Background: Although male sex is associated with poor prognosis in systemic sclerosis (SSc), it is unclear whether this association is independent of confounding factors such as occupational exposure to toxicants.

Research Question: What is the respective impact of sex and occupational exposure on characteristics of patients with SSc with a focus on lung function decline?

Study Design And Methods: Patients with SSc (n = 210; 55 men) underwent standardized quantitative assessment of occupational exposure through a cumulative exposure score (CES) in a multicenter recruitment retrospective cohort. Association of the CES with patients' characteristics was assessed.

The IARC Monographs: Updated Procedures for Modern and Transparent Evidence Synthesis in Cancer Hazard Identification.

The Monographs produced by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) apply rigorous procedures for the scientific review and evaluation of carcinogenic hazards by independent experts. The Preamble to the IARC Monographs, which outlines these procedures, was updated in 2019, following recommendations of a 2018 expert advisory group. This article presents the key features of the updated Preamble, a major milestone that will enable IARC to take advantage of recent scientific and procedural advances made during the 12 years since the last Preamble amendments.

Compact multichannel infrared camera integrated in an operational detector dewar cooler assembly.

We present an ultracompact infrared cryogenic camera integrated inside a standard Sofradir's detector dewar cooler assembly (DDCA) whose field of view is equal to 120°. The multichannel optical architecture produces four nonredundant images on a single SCORPIO detector with a pixel pitch of 15 μm. This ultraminiaturized optical system brings a very low additional optical and mechanical mass to be cooled in the DDCA: the cool-down time is comparable to an equivalent DDCA without an imagery function.

Trends in work-related mental disorders by sector in France.

Background: Notifications of work-related mental disorders (WRMDs) are increasing while little data are available on trends by industrial sector.

Aims: To assess WRMD notifications and trends from 2001 to 2011 by industrial sector using data collected by the French National Network for Occupational Disease Vigilance and Prevention (RNV3P) network.

Methods: We calculated standardized notification ratios (SNRs) per sector.

Occupational exposure factors for mental and behavioral disorders at work: The FOREC thesaurus.

Background: Mental disorders in the workplace are a major public health problem. Knowledge of the impact of the psychosocial work environment on mental and behavioral disorders can assist occupational physicians in the identification and description of occupational risk situations, and help to define priority actions. However, no classification for occupational exposure factors is currently available.

Evaluation of a HgCdTe e-APD based detector for 2 μm CO DIAL application.

Benefiting from close to ideal amplification properties (high gain, low dark current, and low excess noise factor), HgCdTe electron initiated avalanche photodiode (e-APD) technology exhibits state of the art sensitivity, thus being especially relevant for applications relying on low light level detection, such as LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging). In addition, the tunable gap of the HgCdTe alloy enables coverage of the short wavelength infrared (SWIR) and especially the 2 μm spectral range. For these two reasons, a HgCdTe e-APD based detector is a promising candidate for future differential absorption LIDAR missions targeting greenhouse gas absorption bands in SWIR.

Organizing pneumonia and occupational and environmental risk factors: a case-control study.

Objectives: A single-center case-control study was carried out to investigate the relationship between occupational and environmental exposure and organizing pneumonia (OP).

Methods: Thirty-seven cases of OP, including 25 cases of cryptogenic OP, and 111 controls were included. Occupational exposure was assessed retrospectively by an industrial hygienist and an occupational physician, through semi-quantitative estimates of exposure.

[French shift workers seen at health centres have an increased risk of lipid disorders].

Aims: To describe cardiovascular risk factors and metabolic disturbances in a French population including shift workers and study whether possible changes were noticeable after non-shift to shift work transition within the last five years.

Methods: The study population included 4764 attendees of two health examinations (5 years apart), between January 1996 and October 2008, in 11 health examination centres. Clinical, biological and metabolic factors together with their changes over a five-year period were compared between attendees who kept a non-shift daytime job, those who kept working shift and those who switched from non-shift daytime to shift work over the last 5 years.

Occupational contact urticaria: lessons from the French National Network for Occupational Disease Vigilance and Prevention (RNV3P).

Background: Occupational contact urticaria (OCU) is an occupational contact dermatitis that can cause serious health consequences and disability at work.

Objectives: To describe OCU and its temporal trends by the main causal agents and activity sectors in a nationwide scheme in France.

Methods: Using data from the French National Network for Occupational Disease Vigilance and Prevention (RNV3P), we described OCU reported during the period 2001-10 and analysed the temporal trends of OCU and OCU attributed to the most frequent agents over the study period.

Reduction of material mass of optical component in cryogenic camera by using high-order Fresnel lens on a thin germanium substrate.

