Forum: The Past, Present, and Futures of Modern British History.

For the first issue of the renamed journal, Modern British History co-editor Erik Linstrum convened a group of scholars to reflect on the past, present, and possible futures of the field. The resulting contributions make no claim to provide a comprehensive or representative survey. Rather, they offer a variety of perspectives on where modern British history has been and where it might be going.

Slow Workers: Labelling and Labouring in Britain, c. 1909-1955.

This article surveys the experiences of historical actors labelled 'mentally defective' and 'mentally handicapped' in Britain in the first half of the twentieth century. It decentres institutions and experiences of segregation, and instead foregrounds employment as a way to historicise and make visible the experiences of individuals with intellectual impairments who lived in communities. The article discusses significant opportunities for paid employment, both formal and informal, for disabled people.

Carcinosarcoma of the ovary.

We report our experience in the management of patients with carcinosarcoma of the ovary, a rare but aggressive variant of ovarian cancer. Forty patients were treated at a single centre, which is the largest reported series. The median age at diagnosis was 65 years (range 45-86) and the median Karnofsky performance (KP) status was 70.

CI-921: an analog of amsacrine with experimental activity against solid tumors.

CI-921, a 4,5-disubstituted analog of amsacrine, has been selected for clinical testing because of its experimental activity in vitro and in vivo against solid tumors as well as leukemias. In studies conducted by Baguley and co-workers, CI-921 demonstrated activity against Lewis lung carcinoma in vivo, producing marked increases in life span and a high proportion of 60-day survivors. An intermittent schedule of administration was more effective than a daily X 5 or daily X 9 schedule.
