Purpose: The aim of the present work was to evaluate the knowledge and prescriptive habits of clinicians involved in the management of chronic non cancer pain (CNCP), with a special focus on the use of opioids.

Methods: A Delphi method was used. A Board of specialists elaborated and discussed a series of statements, based on available literature and personal clinical expertise, about particularly controversial topics on pain pathophysiology and treatment.

Unlabelled: We searched for pre-junctional inhibitory muscarinic receptors in isolated bovine trachealis strips and bronchial rings. Electric stimulation (ES)-induced tritiated acetylcholine ([(3)H]-ACh)-release and isometric contractions were determined in muscles incubated with the non-selective muscarinic agonist pilocarpine, the non-selective muscarinic antagonist atropine, the selective M(2)-receptor antagonists methoctramine and gallamine, or the selective M(4)-receptor antagonist PD102807. Electric field stimulation (EFS)-induced isometric contractile responses were assessed in trachealis strips and bronchial rings treated with 10(-9)-10(-5)M methoctramine, gallamine or PD102807.

Aim: The authors performed a prospective study in a series of patients undergoing combined general and epidural anaesthesia for major abdominal surgery in order to define if the epidural catheter inserted for postoperative analgesia induced in the short-term (7-8 postoperative days) any cytopathologically appreciable inflammatory response.

Methods: From April to September 2001, 20 consecutive patients undergoing combined general and epidural anaesthesia for major abdominal surgery at the National Cancer Research Institute and Villa Scassi Hospital (Genoa), were recruited after obtaining Institutional Ethics Committee approval and written consent from the patients. The standard technique for epidural anaesthesia was adopted.
