Background: The use of angioembolization as a first approach for treating severe, blunt splenic injuries has increased recently, yet evidence showing its superiority to immediate splenectomy is lacking. We compared the prognosis of angioembolization versus splenectomy in patients presenting hemodynamically unstable with high-grade, image-confirmed, blunt splenic injuries in a nationally representative dataset.
Methods: We queried the 2017-2022 Trauma Quality Improvement Program database for adults with blunt splenic injury abbreviated injury scale = 4-5, with arrival systolic blood pressure <90 mm Hg, and treated with either angioembolization or splenectomy <6 hours of arrival after a computed tomography scan.
The use of synthetic antigen-presenting cells to activate and expand engineered T cells for the treatment of cancers typically results in therapies that are suboptimal in effectiveness and durability. Here we describe a high-throughput microfluidic system for the fabrication of synthetic cells mimicking the viscoelastic and T-cell-activation properties of antigen-presenting cells. Compared with rigid or elastic microspheres, the synthetic viscoelastic T-cell-activating cells (SynVACs) led to substantial enhancements in the expansion of human CD8 T cells and to the suppression of the formation of regulatory T cells.

Methods: RICH LIFE (Reducing Inequities in Care of Hypertension: Lifestyle Improvement for Everyone) was a 2-arm, cluster randomized trial comparing the effect on blood pressure (BP) control (systolic BP ≤140 mm Hg, diastolic BP ≤90 mm Hg), patient activation, and disparities in BP control of 2 multilevel interventions, standard of care plus (SCP) and collaborative care/stepped care (CC/SC). SCP included BP measurement standardization, audit and feedback, and equity-leadership training.

Methods: To identify studies reporting quantitative OCT results, we performed a PubMed search for the terms "quantitative" and "optical coherence tomography" from 2015 to 2017. Corresponding authors of the identified publications were invited to provide feedback on the initial APOSTEL recommendations via online surveys following the principle of a modified Delphi method.
Background and Purpose- The observation that smokers with stroke could have better outcome than nonsmokers led to the term "smoking paradox." The controversy of such a complex claim has not been fully settled, even though different case mix was noted. Analyses were conducted on 2 independent data sets to evaluate and determine whether such a paradox truly exists.

Objective: Our objective was to investigate the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT).
Methods: The Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database was used to conduct a retrospective cohort analysis. The cohort study consisted of 1165 newly diagnosed HT patients and 4660 matched controls (non-HT patients) from 2000 to 2010.
Purpose: This retrospective cohort study investigated the association between epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) polymorphisms and clinical outcomes in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients treated with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-based chemotherapy.
Methods: We genotyped 3 EGFR polymorphisms including R497K, G-216T, and the (CA)n repeat, among 499 histologically confirmed CRC patients who had received 5-FU-based chemotherapy after surgery between 1995 and 2001. Survival analyses of EGFR polymorphisms were performed by the log rank test and Kaplan-Meier curves.
Using Zγ candidate events collected by the CDF detector at the Tevatron Collider, we search for potential anomalous (non-standard-model) couplings between the Z boson and the photon. Zγ couplings vanish at tree level and are heavily suppressed at higher orders; hence any evidence of couplings indicates new physics.
