Importance: A multicenter randomized clinical trial (RCT) showed a lung recruitment maneuver using high-frequency oscillatory ventilation just before surfactant administration (ie, intubate-recruit-surfactant-extubate [IN-REC-SUR-E]) improved the efficacy of treatment compared with the standard intubate-surfactant-extubate (IN-SUR-E) technique without increasing the risk of adverse neonatal outcomes.

Objective: To examine follow-up outcomes at corrected postnatal age (cPNA) 2 years of preterm infants previously enrolled in an RCT and treated with IN-REC-SUR-E or IN-SUR-E in 35 tertiary neonatal intensive care units.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This was a follow-up study of infants recruited into the primary RCT from 2015 to 2018 at 35 tertiary neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in Italy.

Speech and language differences have long been described as important characteristics of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Linguistic abnormalities range from prosodic differences in pitch, intensity, and rate of speech, to language idiosyncrasies and difficulties with pragmatics and reciprocal conversation. Heterogeneity of findings and a reliance on qualitative, subjective ratings, however, limit a full understanding of linguistic phenotypes in autism.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the effectiveness of two surfactant administration methods—INtubate-RECruit-SURfactant-Extubate (IN-REC-SUR-E) and less invasive surfactant administration (LISA)—on improving BPD-free survival in preterm infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS).
  • A total of 382 preterm infants, born at 24-27 weeks' gestation and not intubated at birth, will be randomly assigned to either method within the first 24 hours of life. The primary outcome being measured is a combination of death or bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) at 36 weeks' postmenstrual age.

Article Synopsis
  • Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is essential for screening athletes, particularly those under 40 with symptoms or family histories related to cardiac issues, as well as in follow-up cases of cardiovascular disease.
  • It is a cost-effective imaging tool for assessing heart changes from intense training (the athlete's heart) and for identifying serious conditions that could lead to sudden cardiac death, such as cardiomyopathies.
  • An expert opinion from the Italian Society of Sports Cardiology highlights scenarios for TTE use, differentiating between normal and abnormal heart adaptations, and recommends a standardized dataset for reporting TTE findings in sports cardiology.

Background - Rationale: Tsetse flies are obligate bloodfeeders that occur exclusively in Sub-Saharan Africa, where they are the vectors of trypanosomes causing HAT (human African trypanosomiasis) and AAT (African animal trypanosomiasis). In Chad, tsetse flies occur only in the most southern part of the country because of its favorable bioclimatic conditions. However, despite the importance of HAT and AAT in this country, very little is known about the current tsetse distribution, in particular its northern limit, which is of key importance for the surveillance of these diseases.

Terpenes and pentene dimers are less studied volatile organic compounds (VOCs) but are associated with specific features of extra virgin olive oils (EVOOs). This study aimed to analyze mono- and sesquiterpenes and pentene dimers of Italian monovarietal EVOOs over 3 years (14 cultivars, 225 samples). A head space-solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) method recently validated was used for terpene and pentene dimer quantitation.

Certain food by-products, including not-good-for-sale apples and pomegranate peels, are rich in bioactive molecules that can be collected and reused in food formulations. Their extracts, rich in pectin and antioxidant compounds, were obtained using hydrodynamic cavitation (HC), a green, efficient, and scalable extraction technique. The extracts were chemically and physically characterized and used in gluten-free and vegan cookie formulations to replace part of the flour and sugar to study whether they can mimic the role of these ingredients.

The first group of anionic noble-gas hydrides with the general formula HNgBeO (Ng = Ar, Kr, Xe, Rn) is predicted through MP2, Coupled-Cluster, and Density Functional Theory computations employing correlation-consistent atomic basis sets. We derive that these species are stable with respect to the loss of H, H, BeO, and BeO, but unstable with respect to Ng + HBeO. The energy barriers of the latter process are, however, high enough to suggest the conceivable existence of the heaviest HNgBeO species as metastable in nature.

The production of olive oil has important economic repercussions in Mediterranean countries but also a considerable impact on the environment. This production generates enormous quantities of waste and by-products, which can be exploited as new raw materials to obtain innovative ingredients and therefore make the olive production more sustainable. In a previous study, we decided to foster olive seeds by generating two protein hydrolysates using food-grade enzymes, alcalase (AH) and papain (PH).

A head space-solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometery (HS-SPME-GC-MS) method for the simultaneous analysis of pentene dimers from lipoxygenase (LOX) pathway, monoterpenes, and sesquiterpenes in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) was proposed. A Doehlert design was performed; the conditions of the HS-SPME preconcentration step (extraction temperature, extraction time, sample amount, and desorption time) were optimized by response surface methodology, allowing defining the method operable design region. A quantitative method was set up using the multiple internal standard normalization approach: four internal standards were used, and the most suitable one was selected for area normalization of each external standard.
