Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), a consequence of peripheral nerve fiber dysfunction or degeneration, continues to be a dose-limiting and debilitating side effect during and/or after cancer chemotherapy. Paclitaxel, a taxane commonly used to treat breast, lung, and ovarian cancers, causes CIPN in 59-78% of cancer patients. Novel interventions are needed due to the current lack of effective CIPN treatments.

Background: Although the benefits of statins accrue over time, treatment discontinuation is common. Examining the patterns of statin discontinuation, reinitiation, and persistence after reinitiation among Medicare beneficiaries after hospital discharge for a myocardial infarction may help increase statin use in high-risk patients.

Methods And Results: Medicare beneficiaries with a statin fill claim within 30 days after hospital discharge for myocardial infarction in 2007 to 2012 (n=158 795) were followed for 182 days post-discharge to identify discontinuation, defined as 60 continuous days without statins available.

Mouse embryonic stem cells derived from the epiblast contribute to the somatic lineages and the germline but are excluded from the extra-embryonic tissues that are derived from the trophectoderm and the primitive endoderm upon reintroduction to the blastocyst. Here we report that cultures of expanded potential stem cells can be established from individual eight-cell blastomeres, and by direct conversion of mouse embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells. Remarkably, a single expanded potential stem cell can contribute both to the embryo proper and to the trophectoderm lineages in a chimaera assay.

Phosphorus (P) bioavailability often limits gasoline biodegradation in calcareous cold-region soils. One possible method to increase P bioavailability in such soils is the addition of citrate. Citrate addition at the field scale may increase hydrocarbon degradation by: (i) enhancing inorganic and organic P dissolution and desorption, (ii) increasing hydrocarbon bioavailability, and/or (iii) stimulating microbial activity.

Utilization of bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) for large-scale applications is restricted by low productivity in static cultures and by the high cost of the medium. Fiber sludge, a waste stream from pulp and paper mills, was enzymatically hydrolyzed to sugar, which was used for the production of BNC by the submerged cultivation of . Compared with a synthetic glucose-based medium, the productivity of purified BNC from the fiber sludge hydrolysate using shake-flasks was enhanced from 0.

Nanometer-scale chirality has gained significant interest from different research fields due to its fundamental importance in nature and living matter. In this study, we design and synthesize chiral penicillamine-capped selenium nanoparticles (l-/d-Pen@Se NPs) that can act as a novel class of chiral amyloid-β (Aβ) inhibitors. In this work, d-Pen@Se NPs demonstrate higher inhibition efficiency, as well as ameliorate cognition and memory impairments.

Article Synopsis
  • A study compared endorectal ultrasonography (US) and shear-wave elastography (SWE) to determine which is better for staging rectal tumors before surgery, involving 70 patients with confirmed rectal adenocarcinomas or adenomas.
  • Results showed that SWE provided higher accuracy in detecting tumor stiffness, with its diagnostic concordance rate with pathologic stage at 95.7%, compared to 75.7% for endorectal US.
  • The analysis concluded that SWE is a more effective method for preoperatively staging rectal tumors, particularly highlighted by a significant area under the curve (AUC) in assessing tumor stiffness.

Surgical resection of early stage nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is necessary for cure. However, rates of postoperative bacterial pneumonias remain high and may confer an increased risk for metastasis. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) mediate the inflammatory cascade by recognizing microbial products at the surface of numerous cell types in the lung; however, little is known about how host TLRs influence NSCLC metastasis.

Saponins are a diverse family of naturally occurring plant triterpene or steroid glycosides that have a wide range of biological activities. They have been shown to permeabilize membranes and in some cases membrane disruption has been hypothesized to involve saponin/cholesterol complexes. We have examined the interaction of steroidal saponin 1688-1 with lipid membranes that contain cholesterol and have a mixture of liquid-ordered (L) and liquid-disordered (L) phases as a model for lipid rafts in cellular membranes.
