Effects of ULTRAfiltration vs. DIureticS on clinical, biohumoral and haemodynamic variables in patients with deCOmpensated heart failure: the ULTRADISCO study.

Aims: To evaluate the clinical, biohumoral, and haemodynamic effects of ultrafiltration vs. intravenous diuretics in patients with decompensated heart failure (HF). Signs and symptoms of volume overload are often present in these patients and standard therapy consists primarily of intravenous diuretics.

The ratio R(τμ)(Υ(1S))=Γ(Υ(1S)→τ+ τ-)/Γ(Υ(1S)→μ+ μ-) is measured using a sample of (121.8±1.2)×10(6)Υ(3S) events recorded by the BABAR detector.

Cross-bridge properties in single intact frog fibers studied by fast stretches.

Cross-bridges properties were measured under different experimental conditions by applying fast stretches to activated skeletal frog muscle fiber to -forcibly detach the cross-bridge ensemble. This allowed to measure the tension needed to detach the cross-bridges, P(c), and the sarcomere elongation at the rupture force, L(c). These two parameters are expected to be correlated with cross-bridges number (P(c)) and their mean extension (L(c)).

Evolutionary lineages of nickel hyperaccumulation and systematics in European Alysseae (Brassicaceae): evidence from nrDNA sequence data.

Background And Aims: Nickel (Ni) hyperaccumulation is a rare form of physiological specialization shared by a small number of angiosperms growing on ultramafic soils. The evolutionary patterns of this feature among European members of tribe Alysseae (Brassicaceae) are investigated using a phylogenetic approach to assess relationships among Ni hyperaccumulators at the genus, species and below-species level.

Search for a low-mass higgs boson in Upsilon(3S)-->gammaA(0), A(0)-->tau(+)tau(-) at BABAR.

We search for a light Higgs boson A0 in the radiative decay Upsilon(3S)-->gammaA(0), A(0)-->tau+tau-, tau+-->e+nu(e)nu(tau), or tau+-->mu+nu(mu)nu(tau). The data sample contains 122x10(6) Upsilon(3S) events recorded with the BABAR detector. We find no evidence for a narrow structure in the studied tau+tau- invariant mass region of 4.

A limit on the variation of the speed of light arising from quantum gravity effects.

A cornerstone of Einstein's special relativity is Lorentz invariance-the postulate that all observers measure exactly the same speed of light in vacuum, independent of photon-energy. Measurement of semileptonic B decays into orbitally excited charmed mesons.

We present a study of B decays into semileptonic final states containing charged and neutral D1(2420) and D_{2};{*}(2460). The analysis is based on a data sample of 208 fb;{-1} collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at SLAC. With a simultaneous fit to four different decay chains, the semileptonic branching fractions are extracted from measurements of the mass difference Deltam=m(D;{**})-m(D) distributions.

Mechanical properties of intact single fibres from wild-type and MLC/mIgf-1 transgenic mouse muscle.

The effects of overexpression of the local form of insulin like growth factor-1 (mIgf-1) on skeletal muscle were investigated by comparing the mechanical properties of single intact fibres from the flexor digitorum brevis of wild-type (WT) and (MLC/mIgf-1) transgenic mice (TG)at 21-24 degrees C. Isolated single fibres were clean enough to measure accurately the sarcomere length. The parameters investigated were: tetanic absolute and specific force, the force-velocity relationship, and the sarcomere length-tension relationship.

New direct contact approach to evaluate soil genotoxicity using the Vicia faba micronucleus test.

A method to assess micronucleus (MN) induction in Vicia faba roots by direct contact exposure to a solid matrix was developed. The procedure comprised a 5-d germination period, as in the well-known method using aqueous extracts. However, the seeds were here sown directly into the test soil whereas a culture period is necessary before exposing seedlings to a liquid medium.

From conventional activated sludge to alternate oxic/anoxic process: the optimisation of winery wastewater treatment.

