Background: Propionic acid (PA) is an intermediate product of metabolism of intestinal bacteria and may protect the intestinal barrier from disruption. The aim of the study was to investigate the apoptotic and proliferative processes in the small intestine (SI) of rats with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) on the background of metformin monotherapy and its combination with PA.

Methods: Male Wistar rats were divided: 1) control; 2) T2DM (3-month high-fat diet followed by streptozotocin injection of 25 mg/kg of body weight); 3) T2DM + metformin (60 mg/kg, 14 days, orally); 4) T2DM + PA (60 mg/kg, 14 days, orally); 5) T2DM + PA + metformin.

Many complications associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are closely linked with the generation of reactive species or free radicals leading to oxidative/nitrosative stress. Background: Despite the tremendous progress made in advancing laboratory medicine in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), inadequate quality management systems (QMSs) remain a problem and barrier to provision of reliable laboratory services in resource-limited settings. Therefore, it is useful to study the experience of medical laboratories in LMICs that have successfully implemented QMS.

Aim: This review identified key success factors (KSFs) for medical laboratories in LMICs implementing QMS in accordance with the International Organization for Standardization standard 15189 as a pathway to improving laboratory quality.
