Background And Study Aims: Several studies have suggested that nitroglycerin promotes pancreatic drainage and thereby helps to prevent pancreatitis occurring after endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERC). We performed a multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of intravenous nitroglycerin for preventing acute pancreatitis in moderate- to high-risk patients undergoing ERC.

Background: Compressive hematoma after thyroidectomy is a rare complication (1%) but can potentially be severe. The aim of this study was to search for risk factors, in particular the use of anticoagulants or antiplatelet medication, and to see if the delay of hematoma formation would require 1-day surgery performed in a careful manner.

Materials And Methods: Retrospective review of 6,830 patients undergoing thyroidectomy in a single institution (1991 to 2006) identified 70 patients with hematomas requiring reoperation.

The aim of this study was to carry out a statistical analysis of the Banister model to verify how useful it is in monitoring the training programmes of elite swimmers. The accuracy, the ill-conditioning and the stability of this model were thus investigated. Nitrate uptake and nitrite release by tomato roots in response to anoxia.

Excised root systems of tomato plants (early fruiting stage, 2nd flush) were subjected to a gradual transition from normoxia to anoxia by seating the hydroponic root medium while aeration was stopped. Oxygen level in the medium and respiration rate decreased and reached very low values after 12 h of treatment, indicating that the tissues were anoxic thereafter. Nitrate loss from the nutrient solution was strongly stimulated by anoxia (after 26 h) concomitantly with a release of nitrite starting only after 16 h of treatment.

Recently, we have shown that the biosynthesis of androstenol, a potential endogenous ligand for the orphan receptors constitutive androstane receptor and pregnane-X-receptor, requires the presence of enzymes of the steroidogenic pathway, such as 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, 5 alpha-reductase and 3 alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase. In this report, we examine at the molecular level whether the enzyme 17 alpha-hydroxylase/17,20-lyase (P450c17), which possesses dual 17 alpha-hydroxylase and 17,20-lyase activities and catalyzes the production of precursors for glucocorticoids and sex steroids, is also able to catalyze the formation of a third class of active steroids, 16-ene steroids (including androstenol). The role of components of the P450 complex is also assessed.

Human type 1 estrogen sulfotransferase: catecholestrogen metabolism and potential involvement in cancer promotion.

Using purified human type 1 estrogen sulfotransferase (hEST1), we show that the best substrate for this enzyme is 2-hydroxy-catecholestrogen. The enzyme also catalyzes the transformation of 4-hydroxy-estrogens and 16-hydroxy-estrogens, but with a lower affinity. We also present evidence to indicate that estrogen sulfotransferase may play a role in processes other than the detoxification and elimination of steroids.

Pigs are not a reliable experimental model in the study of the haemodynamic and respiratory effects of CO2 pneumoperitoneum.

Background: Haemodynamic and respiratory effects of a CO2 pneumoperitoneum (intra-abdominal pressure = 12 mmHg) associated to a head-up position(15 degrees ) were studied in 20 pigs using a Swan-Ganz catheter and the Single Breath Test for CO2. The pneumoperitoneum induced a moderate rise in mean arterial pressure (+17%) (P<0.001) without any variation in heart rate, cardiac output and systemic vascular resistances.

Comparative biosynthetic pathway of androstenol and androgens.

It has been shown recently that androstenol and androstanol could modulate gene expression through the nuclear orphan receptors CAR (constitutive androstane receptor) and PXR (pregnane X receptor). Although, in the pig, androstenol is produced in high amounts and is active as a pheromone, its role in the human is ill defined. Androstenol possesses a structure similar to that of androgens, with the exception that it does not possess an oxygen at position 17 that is crucial for androgenic and estrogenic activity.
