Examination of 4185 men aged 30 to 59 years, carried out within the framework of investigations into multifactorial prevention of coronary heart disease enabled one to establish that the number of tobacco-smokers among that group men amounts to 45.1%. The percentage of tobacco-smokers appreciably decreases with age.

Seventy males aged 30-59 years who had no signs of coronary heart disease, as evidenced by the epidemiological criteria, and other risk factors were examined. The oxygen supply during exercise was comparatively assessed in relation to smoking. It was found that there were no significant differences in physical fitness parameters in terms of the volume of performed work, in the power of threshold exercise, and respective heart rate in smokers and non-smokers.

The authors studied the incidence of smoking among 20-69 years old males and its relation to ischemic heart disease. Ischemic heart disease morbidity and intermittent claudication was highest in males who have been smoking for more than 30 years. Statistical data indicate that the age of beginning of smoking is of more importance in the development of ischemic heart disease as compared with the duration of smoking.

The method of dietetic interview was used in a strictly standardized epidemiological investigation of a random sample of males aged from 30 to 59 years (n-2537) in Kiev. A dependence has been revealed between the use of alcohol and disorders in the character of nutrition unfavourable in respect to coronary heart disease. A relationship has been established between the alcohol use and the incidence rate of such risk factors of coronary heart disease as hyperlipoproteinemia, excessive body mass, smoking, and the incidence of myocardial infarction.
