Similar to other brain regions, the neurons in the lateral septum (LS) are of heterogeneous populations. However, their resting membrane potential (RMP) on average is not too far apart. Cells were characterized based on biological markers by using brain slices, as under these in vitro conditions, neurons retain their morphologies.

Evaluation of Comprehensive COVID-19 Testing Program Outcomes in a US Dental Clinical Care Academic Setting.

Importance: Although many academic institutions have implemented infection control and prevention protocols, including regular asymptomatic self-testing, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the outcomes of mandatory surveillance testing programs at academic dental institutions that offer direct patient-facing clinical care has not yet been reported.

Objective: To report the findings of a comprehensive surveillance COVID-19 testing program at an academic dental institution by assessing SARS-CoV-2 positivity rates and the potential association of test positivity with individual-level characteristics such as age, sex, and role.

Design, Setting, And Participants: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using SARS-CoV-2 self-testing data from a mandatory surveillance program at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

A novel protocol to maintain continuous access to thawed plasma at a rural trauma center.

Background: Early administration of plasma improves mortality in massively transfused patients, but the thawing process causes delay. Small rural centers have been reluctant to maintain thawed plasma due to waste concerns. Our 254-bed rural Level II trauma center initiated a protocol allowing continuous access to thawed plasma, and we hypothesized its implementation would not increase waste or cost.

An awareness campaign decreases distracted driving among hospital employees at a rural trauma center.

Objective: To evaluate whether an educational campaign on distracted driving will have an impact in a given community.

Methods: Investigators were stationed in an employee parking lot of a 256-bed hospital to determine baseline distracted driving followed by a 4-week hospital-wide distracted-driving awareness campaign. The campaign included signs/posters in the hospital, a booth outside of the cafeteria with flyers, a large banner in the employee lot and an opportunity for people to sign a pledge form to drive distraction free.

Nicotine-Mediated ADP to Spike Transition: Double Spiking in Septal Neurons.

The majority of neurons in lateral septum (LS) are electrically silent at resting membrane potential. Nicotine transiently excites a subset of neurons and occasionally leads to long lasting bursting activity upon longer applications. We have observed simultaneous changes in frequencies and amplitudes of spontaneous action potentials (AP) in the presence of nicotine.
