Repetitive remodeling and renewal of the cytoplasmic structures realizing synthesis of proteins accompanies the cycling of ground squirrels between torpor and arousal states during hibernation season. Earlier we have shown partial loss of ribosomes and nucleolus inactivation in CA3 hippocampal pyramidal neurons in each bout of torpor with rapid and full recovery after warming up. Here we describe reversible structural changes in endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and Golgi complex (G) in these neurons.

Epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR) were identified in the membrane fraction of tumor in 21 out of 58 (36%) endometrial cancer patients. EGFR ligands--EGF-like peptides--were found in tumor cytosols in 36% of patients. However, EGFR and EGF-like peptides were observed in 7% of tumors only; there were no receptors or ligands in 39% of patients.

In hippocampal neurons of ground squirrels and neuroblastoma culture the ribosome state was analyzed by staining with acridine orange (AO), labeling with radioactive amino acids, and electron microscopy. Electron microscopy indicated that the extent to which ribosomes associated in polysomes varied from 25% in brain cells of torpid ground squirrels up to 93% in growing neuroblastoma cells. In control rat neurons, it was 75%.

To assess the diagnostic value of radioimmunoassay determination of serum levels of glycocholic acid in alcohol-induced chronic diffuse hepatic lesions, this technique was compared by sensitivity and informative content with conventional hepatic tests. Hepatocytic function was measured in combined examination of 83 patients and 30 controls. It is shown that serum glycocholic acid concentration permits detection of early alcohol defects of the liver, excretory dysfunction in particular, control of cholestatic changes, of transformation of hepatic steatosis into hepatitis or cirrhosis, evaluation of cholestasis.

Mossy fibre synapses on the CA3 hippocampal neurons in the brain of ground squirrels repeatedly undergo a striking structural transformation during hibernation. In the middle of hibernation bout the giant complex mossy fibre synapses have a reduced number of dendritic spine infoldings that are smaller and have a decreased number of postsynaptic densities in comparison with mossy fibre synapses of active animals. Two hours after arousal all these parameters of mossy fibre synapses increase and significantly exceed their levels not only in torpid but in active euthermic animals between bouts of torpor.