The paper deals with the results obtained as nitrogen removal and energy savings in a wastewater treatment plant located in the Province of Trento where the vineyards grow on about 1,500 ha (19% of total vineyards of the Province). In the plant the municipal and pre-treated winery wastewater were co-treated. The optimal effluent quality and the reduction of energy consumption were achieved changing the total oxidation process to an alternate cycles (AC) one and applying a remote control system for three months.

Improved limits on lepton-flavor-violating tau decays to lphi, lrho, lK, and lK.

We search for the neutrinoless, lepton-flavor-violating tau decays tau- -->l-}V0, where l is an electron or muon and V0 is a vector meson reconstructed as phi-->K+K-, rho-->pi+pi-, K-->K+pi-, K[over ]-->K-pi+. The analysis has been performed using 451 fb-1 of data collected at an e+e- center-of-mass energy near 10.58 GeV with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage rings.

Direct CP, lepton flavor, and isospin asymmetries in the decays B-->K(*)l+l-.

We measure branching fractions and integrated rate asymmetries for the rare decays B-->K(*)l+l-, where l+l- is either e+e- or micro+micro-, using a sample of 384x10(6) BB events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+e- collider. We find no evidence for direct CP or lepton-flavor asymmetries. However, for dilepton masses below the J/psi resonance, we find evidence for unexpectedly large isospin asymmetries in both B-->Kl+l- and B-->K*l+l- which differ, respectively, by 3.

Improved measurement of B+ --> rho+ rho0 and determination of the quark-mixing phase angle alpha.

We present improved measurements of the branching fraction B, the longitudinal polarization fraction f{L}, and the direct CP asymmetry A{CP} in the B meson decay channel B;{+}-->rho;{+}rho;{0}. The data sample was collected with the BABAR detector at SLAC. The results are B(B;{+}-->rho;{+}rho;{0})=(23.

Thyroid hypoplasia as a cause of congenital hypothyroidism in Williams syndrome.

In the Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS), disorders of the thyroid function and morphology have been reported and programs of thyroid screening and surveillance are recommended. However, the frequency of biochemical thyroid assessment, particularly in the first year of life, is being debated. In this report we describe an infant with WBS and congenital hypothyroidism, due to an important thyroid hypoplasia.

Measurements of B --> {pi,eta,eta;{'}}lnu_{l} branching fractions and determination of |V_{ub}| with semileptonically tagged B mesons.

We report measurements of branching fractions for the decays B-->Plnu_{l}, where P are the pseudoscalar charmless mesons pi;{-}, pi;{0}, eta and eta;{'}, based on 348 fb;{-1} of data collected with the BABAR detector, using B0 and B+ mesons found in the recoil of a second B meson decaying as B-->D;{(*)}lnu_{l}. Curcumin protects cardiac cells against ischemia-reperfusion injury: effects on oxidative stress, NF-kappaB, and JNK pathways.

In this study we explored the effects of curcumin in cardiac cells subjected to a protocol simulating ischemia-reperfusion (IR). Curcumin (10 microM) was administered before ischemia (pretreatment) or at the moment of reperfusion (posttreatment) and its effects were compared to those produced by a reference antioxidant (Trolox) with an equal antioxidant capacity. IR cardiac cells showed clear signs of oxidative stress, impaired mitochondrial activity, and a marked development of both necrotic and apoptotic processes; at the same time, increases in NF-kappaB nuclear translocation and JNK phosphorylation were observed.

Measurement of the branching fractions of exclusive _B-->D(*)(pi)l-_nu l decays in events with a fully reconstructed B meson.

We report a measurement of the branching fractions for _B-->D(*)(pi)l- _nu(l) decays based on 341.1 fb(-1) of data collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II e+ e- storage rings. Events are tagged by fully reconstructing one of the B mesons in a hadronic decay mode.

Rationale: Antidepressant medications are effective only in a subpopulation of patients with depression, and some patients respond to certain drugs, but not others. The biological bases for these clinical observations remain unexplained.

Objective: To investigate individual differences in response to antidepressants, we have examined the effects of the norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor desipramine (DMI) and the selective serotonin reutake inhibitor fluoxetine (FLU) in the forced swim test (FST) in rats that differ in their emotional behavior.