We designed a compact infrared cryogenic camera using only one lens mounted inside the detector area. In the field of cooled infrared imaging systems, the maximal detector area is determined by the dewar. It is generally a sealed and cooled environment dedicated to the infrared quantum detector.

Primary Sjögren's syndrome and occupational risk factors: A case-control study.

Objectives: A case-control study was carried out to investigate the relation between primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) and occupational exposure.

Methods: One hundred seventy five cases of pSS followed up into the internal medicine departments of three French university hospitals from 2010 to 2013 were included. For each case, two age and gender matched controls were selected during the same period in the same departments.

[Promote better nutritional behaviours among shift workers with night shift].

Aim: Shift work, especially including a night shift, is associated with degradation of physical, social and psychosocial health as well as poor well-being. Food imbalance and low physical activity contributed to the negative effects on health. Our objective was to promote a healthier nutritional behaviour according to the French national nutrition and health program recommendations (PNNS).

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis and major allergens in France: temporal trends for the period 2001-2010.

Background: Occupational allergic contact dermatitis (OACD) is one of the most common occupational skin diseases in developed countries, but data about its temporal trends in incidence remain sparse.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to describe OACD trends in terms of industrial activities and main causal agents in France over the period 2001-2010.

Materials And Methods: Data were collected from the French National Network of Occupational Disease Vigilance and Prevention (RNV3P, Réseau National de Vigilance et de Prévention des Pathologies Professionnelles).

Deprivation and health risk indicators in full-time permanent workers.

Background: Association between deprivation and health is well established, particularly among unemployed or fixed-term contract or temporary contract subjects. This study aimed to assess if this relationship existed as well in full-time permanent workers.

Methods: Biometrical, biological, behavioural and psychosocial health risk indicators and an individual deprivation score, the Evaluation of Precarity and Inequalities in Health Examination Centres score, were recorded from January 2007 to June 2008, in 34 905 full-time permanent workers aged 18-70 years, all volunteers for a free health examination.

Occupational asthma and occupational rhinitis: the united airways disease model revisited.

Objectives: Whereas accumulating evidence indicates close associations between rhinitis and asthma, little is known about the relationships between occupational rhinitis (OR) and occupational asthma (OA). This study analyses the prevalence of OR associated with OA, globally and according to the various causal agents, and investigates the temporal relationships between these two conditions.

Methods: Data on incident cases of OA (2008-2010) were collected through the French national occupational disease surveillance and prevention network, using a standardised form including information on occupation, causal agents, presence of OR, and respective dates of occurrence of rhinitis and asthma.

Compact infrared cryogenic wafer-level camera: design and experimental validation.

We present a compact infrared cryogenic multichannel camera with a wide field of view equal to 120°. By merging the optics with the detector, the concept is compatible with both cryogenic constraints and wafer-level fabrication. The design strategy of such a camera is described, as well as its fabrication and integration process.

Programmed health surveillance and detection of emerging diseases in occupational health: contribution of the French national occupational disease surveillance and prevention network (RNV3P).

Objective: The French national occupational disease surveillance and prevention network (RNV3P) includes the 30 occupational disease consultation centres in university hospitals to which patients are referred for potentially work-related diseases, and an occupational health service. The aim of this work is to demonstrate the contribution of RNV3P to national health surveillance.

Methods: Data from consultations are recorded in standardised occupational health reports and coded using international or national classifications.

[How to discuss death with a dying child: can a story help?].

Is it necessary--and possible--to discuss death with a terminally ill child? How should one approach the subject? A recent Swedish study demonstrates the benefits for parents who discuss with their child his or her imminent death, and examines the ways in which caregivers can help such parents. The mother of one child treated in our unit recently wrote a story 48 hours before her child's death. The story served to broach a number of questions often raised by dying children and their families: fear of the unknown, of being replaced, the inevitability of death, grief and fear of being forgotten.

[Psychosocial risk].

Psychosocial risk is an emerging hazard in occupational health, also present in the agricultural sector with specific particularities. It is not limited to occupational stress, of which the prevalence is 28 percent in Europe, but also involves the risk of mental distress associated with the professional activity. The French and European regulations now require that work conditions, work organization, as well as mental health be taken into consideration in occupational risk assessment.

Five-year predictive factors of type 2 diabetes in men with impaired fasting glucose.

Apolipoprotein E genotype and plasma lipid levels in Caucasian diabetic patients.

Objective: Apo E polymorphism has been shown to affect lipid profiles in non-diabetic and diabetic populations. We evaluated the relationship between Apo E phenotype and fasting lipid plasma levels in type 2 diabetes patients.

Methods: Two hundred and ten French type 2 diabetic patients (115 men and 95 women) without any lipid lowering drugs were studied.
