and TW-96, differ in the functional (methyl or hydroxyl) group at the para-position of the aminophenyl moiety. TW-85 and TW-96 were found to induce concentration- and time-dependent apoptotic and/or necrotic cell death in human U937 promonocytic leukemia cells but only TW-96 could also kill K562 chronic myeloid leukemia cells and CCRF-CEM lymphoblastic leukemia cells.

CuO-Coated Antibacterial and Antiviral Car Air-Conditioning Filters.

The demand for improved indoor air quality, especially during the pandemic of Covid-19, has led to renewed interest in antiviral and antibacterial air-conditioning systems. Here, air filters of vehicles made of nonwoven polyester filter media were sonochemically coated with CuO nanoparticles by a roll-to-roll coating method. The product, aimed at providing commuters with high air quality, showed good stability and mechanical properties and potent activity against and bacteria, H1N1 influenza, and two SARS-CoV-2 variants.

Background: Little is known about vaccine efficacy and sustainability among people with HIV (PWH). We estimated humoral and cellular immune responses postvaccination with BNT162b2 mRNA coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine among PWH in Tel-Aviv Medical Center.

Methods: The vaccine humoral response was evaluated by measuring immunoglobulin G (IgG) titers of antispike receptor-binding domain antibodies (anti-RBD IgG).

Transformation of low-grade follicular lymphoma with partial marginal zone differentiation: Two cases.

Two cases of low-grade follicular lymphoma, with marginal zone differentiation and/or with high proliferation rate in one of them, are reported with transformation into high grade B-cell and B-lymphoblastic lymphomas. The contribution of these features to the transforming process, although previously described, is infrequent, and has not been deciphered to date.

Immunogenicity of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in patients with inborn errors of immunity.

Background: In mid-December 2020, Israel started a nationwide mass vaccination campaign against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In the first few weeks, medical personnel, elderly citizens, and patients with chronic diseases were prioritized. As such, patients with primary and secondary immunodeficiencies were encouraged to receive the vaccine.

Potential role of indolelactate and butyrate in multiple sclerosis revealed by integrated microbiome-metabolome analysis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated disease whose precise etiology is unknown. Several studies found alterations in the microbiome of individuals with MS, but the mechanism by which it may affect MS is poorly understood. Here we analyze the microbiome of 129 individuals with MS and find that they harbor distinct microbial patterns compared with controls.

Excluded versus included patients in a randomized controlled trial of infections caused by carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria: relevance to external validity.

Background: Population external validity is the extent to which an experimental study results can be generalized from a specific sample to a defined population. In order to apply the results of a study, we should be able to assess its population external validity. We performed an investigator-initiated randomized controlled trial (RCT) (AIDA study), which compared colistin-meropenem combination therapy to colistin monotherapy in the treatment of patients infected with carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria.

Kinetics of pre-myelodysplastic syndromes blood values correlate with disease risk and survival.

We reviewed pre-diagnosis clinical data of 420 patients with pathologically confirmed myelodysplastic syndromes (MDSs) presenting with anemia. In 232 patients with yearly pre-diagnosis complete blood counts (CBCs), we also analyzed CBC kinetics in respects to a standardized timepoint in which all patients had similar levels of hemoglobin (Hgb). At the standardized timepoint (last documented 12 > Hgb ≥ 11 g/dL), occurring months-years before diagnosis, median CBC values were Hgb 11.

Safety and efficacy of blinatumomab: a real world data.

Despite improvement in survival of newly diagnosed adult precursor B-acute lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma (B-ALL), the results of relapsed/refractory disease are poor. Blinatumomab, a bispecific monoclonal antibody directed against CD19/CD3 show clinical activity against relapsed/refractory B-ALL and in minimal residual disease (MRD)-positive patients.We report our "real-world" experience with blinatumomab in patients with relapsed/refractory B-ALL.

Incidence rates and clinical characteristics of primary gastrointestinal non-Hodgkin lymphoma: a population study.

Background & Aims: After the rise of lymphoma incidence in the 1990's, there is a paucity of epidemiologic studies describing the characteristics of primary gastrointestinal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (PGIL). This epidemiologic survey aims to identify recent trends in PGIL.

Methods: A retrospective, population-based study describing adult patients with PGIL in the Israeli Negev region between 1998 and 2013.

The prognostic significance of bone marrow involvement in diffuse large B cell lymphoma according to the flow cytometry.

The significance of minimal bone marrow (BM) involvement in diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL), as determined by flow cytometry (FC), is unclear. Patient outcomes were retrospectively analyzed based on their BM biopsy and FC involvement. Eighty-one patients were included, 21 and 51 were positive for biopsy(B+) and FC(FC+) respectively.
